  3. There’s a Reason Many Voters Have Negative Views of Warren—But the Press Won’t Tell You Why The media have focused on her comparatively low approval ratings—but not the misogyny that drives them. ".....Mentioning the right’s attacks on Warren plus her low approval ratings while citing her “very liberal record” and the controversy surrounding her alleged Native American heritage implies a causal relationship between these facts. Warren is a lefty who has made controversial ancestral claims. Ergo, Republicans attack her, and many Americans don’t like her very much. But that equation is misleading. The better explanation for why Warren attracts disproportionate conservative criticism, and has disproportionately high disapproval ratings, has nothing to do with her progressive economic views or her dalliance with DNA testing. It’s that she’s a woman... Warren’s relatively low numbers appear driven by her unpopularity among men. When the University of Massachusetts asked state residents whom they support in the 2020 Democratic primary, Warren tied with Biden among women. Among men, she trailed him by 16 points. ............ What all this ignores is the harsh truth that when women politicians—especially women politicians who embrace a feminist agenda—overtly seek power, many American men, and some American women, react with “moral outrage.” They may not express that outrage in explicitly gendered terms, just as they may not express their anxiety about a black candidate in explicitly racial terms. They may instead cite DNA testing or hidden emails or San Francisco’s cultural liberalism. Or they may simply say they find the candidate’s mannerisms off-putting. The media’s role is to dig deeper: to interpret these specific discomforts in light of the deeper discomfort that Americans again and again express with ambitious women..... Journalists shouldn’t ignore electability. Elizabeth Warren’s comparatively low approval ratings are a legitimate news story. But the bigger story is that Americans still judge women politicians far more harshly than they judge their male competitors. Unless journalists name that unfairness, they risk perpetuating it. Elizabeth Warren Pres. Candidacy.....

Elizabeth Warren Has a Theory About Corporate Power The left forgot what Roosevelt knew: Small businesses and corporate behemoths have different interests. ".......... Warren is now advancing a different theory—that big corporations’ political influence and market dominance are killing smaller rivals, and that small-business owners share interests with other victims of corporate power....... While other Democratic presidential hopefuls have questioned the power of the tech giants, Warren’s rhetorical embrace of small business has been emphatic. She is at once bidding for votes that Democrats don’t normally seek and inviting her party to see small businesses in a new light. She’s also reviving what once was a core tenet of her party: In a democracy, a primary purpose for government is to disperse economic power. ........ ....President Franklin D. Roosevelt decried the concentration of economic power in the hands of “new dynasties” of “economic royalists.” “There was no place among this royalty for our many thousands of small-business men and merchants who sought to make a worthy use of the American system of initiative and profit,” Roosevelt declared. “They were no more free than the worker or the farmer.” As Democrats of this era saw it, forming a union and starting a business were two avenues toward the same ends: checking corporate power and giving ordinary people economic agency and a fair share of the returns from their labor..... I’ve talked to hundreds of small-business owners about the challenges they face. Most describe dynamics in their industry that are largely about the exercise of unconstrained market power. In 2016, my organization surveyed more than 3,000 independent businesses. By a 61 percent to 7 percent margin, they said the federal government “should more vigorously enforce antitrust laws.” Right now, though, neither party speaks to these fears and frustrations. It’s not only that Republicans and Democrats alike are corrupted by corporate dollars and lobbyists. Both parties are ideologically captured by the very idea of bigness itself. As a result, efforts by groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to blame government—rather than monopoly power—for the troubles of small business go largely unchallenged...... Warren’s focus on small business is more than an appeal to a constituency that lacks a political home. It’s also a kind of shorthand for Americans’ deep-rooted desire to govern ourselves. Trump's Biggest Whoppers

Trump looking into pardoning military members accused or convicted of war crimes: report "....the president has already began making requests for the necessary paperwork to pardon the servicemen. One of the men Trump is reportedly seeking to pardon is Navy SEAL Edward Gallagher, who was charged last year for a number of war crimes, including stabbing and murdering a wounded person and shooting at unarmed Iraqi civilians. A few months after he was charged, Trump was met with criticism after he said in March that Gallagher would soon be moved to "less restrictive confinement” in “honor of his past service” to the nation. Another one of the cases Trump is allegedly looking at involves a group of Marine who were charged with **** on a dead Taliban member. The officials said they believe the president is also allegedly considering a pardon for Nicholas Slatten, a former Blackwater security guard who was convicted last year for his role in a 2007 shooting of unarmed Iraqi civilians. The officials told The Times that the White House issued the paperwork requests to begin the pardoning process on Friday. America's Gun Culture...

Beto O’Rourke: Here’s how I'd stop gun violence [Opinion] "........ We cannot accept that this is an act of God or that Americans are fated to be inherently violent. This is a human-caused problem with a human solution. .... First, universal background checks without exceptions. Close the boyfriend loophole, the Charleston loophole, the gun show loophole, the online loophole — no more loopholes and no more excuses for refusing to close them. .... Second, stop selling assault weapons that were designed, engineered, and sold to the United States military for the express purpose of killing people as effectively, as efficiently, in as great a number as possible. ....... Third, let's adopt red flag laws — not one city or one state at a time, but for this entire country. ..... Fourth, we must treat this crisis with the urgency it deserves. We must demand bold solutions and ensure ambitious plans are on the table and part of the discussion. We will also fully invest in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and research into gun violence so we can not only continue to understand what’s happening but begin to address it. ........ And finally, let’s make sure that in addition to mass shootings at schools, places of worship, and concerts, we also acknowledge that we are losing far too many people one or two at a time in communities of color. ....." https://www.houstonchronicle.com/opinion/outlook/article/Beto-O-Rourke-Here-s-how-I-d-stop-gun-13854698.php?utm_campaign=sftwitter&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=twitter.com

