YES!! I was just at the film festival last week and was wondering if there was a chapter in NJ. I am very close to Toms River and was just thinking the other day I would love to figure out how to start a chapter or be a part of a chapter. I know a few people in New Jersey who would love to be members but they don't live near to me.

Bette Davis' daughter talks about witchcraft

Interesting post. I don't think B.D. is using religion as a substitute mother. She talks in her lectures about how women are supposed to leave their mothers and "cleave unto" their husbands. Also, the ironic thing about all this is that after the first book was published her father, William Sherry, reached out to her. She had never had much of a relationship with him (he divorced Bette when B.D. was about three years old). So starting in 1985, she did build a relationship with her father. She and her husband and their kids became very close to him. Sherry died in 1995, and according to B.D., before her father died, she rescued him from a cult where he had been an elder (I assume she's referring to Mormonism). Therefore, she ended up being close to her father, her half-siblings (Sherry had two children with his second wife) and her stepmother. So it could be argued that she substituted her husband, her sons, her father, and her father's family in place of her relationship with Bette. But I doubt she sees it that way. I think she sees her mother as the problematic person that tried to fracture the family. But B.D. feels she went in the opposite direction of her mother and built a strong family. Again I'm not saying I agree with everything B.D. has written and said, but I think a lot of what has happened with her makes sense. She wanted out from under her mother's control and what she considered her mother's destructive and dysfunctional behavior. I think she was open to reconciling with her mother if Bette had come around a bit and tried to meet her on these newer terms. However, that would have meant Bette had to sacrifice supreme ego and supreme sense of control, and Bette was unable to do this. As a result we have a daughter who really has had to make her own path, somewhat in opposition to Bette's defiance and stubbornness. This carries B.D. forward even now. B.D.'s sons are active on social media, and they seem to be very healthy and well-adjusted. Maybe B.D.'s religion is a bit "intense" (for lack of a better word) but I don't think she's done anything terribly wrong.
  11. Absolutely. Would we even be discussing her if she wasn't Bette Davis' daughter? I just picked up Luft's book at a library sale...curious after seeing the Canadian production based on her memoirs. I found Luft's story interesting because of the unique situations she found herself because of her famous parents. She seems to simply "state the facts, ma'm" and not demonize anyone's shortcomings or hold bitterness. I completely agree with your observations. Whenever I hear someone whine about how bad their childhood was I respond by saying, "Aren't you glad you're an ADULT and have control of your own life now?" Most people realize - once they grow up - their parents did the best they could. (esp if they have children themselves) Taking responsibility of your own life-it's called maturity. Nasty, bitter stories blaming others just smacks of immaturity to me. Not a surprise BD has given her life over to religion-just a "mother" substitute. I always thought BD was adopted, but must have been thinking about Christina Crawford. BDe is the spitting image of Bette. Haha, comparing the BD/Christina keeps the "Feud" going to a second generation.

Bette Davis' daughter talks about witchcraft

It didn't do as well as the first book. It was a sequel, where she talks about how she and her family dealt with the negative publicity of the first book. She hadn't reconciled with her mother, and of course would not. They remained estranged and Bette died in 1989. To my knowledge she hasn't written about her mother's death, though that may be referenced in the lectures she has posted.

    Overrated talents ?

I think this one's gonna get a lot of personal "dislikes" posted as "overrateds" . There are a lot of actors and actresses that many people really adore that many others just can't stand for one reason or another, and vice-versa. I very early on in my tenure here, expressed MY feeling that ADOLPHE MENJOU only had a talent for being an annoying presence, and the "blowback" from many here, who are/were HUGE fans was Tsunami like. So........ Sepiatone
