A few disappointing releases from Sony Choice Collection back on 7/2 in that they're ALL double-dips...

Ladies of Leisure (1930) Ralph Graves, Barbara Stanwyck, Marie Prevost
(also included on TCM's Frank Capra The Early Collection)

More Than a Secretary (1936) Jean Arthur, George Brent
(this one was also part of TCM's Jean Arthur Comedy Collection)

Miss Sadie Thompson (1953) Rita Hayworth, Jose Ferrer, Aldo Ray

Salome (1953) Rita Hayworth, Stewart Granger, Charles Laughton

(both part of The Films of Rita Hayworth set)

Little effort went into adding these to their MOD program.

Exciting news for Charley Chase fans, announced Nov. 28, 2012:

SONY/Columbia has announced the long-awaited DVD release of their Charley Chase shorts, Volume One.
Release date is expected to be January 1, 2013.

Shorts included:
Man Bites Lovebug (1937)
The Mind Needer (1938)
The Chump Takes a Bump (1939)
Rattling Romeo (1939)
Skinny the Moocher (1939)
The Awful Goof (1939)
The Heckler (1940)
South of the Boudoir (1940)
A Nag in the Bag (1938) (Starring Smith & Dale, directed by Charley Chase).

With only 8 of the total of 20 Chase shorts included in this volume, I expect they may spread the remaining 12 out over two more volumes and include more shorts Chase directed starring others.

NoraCharles, someone commented on Digitalbits that the copy they just bought of THE BLACK BOOK looks very good. I know the PD prints that have been released are so dark you can barely make some of the scenes out.

Thanks, Egdecliff. :)

It's a neat, little French Revolution-noir - often strikingly composed. I could see myself taking a chance if there were to be a sale.

I would assume SONY used original masters for this DVD-R release. Have not heard any comments as yet to the quality. The DVD certainly can't be like the awful PD's that are available. It is a bit pricey as well. Hopefully there will be a sale on the Columbia titles soon.

Just wondering if anyone's picked up The Black Book. It's the first of these titles that's held any interest for me, but I'm hesitant to purchase an overpriced DVD-R when the prints of this film have been so notoriously bad. Thanks!
