IMHO The Essentials needs a womans touch.

The last three women, Molly Haskell, Carrie Fisher and Rose McGowan, didn't have half the chemistry with Robert O that Alec does.

I know this is coming late to this discussion, but I think Baldwin adds a lot to the Essentials. Frankly, I was surprised. One of the things he does is to talk about the technical aspects of the process, and that is insight I want to hear from someone who knows what he is talking about. Alec Baldwin knows what he is talking about.

I am not privy to what happens behind the camera nor do I have any real info on Alec Baldwin's classic film knowledge other than watching The Essentials, but consider this:

Would someone just reading cue cards be able to have a conversation with Robert Osborne week after week? Would Robert Osborne put up with 2 years of this? Wouldn't Mr. Osborne be bored of someone who just read his lines from cue cards over and over again by now?

Next check out this quote from TCM's website: “Of all the contemporary stars who have appeared on TCM over the years, Alec Baldwin is one of the most knowledgeable and passionate about classic film...” Tom Brown, vice president of original programming for TCM

Now I will preface all of this by saying I like Baldwin's work on TCM but do not give a hoot about his personal dealings, happenings, etc.. why does this stuff matter regarding one's performance?

If he is good on The Essentials (this Forum title by the way) super..if he stinks..well in a year there will be another person.

There is no doubt RO has head knowledge galore when it comes to Hollywood - past and present. However, are we to believe that Baldwin comes to Essentials w/o rehearsals or cue cards! Some seem to think he has all this info stored away and just brings it out when needed. The man IS an actor so is he acting smart or is he the an endless fount of Hollywood trivia?

Alec Baldwin IS back. Along with his rich film info, insight and rapport with Robert Osborne.

When one says they decide to turn away from TCM when Baldwin is on because they do not care for his acting that puzzles me. Do they think he is acting during the few minutes before and after each of The Essentials films?

Can one compare The Essentials intros and outros to Baldwin's appearances in"Glengarry Glen Ross" or "30 Rock"? I don't think so.

Just because one does not care for another's acting or his views outside acting (the donkey in the living room) why can't one enjoy or at least appreciate separate work by the person?

I've taken issue with Alec's statements that are non-film related in the past. However,I think he's done a fine job as co-host. I agree with Kyle- Alec is film knowledgeable and I think RO and Alec work well together. I have many of the same NY childhood memories of Million dollar Movie, Early and Late shows, Chiller Theatre- so I can relate to him on that level and that brings back wonderful memories for me. Besides, he's easy on the eye.

Well, it looks like we will have to bloviate about Alec on this particular thread from now on. - finance

It was certainly an odd choice, given that this was started by an extremely negative poster well after a couple of other positive threads.

I am acquainted with many "bloviators," and have been accused of being one myself, but I just wanted to let you know, hlywdkjk, that I think you made many valid points in your post.

A bloviator (I think we have H.L. Mencken to thank for the term) is a pompous, long-winded speaker who too much enjoys the sound of his/her own voice.

Would someone explain to me just what a "bloviator" is? I've only heard the word with reference to Alec.

Alec says he has his opinions and he is "d**** well" going to express them. However, I will not be hearing his opinions as I will wait out another year on Essentials. He keeps popping up between other movies though. Oh, for the days of Alec-free TCM.
