THE SHOOTING -

"Schultz, a fourth-year computer engineering student at the school, was shot Saturday night after police responded to a 911 call at 11:17 p.m., with the caller reporting a suspicious person on campus. The caller said the person -- described as a white male with long blond hair, white T-shirt and blue jeans, possibly intoxicated -- was holding a knife and possibly a gun.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Schultz made that 911 call.

Cell phone video shows the officer repeatedly yelling at Schultz to put the knife down and not move.
In the video, after Schultz takes a few steps forward, an officer opens fire.

Three suicide notes were found in Schultz's dorm room, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.
No gun was found at the scene and the only knife found was one inside a multipurpose tool, the GBI said.........

Looks like a classic case of 'suicide by cop', which is really sad.  Georgia Tech doesn't accept dummies as students, and this kid had a 3.9 GPA.  Even so, people like this can also have demons raging inside them that others can't comprehend.  I feel bad for all parties involved in this tragic episode.  Like so many police shootings, things got out of hand and sidetracked in a manner which resulted in another senseless death.

What's really upsetting is the victims are either mentally incapacitated or drunk or high when these incidents occur.  Generally speaking, I empathize with the police, but at the same time, I cannot believe there aren't other ways to subdue a 'problem' citizen without resulting in that citizen's death.  I also can't believe stuff like this keeps happening across the country.  Is nothing being done at all, or is it media under-reporting on cities that are having success combatting police shootings of people, many of whom are unarmed?

Another incident happened...this time in Oklahoma City.  The victim was deaf.  But, he was also said to be holding a metal pipe at the time of the shooting.

It's only a concern for most people if it happens to them, their family or friends or somebody who is in the same race and/or class as them.

What you say is the true with most people and that is sad.   Everyone should be concerned when there is data that supports police abuse that targets select groups (or if the court system find police not guilty in a uneven manner depending on who was abused).

As far as I know no such data exist.     That doesn't mean there is no such abuse but collection of such data has been lacking.

The title of this thread should be changed to why the entire justice system is hated.

PS: and of course 'these things still happen'. That isn't the issue or a concern. It is only a concern if they happen too often.

People in St. Louis continue to protest not-guilty verdict in Jason Stockley murder trial-

"Protesters in St. Louis are again voicing outrage over a judge’s decision to find former St. Louis police officer Jason Stockley not guilty in the 2011 death of Anthony Lamar Smith.

More than 200 people gathered at West County Center mall in Des Peres, dozens in Heman Park in University City and a small group in downtown St. Louis to express their dismay of a criminal justice system they say is unjust....

"People are losing hope," he said. "They’re going, ‘We’ve marched in the streets. We’ve had a civil rights movement. We’ve elected a black president. We’ve had a women’s suffrage movement. We’ve had all these rights movements, and then these things still happen.'”

More protests are expected in coming days.......

A S. C. Highway Patrol trooper was driving 80 MPH in a 40 MPH zone when he ran a stop sign and crashed into a mini-van in July.  The 81 year old passenger died a month later.  Trooper resigned, but has now been charged with reckless homicide.

He was on duty, but the S.C. Highway Patrol has not shared whether or not he was on a call or if he had his blue lights and/or siren on.

Dozens arrested, several cops injured after controversial Stockley trial verdict -

....."This court, in conscience, cannot say that the State has proven every element of murder beyond a reasonable doubt or that the State has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant did not act in self-defense," St. Louis Circuit Judge Timothy Wilson wrote in the decision .

In a written statement, St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner acknowledged the difficulty of winning police shooting cases but said prosecutors believe they "offered sufficient evidence that proved beyond a reasonable doubt" that Stockley intended to kill Smith.

Assistant Circuit Attorney Robert Steele emphasized during the trial that police dashcam video of the chase captured Stockley saying he was "going to kill this (expletive), don't you know it.".....

. Prosecutors said the officer planted a gun in Smith's car after the shooting.

In an interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch , Stockley said he understands how the video of him fatally shooting Smith looks bad to investigators and the public,

but he said the optics have to be separated from the facts and he did nothing wrong.....

The gun found in Smith's car did not have his DNA on it, but it did have Stockley's........

no gentleman would treat a lady like that

Not without going to jail, that's for sure.

if nurse alex wubbels is a mother with kids then I have to be against it.

this is one of my old school hang-ups. you just shouldn't push around moms.

So, are you saying what happened to her was reprehensible because she's a mother?  It seems as if you're intimating that if she were a single woman or married with no kids, then the police action against her would be justified.  At least, I don't think that's what you're getting at.  Whether married or not or childless or not, no gentleman would treat a lady like that, especially one that was doing her job and following the procedures set forth by her employer.

There were no exigent circumstances to justify the cop's conduct.

There was no reason to presume the burned victim had anything in his system when he was hit, therefore no exigent circumstances.

doan like disagreeing with jake but if nurse alex wubbels is a mother with kids then I have to be against it.

this is one of my old school hang-ups. you just shouldn't push around moms.
