it worked well enough for me to record the sound from video files to later burn to CD.
I need my stereo mix record level unmuted in order to do that.
So I'll take that as a "no"? In that case possibly a poorly written driver, as stupid as that sounds. If it worked in the past but not anymore, it might be incompatible with Windows 10 or recent Windows 10 updates... That is assuming you allowed it to "upgrade" to 10. (many did simply because they had no idea it was happening or how to stop it)

Sampling Bias: a systematic error in sampling procedures that leads to a distortion in the results of the study.
Hasty Generalization Fallacy: the size of the sample is too small to support the conclusion.
Regression Fallacy - ascribes cause where none exists
Straw man fallacy – an argument based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position.
Appeal to authority (argumentum ad verecundiam) – where an assertion is deemed true because of the position or authority of the person asserting it.
Argumentum ad populum (appeal to widespread belief, bandwagon argument, appeal to the majority, appeal to the people) – where a proposition is claimed to be true or good solely because many people believe it to be so.
Appeal to ridicule – an argument is made by presenting the opponent's argument in a way that makes it appear ridiculous.
Motte-and-bailey fallacy: The arguer conflates two similar positions, one modest and easy to defend (the "motte") and one much more controversial (the "bailey"). The arguer advances the controversial position, but when challenged, they insist that they are only advancing the more modest position.
