Dear Theresa,

I was away from the boards while all these wonderful things were happening and those wonderful pictures were being taken. Just lovely!

The best possible wishes to You and the lucky fella there.

Well it might be toward the end of the month. I have had some really big changes happen as of yesterday, so I am wondering how this will effect all the things I need to get done before October. Hopefully I can get around to the exhibit sooner than later.

Of course, of course ... don't mind me with all this hurry-up stuff, just Johnny trying to be funny. It's a long-running exhibit anyway, perhaps better later rather than sooner with the reports. I hope 'changes' doesn't mean trouble of any kind ... if so, I hope you have speedy resolutions to any and all problems. ...

laffite: That's all Johnny has any more, his little drolleries. And sometimes they're not even droll.

Did I say the wrong word? That's the only word I know for "funny"...See, now I have to look it up. Heehee! No sad faces, Johnny! In this thread people can only be happy and smiling! And if they aren't, well then that is my mission to wipe sad faces away. Your little drolleries always make me giggle, so please keep them up! Because then I can get out my drolleries and we can droll back and forth. It's a vicious cycle that just keeps on going. I hope it never ends!

Main non, petite T, You used the right word, it means, "funny, comical, or amusing." Tu es parfait!

No more sad faces, je te le promis!. That was suppose to be mock sad face but the mock part sometimes gets left behind. And BTW. you are excellent at chasing away sad faces, there is no one better. And yes, on with les droleries, pour toujours!

Well of course you know the answer to that question, dear one, we want your reports most heartily ... and if we don't get them, then yowza, we may have to do some complainin; around here. And you know too, MissG would probably be particularly delighted to read those reports as GWTW is, I believe, one of her very faves. So fire away when ready ...

Now which Festival is this? The next TCM one? Already?... as in the one just recently done? Or some other? When is the next TCM Festival? And Where? I probably won't make it, just curious.

lafitte and butterscotchgreer, here's a link to all the events scheduled for the "Making of Gone With The Wind" exhibition at the Harry Ransom Center in Austin this fall :http://www.hrc.utexas.edu/events/

I'm planning on attending a few of the events and writing about them a little later.
Hope to see you at some of them if you are in Austin!

So, I was wondering if anyone here in Austin or anyone out of Austin would come to the "Making of Gone with the Wind" exhibit at the Harry Ransom Center going on all through the fall until January. I will be going to see the dresses and take a look at what else is going on there. I can report back if anyone is interested in hearing about it.

T, I have a question that I forgot to ask before. How was it that Mr O happened to be in Austin? I doubt he is on a tour but that would be great if he were. If he came to my town I would certainly be there at the theater. Thanks.

'Ello my mean pirate!

I really dont know the answer to that question. I wish I did. It seemed like Robert had some kind of attachment to Austin, but that may be my mind playing tricks on me. I dont know. He came last summer to Austin as well. I was going to go to that also, but I think I was out of town when it was going on, so I missed it.

What a wonderful story, Theresa! And I am thrilled to hear about another Essentials hostess who just happens to be an Oscar winner. I know that Drew Barrymore wants to spend more quality time with her growing family and has other projects on the horizon.

Julie Andrews would be nice! There are just so many possibilities. I also read some speculation about Cher, Eva Marie Saint, and a few others. We'll just have to wait to find out! Teehee! :-)

Hey Christy!

Any comments about what might occur in the future with "The Essentials?"

Well, someone from the audience did ask Robert about his relationship with Drew Barrymore as the Essentials Co-host. So he went on and on about her. I thought it was adorable. Then he rounded out that question's answer with telling all of us that they were in cahoots for another co-host. He did say that it is a female Oscar winner. I'm hoping it is Julie Andrews, but maybe that's just too much to hope for. Heehee! He left that hanging with, "But you will LOVE her. Trust me."

