    I Just Watched...

LA 2017 (1971) - 5/10 Episode of the series The Name of the Game directed by Steven Spielberg, later re-shown as a standalone TV movie. Series star Gene Barry is on his way to a conference when he has a car accident that renders him unconscious. He's awakened in the year 2017 in a dystopian future-Los Angeles that has relocated underground following an ecological disaster that has left much of the planet uninhabitable. Barry tries to learn what exactly led to this nightmare scenario, and is disturbed by the fascist government led by Barry Sullivan. Also featuring Sharon Farrell, Paul Stewart, Severn Darden, Edmond O'Brien, Louise Latham, Michael C. Gwynne, and Geoffrey Lewis. This "glimpse into the future" gets much of it wrong, as usual, but it's still amusing to see the worries of the day, most of which are still present. Some noteworthy touches: the cops are also degree-holding psychiatrists that spout psycho-babble; milk is a luxury and status symbol; a visit to a nightclub features an elderly acid rock band performing for a bunch of geriatric hippies; and a discussion about a "supposed sighting of a real Negro in Cleveland", which hasn't been seen since "the riots of '86". Classic Westerns: Great Horse Riding Footage?

One of the best horsemen was Ben Johnson, who had been a rodeo cowboy. In this clip from "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon", you will see that he does all of his own riding in this chase scene.

    Great One-Liners

The silent version of King of Kings is coming on tonight and it reminded me of this one liner given by a film critic of the time - "saw the picture, loved the book."

    TCM and aspect ratio

My new Directv Genie selected the best picture format. When I close Native on the TV's picture size setting, the "King of Kings" in 1.85, Full only very slightly changed the height, rest fills the screen. had to install an HDMI switch.

Yes I think so. Definitely "A" budget set design. And this was only one room of that house! The bedroom where Charles Laughton was supposedly dying was equally huge.
  24. I will definitely remember I wrote that. I wrote that for a reason and made sure I posted it. It amuses me that people go along with these chicken little sky is falling theories about TCM. This has been happening for years. Will TCM continue to change and grow? Yes. It won't stay the same. But it won't go away. To perpetuate the notion that it will go away is some desperate ploy to create "news" where there is none.

They were going for that Citizen Kane effect
  26. Just remember you wrote that. As I've said before, I'm glad that "Game of Thrones" and "Veep" are ending on HBO so that AT&T can never mess with them.