    The Triumph of Donald Trump

AG Barr's FBI investigation, President Trump and the threat from within By perpetuating Trump's falsehoods about the FBI and Mueller's report, Barr has become the kind of threat capable of doing severe harm. "..... Barr has already etched his legacy as a politically motivated AG. He issued a misleading summary of the special counsel’s findings, unilaterally proclaimed there was “no collusion” between the campaign and Russia although Mueller limited his search to only criminal conspiracy and decided that Trump did not commit obstruction of justice despite Mueller specifically stating that the president could not be exonerated and had committed 10 acts that could constitute obstruction. Barr also chose to refer to lawful investigation of Russia’s influence in our presidential campaign as “spying,” knowing full well that the word implied illegal acts as alleged by his seeming client, President Donald Trump........ ...our current attorney general would have us believe the myth that some kind of deep state resides within the corridors of our most trusted institutions, a conspiracy theory the president’s supporters have repeatedly echoed. Despite ongoing related investigations by a capable DOJ inspector general, Barr wants us to believe, as does his boss, that our system is broken and that the only fix lies outside the practices and policies that served our democracy for centuries. We don’t know if Barr’s decisions are malicious, self-serving or simply ignorant. But by perpetuating the president’s falsehoods and eroding Americans’ trust in our institutions, Barr has become the kind of threat capable of doing severe harm; he has become a threat from within." https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/ag-barr-s-fbi-investigation-president-trump-threat-within-ncna1006996

  19. Jill Wine-Banks‏Verified account @JillWineBanks 6h6 hours ago Here's something I wrote showing why Ds should proceed to hearings, and likely impeachment. Data shows it won't hurt Ds, won't help Trump, and without holding Trump accountable for the crimes in plain sight, democracy is at risk ------------------------------------------------------ The Balance Has Shifted: The Data on Impeachment Favor Moving Ahead "....... it solves the political conundrum at the center of the debate about how to balance the potential political impact of impeachment on the 2020 election with the moral and constitutional obligations of Congress to hold this president accountable in the face of the corruption and wrongdoing reported in the Mueller Report and the nightly news. ... Unlike Clinton, Nixon faced – as Trump does now – grave charges of abuse of power, ignoring Congressional subpoenas, obstruction of justice by misuse of government agencies, firing federal investigators, hush money payments, dangling pardons, perjury and subornation of perjury, witness tampering, and stonewalling Congress. As in the case of Nixon, Trump aides (plus Russians in the case of Trump) were indicted and convicted or pleaded guilty. No Clinton aides were ever indicted. It was not organized crime. In fact, the case for impeachment of Trump is stronger because he has engaged in a broader stonewalling than Nixon ever did....... – Congressional Democrats must fully engage the process of public education that is a necessary prerequisite for action — either impeachment or removal by the voters in 2020. Public hearings would allow the public and the Senate to fairly judge the culpability of the incumbent. ........ Without a common base for discussion, we can never reach consensus, but a public hearing could change that by letting the American people observe witnesses’ words and demeanors for themselves. The bubbles we all live in can be penetrated by such evidence, just as it was in the Manafort trial and the Watergate Senate and impeachment hearings. This is why we must have public hearings.... Not only will impeachment of Trump not hurt Democrats in 2020, it is essential to preserving Congress as a co-equal branch of government as our Founders intended and is essential to Congress fulfilling its constitutional and moral obligations. for those with HULU....... -------------------------------------- Catch-22 Mines Madness and Magic From a Classic George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s six-part Hulu adaptation of Joseph Heller’s novel is a surprising success. "...... in its final episodes Catch-22 finds its emotional core, as well as its best moments of tragicomedy. There are scenes I can’t stop thinking about for the quiet ways in which they illustrate the cost of conflict, as well as set pieces that take your breath away with their synchronized grace and then their arbitrary horror. Through it all, Yossarian is the lens through which viewers see war, a self-confessed coward who’s by far the bravest man in a battalion. Catch-22, again, isn’t perfect, because Heller’s book is far too prickly and paradoxical for an easy interpretation. But it’s almost always faithful to what Heller wanted to communicate and—in its finest scenes—transcendent. Any 'must-see' TV ?

The Weekly Highlight: “What We Do in the Shadows,” Season 1. FX debuted this new adaptation of the 2015 movie on March 27. Premise: A group of immortal vampires share a house together in contemporary Staten Island. These vampires have to balance their perpetual need to drink human blood with their general laziness and incompetence. Jemaine Clement created the show and wrote the first episode, while he and Taika Waititi ― who directed the first episode ― also executive produce. Both Clement and Waititi created and starred in the original movie together. Sum-up: Shot in a documentary style, this show has a similar comedic sensibility to “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation.” Characters talk to the camera by themselves to tell one-off jokes and sometimes a character will even do that knowing-stare-at-the-camera made famous by Jim Halpert from “The Office.” Even though the documentary format and the vampire-based subject matter are both well-tread conceits, “What We Do in the Shadows” still has enough originality to be its own thing.... https://www.huffpost.com/entry/new-show-watch-shadows_l_5c9a7b8de4b07c88662cabef?ncid=tweetlnkushpmg00000067
