I haven't seen much from 2005. There aren't many films or performances that stand out. (And I have yet to see The New World, Walk the Line, Brokeback Mountain, and Cinderella Man) As opposed to my 90s list, or early 2000s, this list will be short.

Lynn Cohen/Munich
Celia Weston/Junebug
Tilda Swinton/The Chronicles of Narnia:The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
Eva Marie Saint/Because of Winn-Dixie (just a minor kid's film, but Eva still looked great and had a lovely presence in her small supporting role)

-------It turns out I haven't seen any of the Best Actress nominees.  Has that ever happened before?  Yes, in 1931-1932, where there were only three nominees, and in 1952.  I blame the Academy in all three cases for choosing uninspiring movies.

Leading vs. Supporting Categories in 2005 …

IMO George Clooney was a lead actor in Syriana.  I suspect he was put in the supporting category by the producers to increase his chances of winning.  It worked in the case of Oscar.

I have both Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as the leads in Brokeback Mountain.  Oscar had Gyllenhaal in support which I think was an effort to not split the vote.

I have Mickey Rourke as a lead in Sin City.

Both Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette are leads in In Her Shoes.

Both Ion Fiscuteanu and Luminita Gheorghiu are the leads in The Death of Mr. Lazarescu.

Barry Pepper is supporting in The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada.

Both Joel Edgerton and Chiwetel Ejiofor are leads in Kinky Boots.

I have Maria Bello as the lead actress in  A History of Violence.  Many awards had her in the supporting category.

I'm going to go with Gyllenhaal as Supporting, even though he deserves to be in the Best Actor category. I won't go over five nominees in any category, and with Ledger I've already got five for Best Actor 2005.
