Edgecliff is correct in noting that Jean Simmons has the closest resemblance to Vivien Leigh. In 1974 a "Films in Review" contributor to an article on Vivien Leigh noted that Jean Simmons was the closest to Vivien Leigh in appearance and personal quality. One of the Jean Simmons websites has the caption: "Vivien Leigh's younger, sweeter sister." Friday evening, April 17th, TCM is showing the Jean Simmons-Dirk Bogarde mystery set in Paris "So Long at the Fair." The film opens on a ship with a close-up of Jean that establishes immediately her resemblance to Vivien Leigh. For me, it is in the Fox film, "Desiree" in which Jean's resemblance to Vivien is most striking of all. The costume designer, Rene Hubert, also did the costumes for Vivien in "That Hamilton Woman."

I read somewhere that one of the big shots who worked on the film wanted his daughter for the part,(can't remember his name.) That's how Cammie King was cast in the role. She was a very pretty little girl and did a credible job, but she got the role because of politics. Isn't that always the way? However, I think Elizabeth should have gotten the part. She was gorgeous too and it would have been a 'carved in stone' memory for the film industry, especially since she grew up to be the world's most beautiful woman.

Both were great actresses. But I think Vivien held her own as Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire, where she played a histerical southern belle, a part that riveled Taylor's in Virginia Wolfe. If you haven't seen this one yet you should just as a comparison. And she won an oscar for it too.

I think there is more a resemblance of Jean Simmons to Vivien Leigh than either Lamarr or Taylor.

And I believe Elizabeth Taylor was supposed to play Bonnie Blue, scarlett's daughter in GWTW. Apparently, everyone felt she resembled Vivian Leigh even as a child. Don't know why she wasn't used.

My younger brother confuses Vivien with Hedy Lamarr. He thinks they look very similar.

It's interesting that Viv and Liz have both won two Oscars. The camera loved both of them.

I would say both are in their own right, Vivien is subtle and not as voluptuous as Elizabeth and use her sex appeal more. Vivien is classy, subtle and witty without being sarcastic or loud. My personal preference is Vivien hands down.

More beautiful in prime? Elizabeth. Better actress? Vivien. Icon? Both. One thing you have to acknowledge is that Elizabeth squandered her talent, I would assume quite willingly, for at least the latter part of her career. It seems to me that Vivien simply withheld herself, rather than engage in questionable projects. "Ship of Fools" isn't great, but she had a strong impact and kept her dignity. Both are closely associated with Tennessee Williams and both acquitted themselves well with that material, but I think Vivien showed us more of the interior life of those characters, both in "Streetcar" and "The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone". It isn't really necessary to pit these two acting icons against each other, but since it's been done, I vote for Vivien overall.

Elizabeth Taylor better actress and an icon because of her philanthropic work with AIDS. Vivien Leigh...icon because of her "Scarlett". Forever...her name will linked with that role. I just cannot see her holding her own in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" The spectrum of emotions that are constantly changing with sharp turns in that movie...I can only see Liz.

Boy that's a lot of questions.LOL. My personal preference is Elizabeth Taylor. They are both so beautiful to look at but I think Taylor was a bit more skilled as an actress... not that Leigh couldn't hold her own.As far as icon status I would have to go with Taylor again, mostly because of what someone else sighted in that she is still alive so a lot more people know of her. I would venture if you asked people under the age of 25 if they knew who both of them are, more would know Taylor.

My personal preference is Vivien Leigh - and I also think she was the better actress. As noted, all a matter of opinion. There's another thread here dedicated to the gorgeous Hedy Lamarr and a while ago the similarities between her looks and Leigh's were a hot subject, with photos posted proving the point.

hi barbetta, and welcome to the forums! :D

i think vivien leigh was a better actor than liz taylor, but for everything else it's so much a matter of personal preference, i wouldn't know wehre to begin. Taylor's probably remembered more by the general public because she's still alive and she's been tabloid fodder for decades.

all that aside, i really loved young liz when she was in that movie with the fast horse. :x

There seems to be a facial similarity between Vivien Leigh and Elizabeth Taylor. Who was more beautiful in their prime? Who was the better actress? Who has become an icon? Vivien Leigh or Elizabeth Taylor?
