We need MORE animation on TCM.....but I think Saturdays make more sense since Sundays are already so crowded with MUST SEE television and Saturdays are better for the kids!!!!

I want more classic animation on TCM
I'm getting annoyed that animation is a novelty on the channel
I mean it's nice they showed The Phantom Tollbooth in it's original ratio and all
but We need more animated films on TCM like say show Cats Don't Dance and The Adventures of The American Rabbit in their original ratio (Widescreen)

They couldn't have picked a better co-host than Jerry Beck. There's no one more knowledgeable about, and dedicated to, preserving and showing old animation. I'm looking forward to this very much. I wish TCM would follow up by showing early Fleischer Bros. work, including Koko the Clown silents. They were often amazing.

"It should be pointed out that he is not hosting classic cartoons, but co-hosting an evening of animated films." - filmlover

Actually, my friend, the evening does include two one-hour blocks of collected "cartoons" (or animated short films, if you prefer) that night. And I believe Mr. Beck is co-hosting the entire evening, from Gulliver's Travels through the import The Adventures Of Prince Achmed later that night.

The first of the two hour blocks is devoted to presenting selected cartoons from the recent UPA "Jolly Frolics" collection while the second hour is devoted to (mostly) silent-era animated cartoons.

The recently released October schedule includes the specific titles for each set of cartoons.

11pm/8pm -
The UPA "Jolly Frolics" Collection Titles
  • "Fudget's Budget" (1954)
  • "The Unicorn In The Garden" (1953)
  • "Gerald McBoing Boing" (1951)
  • "Rooty Toot Toot" (1951)
  • "The Tell-Tale Heart" (1953)
  • "Christopher Crumpet" (1953)
  • "The Ragtime Bear" (1949)

12am/9pm -
Selected Silent/Early Animation Shorts
  • "Lightning Sketches" (1907)
  • "Haunted Hotel" (1907)
  • "Artist's Dream" (1913)
  • "Inkwell - Trip to Mars" (1924)
  • "Bobby Bumps Starts for School" (1917)
  • "Fireman Save My Child" (1919) Mutt And Jeff
  • "Bomb Idea, The" (1920)
  • "Scents and Nonsense" (1926) Krazy Kat?
  • "Springtime" (1923)
  • "Farmerette, The" (1932)
  • "Down on Phoney Farm" (1915)

It should be pointed out that he is not hosting classic cartoons, but co-hosting an evening of animated films.

I am very happy to see Jerry Beck doing this. He is definitely one of the acknowledged greatest historians of cartoons, a title well deserved. His books on Warner Bros. cartoons are terrific.

Never heard of Jerry Beck...no idea who he is.

This looks nice but this sort of thing should be done more FREQUENTLY on TCM as far as animation. It's really shameful there aren't more animated offerings sprinkled throughout the schedule.

Wonderful news. I will be especially anxious to see if MR. BUG GOES TO TOWN has the original main title.

Tom Stathes, who is supplying several rare silent cartoons, is a young collector who, in just a few years, has amassed an admirable collection of 16mm rarities. Great to see his prints getting such a first-class presentation.

Bravo Jerry Beck and TCM.

When you see Fleischer's GULLIVER'S TRAVELS, pay attention to Victor Young's "Atmospheric Music". It's a wonderful score.
