  1. 7 Questions We Would Have Asked Donald Trump At His Canceled Press Conference- President-elect Donald Trump promised a press conference Thursday to clarify the role he would have with his international business entanglements after he becomes president. He canceled. The transition team said Monday that Trump is delaying his "announcement" until January. Later that night, Trump took to his favorite medium to go around the filter — Twitter — and made some news about his plans: It’s been 140 days since Donald Trump’s last press conference. In the meantime, he’s tweeted 1,461 times. Why does this matter?Unlike other ways of getting messages out, press conferences hold public officials more accountable to the American people because they have to answer questions in an uncontrolled environment..... http://www.npr.org/2016/12/15/505630205/6-questions-we-would-have-asked-donald-trump-at-his-canceled-press-conference?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=npr&utm_term=nprnews&utm_content=2043

Mon., 2-20 for Dolores Del Rio.... 8:00 PM (ET) B/W - 73 m Devil's Playground (1937) Synopsis: Dir: Erle C. Kenton Cast: Richard Dix , Dolores Del Rio , Chester Morris . ".... Devil's Playground (1937). It's a Navy tale about submariners and her character Carmen is the center of a love triangle. At Warner Bros., she had been starring in costume pictures and supporting top stars like Al Jolson, so the Navy 'service drama' is indeed a step or two rungs down the career ladder. Not only is Devil's Playground an ordinary program picture, but it's a second remake of a silent picture directed by Columbia's top talent Frank Capra. .... see: http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/73020/Devil-s-Playground/articles.html LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: 😧 Erle C. Kenton. Richard Dix, Dolores Del Rio, Chester Morris, Pierre Watkin, Ward Bond. Good combination of action and romance with diver Dix discovering wife Del Rio in love with Morris; exciting underwater climax. Remake of 1928 Frank Capra film SUBMARINE.

Wed., 4-9 under "Fan Programmers" (picked by Glenn Taranto) 12:00 AM (times ET) 93 min war Went the Day Well? (1942) An English village is occupied by disguised German paratroopers as an advance post for a planned invasion. Dir: [Alberto] Cavalcanti LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Alberto Cavalcanti. Cast: Leslie Banks, Elizabeth Allan, Frank Lawton, Mervyn Johns, Basil Sydney, David Farrar, Marie Lohr, C.V. France, Thora Hird. "Wartime melodrama laced with humor about Germans invading a rural British community. Too sly and well written to be dismissed as mere propaganda; a most intriguing time capsule. Screenplay by John Dighton, Angus MacPhail, and Diana Morgan from a Graham Greene story. And remember: this story, told as a flashback at the end of WW2, was actually made at its peak, when the outcome was far from certain." Former Army lawyer rips Trump’s scheme to pardon war criminals: "Former U.S. Army Judge Advocate General Glenn Kirschner on Saturday ripped President Donald Trump after The New York Times reported President Donald Trump was considering pardoning war criminals. “As a former career prosecutor, including 6 years as an Army JAG, this makes me sick,” he said. .....“Today I saw this NYT’s article that Trump is ginning up pardons of soldiers who criminally killed others, intending to use it as some sort of twisted Memorial Day celebration,” he noted. “Among the pardons reportedly being contemplated are cases involving the Blackwater security firm..... The defendants were US civilians (veterans) who were being paid to perform security services in Iraq. Multiple Blackwater employees opened fire on innocent Iraqis in what was a massacre in broad daylight. They killed 14 unarmed Iraqi citizens and injured 17 others in front of dozens of witnesses “Some of the testifying witnesses were the defendants own Blackwater teammates,”....... It was important that the perpetrators of those horrific offenses were brought to justice. Now Trump, in a twisted, grotesque “celebration” of Memorial Day, wants to pardon these and other murderers?” “What message is he really trying to send to the military?” Kirschner noted....., https://www.rawstory.com/2019/05/former-army-lawyer-rips-trumps-scheme-to-pardon-war-criminals-this-makes-me-sick/
  11. There’s a Reason Many Voters Have Negative Views of Warren—But the Press Won’t Tell You Why The media have focused on her comparatively low approval ratings—but not the misogyny that drives them. ".....Mentioning the right’s attacks on Warren plus her low approval ratings while citing her “very liberal record” and the controversy surrounding her alleged Native American heritage implies a causal relationship between these facts. Warren is a lefty who has made controversial ancestral claims. Ergo, Republicans attack her, and many Americans don’t like her very much. But that equation is misleading. The better explanation for why Warren attracts disproportionate conservative criticism, and has disproportionately high disapproval ratings, has nothing to do with her progressive economic views or her dalliance with DNA testing. It’s that she’s a woman... Warren’s relatively low numbers appear driven by her unpopularity among men. When the University of Massachusetts asked state residents whom they support in the 2020 Democratic primary, Warren tied with Biden among women. Among men, she trailed him by 16 points. ............ What all this ignores is the harsh truth that when women politicians—especially women politicians who embrace a feminist agenda—overtly seek power, many American men, and some American women, react with “moral outrage.” They may not express that outrage in explicitly gendered terms, just as they may not express their anxiety about a black candidate in explicitly racial terms. They may instead cite DNA testing or hidden emails or San Francisco’s cultural liberalism. Or they may simply say they find the candidate’s mannerisms off-putting. The media’s role is to dig deeper: to interpret these specific discomforts in light of the deeper discomfort that Americans again and again express with ambitious women..... Journalists shouldn’t ignore electability. Elizabeth Warren’s comparatively low approval ratings are a legitimate news story. But the bigger story is that Americans still judge women politicians far more harshly than they judge their male competitors. Unless journalists name that unfairness, they risk perpetuating it. That's real." ================================= Trump asking farmers to make ‘patriotic’ sacrifices in his trade war The president is issuing a rare political call for American workers to take on pain in the name of a greater good. "........ For farmers across America’s rural communities — particularly those struggling to keep their businesses afloat — Trump’s latest appeal risks sounding ill-timed and redundant. Justice in America?