He told us a really cute story about something Drew Barrymore told him. Apparently Robert is the reason for Drew getting together with her now husband. She said that this guy had asked her out on a date, but she had initially turned him down because she was focusing on her career, but there turned out to be an event she needed a date for, so she asked him to go with her and then he turned her down. He  said that he wanted to stay home, because there was something on TCM he just had to watch. Drew just stared at him with a huge smile and apparently the rest is history. Funny how things work out!

Oh my goodness, that one word from Astor makes you have goose bumps! She is just that marvelous! I have seen this movie I don't know how many times, and my jaw still drops every time I hear her say it. Part of it was probably the response from the audience when she said it. I was caught in the moment, probably, but STILL! Heehee!

And isn't it curious how she is having a sort of an affair with a married man, but you still root for her to win in the end? How does she do that? It's all part of her gorgeous charm!

If it’s possible to actually fall in love with a character in a movie, then the object of affections goes to Edith Cortright. Gentle, quiet, attractive, intelligent, what more do you want (and she has a villa in Italy) ;-) Of course, she comes off so much the better compared to Fran but she has much in her own right. She is not a home wrecker type, the love affair evolves seamlessly from friendship. Yes, she says she’s lonely but she doesn’t just fling herself at him, per se. When she finally says to him something like, “Gosh, Sam, I think I must love you,” it’s a very satisfying. His unorthodox response, “Well, I’m happy for it,” might not sound very romantic but the whole thing works so well. There is an age gap between the two actors and 1937 might not have wanted an excessively sappy love scene, but the movie doesn’t need it. The whole scene with the telephone call is brilliant. And the return at the end, well, heck, even a crusty ole pirate might mist a little at that, especially with someone like Edith. We pirates are human too, ya know ;-) .

I don't think Fran is strong in any way. She gives up too easily on so many things and she puts her cares in the wrong places. She turns her back on her loved ones, especially her daughter and grandchild. I mean no woman wants to grow old with wrinkles, but how could you NOT see your own grandchild and comfort your daughter? That's another thing that really bothered poor Joe. After the film was finished, he almost looked boiling mad, because of that one thing in the film. I thought that was humorous.

Uh-oh, we have a problem here ;-) No, not really. I see your point. She doesn’t have strength of character in the moral sense but I think she does have strength of purpose, wayward as some of these purposes may be. Once she makes her decision she plows full speed ahead, damn the torpedoes, she does so and she doesn’t mind if she wrecks a few lives along the way, including her own. I couldn’t believe it when she blithely informs Sam that she’s spending the summer with Iselin at his villa. Wha-hooey? What’s that all about? I think I recall Sam, who is in the other room, ducking in head through the doorway, say what? I can’t remember the whole movie but the big event at the end of leaving Sam for (name) is preposterous. And this business about her children that you bring up, absolutely! I see wrongheadedness and dubious morality, but there is a sort of s strength there, abject though it may be, in her inexorable push for getting what she thinks she wants. And Ruth Chatterton seems the ideal actress to embody that. When Sam meets her to escort her back to USA, she is so peremptory, so presumptuous, so demanding, so uppity, she doesn’t have clue. I love her quote, “I don’t seem to be able to hit the congenial note.” I love that, one of the few quotes from the movies that I use in real life. If I detect someone is on my case I say that and it seems to clear the air a bit. Thank you, Fran

.

Oh, I said I would only like to see that for grins and giggles, dahling. I don't think I would actually like a remake of Dodsworth. I'm kind of glad that it didn't happen in a way. But I will always be curious, naturally. I mean how can you turn down the looks of Gregory Peck?! That's....that's just mean, you pirate! Heehee!

I find it quite easy to turn down the looks of Gregory Peck, thank you!  And besides, you can see Gregory in Roman Holiday (great!) And yes, we pirates are mean, we have our reputation to hold , you know.

If you would like to respond to any of this, butterscotchgreer, we might meet @FrankGrimes terrritory in order to preserve the integrity of the Festival thread news, whatever please you.

And I want to repeat that your posts here are great. I always check here to see if there is anything new from you.

:)