Texas Tribune‏Verified account @TexasTribune Feb 16 75% of people in Texas jails have not been convicted of any crime. Many can’t afford bail. Those defendants sit in jail, waiting, while others who can pay go free. #txlege ====================================== Courts have called Texas bail practices unconstitutional. Will that push this year's reform efforts to success? Two years after a bail reform bill died in the Legislature, new bail legislation has other factors working in its favor. "........To illustrate what he considers a flawed system, he cited the case of a grandmother who was kept in jail for about two months on a $150,000 bond after allegedly shoplifting $105 worth of clothes for her grandchildren. The bipartisan legislation filed Monday aims to help poor, low-level defendants get out of jail on free bonds and keep in jail those thought to be flight risks or threats to public safety. The proposed risk-assessment tool would have to be used within two days of arrest to help judges determine the defendant’s level of risk based on criminal history, not just the current offense. The bills are similar to last session’s, when legislation passed the Senate but died before reaching the House floor. late Sun., 5-19 'Bobby Bumps' silent shorts.... 12:30 AM (ET) " Said to be based on the popular early 20th century comic strip (and later shoe company mascot) Buster Brown, Bobby Bumps was the lead character in a series of animated shorts created by Earl Hurd for the Bray Studios, a print comics company that moved into cinema early on with great success. Bobby Bumps was a little boy who, along with his dog Fido, managed to get himself into mischief over and over.... The most significant fact about the Bobby Bumps series was that these cartoons were the first to be produced using the cel animation process developed by Hurd and patented by him and Bray. .... The shorts have to be viewed with an understanding of a far different and less enlightened time, considering two rather offensive characters often seen in the films, Bobby's black friend Choc'late and the stereotypical Bumps family maid Goldie." The shorts in the series to be screened by TCM include: Bobby Bumps and His Pointer Pup (1916) Bobby Bumps Helps a Book Agent (1916) Bobby Bumps' Fly Swatter (1916) Bobby Bumps Gets a Substitute (1916) Bobby Bumps Adopts a Turtle (1917) Bobby Bumps at Fido's Birthday Party (1917) Bobby Bumps, Chef (1917) Bobby Bumps, Surf Rider (1917) Bobby Bumps at the Dentist (1918) Bobby Bumps Caught in the Jamb (1918) Bobby Bumps' Last Smoke (1919) Bobby Bumps in Hunting and Fishing (1921) Bobby Bumps in Their Master's Voice (1921) see TCM article: http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/2165010/Bobby-Bumps-Caught-in-the-Jamb/articles.html

    Elizabeth Warren Pres. Candidacy.....

Elizabeth Warren Has a Theory About Corporate Power The left forgot what Roosevelt knew: Small businesses and corporate behemoths have different interests. ".......... Warren is now advancing a different theory—that big corporations’ political influence and market dominance are killing smaller rivals, and that small-business owners share interests with other victims of corporate power....... While other Democratic presidential hopefuls have questioned the power of the tech giants, Warren’s rhetorical embrace of small business has been emphatic. She is at once bidding for votes that Democrats don’t normally seek and inviting her party to see small businesses in a new light. She’s also reviving what once was a core tenet of her party: In a democracy, a primary purpose for government is to disperse economic power. ........ ....President Franklin D. Roosevelt decried the concentration of economic power in the hands of “new dynasties” of “economic royalists.” “There was no place among this royalty for our many thousands of small-business men and merchants who sought to make a worthy use of the American system of initiative and profit,” Roosevelt declared. “They were no more free than the worker or the farmer.” As Democrats of this era saw it, forming a union and starting a business were two avenues toward the same ends: checking corporate power and giving ordinary people economic agency and a fair share of the returns from their labor..... I’ve talked to hundreds of small-business owners about the challenges they face. Most describe dynamics in their industry that are largely about the exercise of unconstrained market power. In 2016, my organization surveyed more than 3,000 independent businesses. By a 61 percent to 7 percent margin, they said the federal government “should more vigorously enforce antitrust laws.” Right now, though, neither party speaks to these fears and frustrations. It’s not only that Republicans and Democrats alike are corrupted by corporate dollars and lobbyists. Both parties are ideologically captured by the very idea of bigness itself. As a result, efforts by groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to blame government—rather than monopoly power—for the troubles of small business go largely unchallenged...... Warren’s focus on small business is more than an appeal to a constituency that lacks a political home. It’s also a kind of shorthand for Americans’ deep-rooted desire to govern ourselves. " https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/05/elizabeth-warren-speaks-out-small-business/589510/
