    Trump & the Saudis?

POLITICO‏Verified account @politico Senators push vote to block Saudi arms sales after Khashoggi disappearance --------------------------------------------- Seth Abramson‏Verified account @SethAbramson 58m58 minutes ago Seth Abramson Retweeted POLITICO Ruh-roh. The Saudis expected not just arms but *nuclear tech and an agreement to let them develop nuclear weapons* for their support of Trump's candidacy. What happens now that even Trump's DC allies say the Saudi Crown Prince's bloodthirsty murder of a WP journalist nixes that?

Aladdin (2019) review- ".....The remake—directed by Guy Ritchie, with Will Smith taking over for the late Robin Williams in the role of The Genie—flips those priorities. That’s not to say that it’s never fun, because it sometimes is—just that it’s more often lumbering, patchy, meandering, and generally bereft of inspiration. It’s a dancing elephant of a movie. It has a few decent moves, but you’d never call it light on its feet. Written by John August (“Big Fish”) and rewritten by Ritchie, with music and songs by Alan Menken (and the late Howard Ashman) plus a couple of original tunes intended to qualify the film for Best Original Song Oscars, the film is unfortunately a perfect illustration of an observation by Josh Raby, summing up this era of both Disney features and computer animation: “Using CGI to turn expressive animated films into photoreal reboots feels like using a magic wand to make a toaster.” ....... This “Aladdin” is two hours and eight minutes long, 37 minutes longer than the original. This is also part of a trend in theatrical films: perhaps the increasingly long average runtimes of special-effects driven blockbusters are a response to complaints that tickets are too expensive, which is actually a way of saying that real wages haven’t risen substantially since the early 1970s: a longer movie = “getting more for your money” ......... As is often the case with the recent Disney remakes, this one seems to adhere to the same misconception that affects the rest of the film industry, particularly where science fiction adventures, superhero narratives, and fairy tales are concerned: that if it’s animated, i.e. a “cartoon,” it’s somehow not a “real movie,” and thus not worthy of the automatic respect bestowed upon the most expensive and heavily promoted motion pictures, ........ https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/aladdin-2019 ========================================= & PLEASE STOP w/lame CGI remakes of animated Classics!!

    The Triumph of Donald Trump

The 'Wall' Scandal Sums Up All of Trump’s Failures The president has been intervening in the process of producing a border wall, on behalf of a favored firm. ......Trump has repeatedly pressured the Army Corps of Engineers and the Department of Homeland Security to award a contract for building a wall at the southern U.S. border to a North Dakota company headed by a leading Republican donor. The story demonstrates the shortcomings of Trump’s attempt to bring private-sector techniques into government. It shows his tendency toward cronyism, his failures as a negotiator, and the ease with which a fairly primitive attention campaign can sway him........ what it really exemplifies is Trump’s insistence on placing performative gestures over actual efficacy. And it is a concrete example—almost literally—of how the president’s violations of norms weaken the country and waste taxpayer money. The Post reports: In phone calls, White House meetings and conversations aboard Air Force One during the past several months, Trump has aggressively pushed Dickinson, N.D.-based Fisher Industries to Department of Homeland Security leaders and Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite, the commanding general of the Army Corps, Tommy Fisher is a major GOP donor. He has North Dakota’s Republican Senator Kevin Cramer in his corner. He’s already working on a private-sector attempt to build a barrier on private land in New Mexico, which is backed by close Trump allies such as Steve Bannon, the former White House strategist; Erik Prince, the founder of Blackwater and brother of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos; and Kris Kobach, the former vice chair of Trump’s voter-fraud commission, who was under consideration as his “immigration czar.” Moreover, Tommy Fisher has wisely made himself a fixture on Fox News,.... Trump’s obsession with Fisher is a triumph for the company. Even as Fisher has failed to follow guidelines and changed its vision of the wall, it continues to insist it can magically do the job better and faster than anyone else. These sort of pie-in-the-sky claims, in any realm, should raise alarm bells. They do not for Trump, ....... If that means hassling the Army Corps to award a contract to a crony whose promises have fallen short repeatedly, so be it. If that means the wall that goes up ends up not being all that effective at stopping border crossings, or if it’s over budget, or if it’s behind schedule, so be it —so long as those bills come due after November 3, 2020. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/05/trump-border-wall-contractor/590242/?utm_campaign=the-atlantic&utm_medium=social&utm_content=edit-promo&utm_source=facebook&utm_term=2019-05-24T17%3A02%3A16&fbclid=IwAR3Kqv4o2dJDVeQ_dQJlb4eYewqChFspZWDrGvrTQcUpKC-z_MK8BI2DhPs

    Trump & the Saudis?

The Trump Administration Is Declaring a Fake Emergency to Sell Weapons to Saudi Arabia "The Trump administration chose the Friday afternoon before Memorial Day weekend to invoke an obscure state-of-emergency provision that would allow it to sell billions of dollars in weapons to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates without giving Congress a chance to block the sale. A Democratic congressional source told The Intercept on Friday that the administration was using the measure to clear a backlog of more than 20 proposed arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the UAE, many of which would be blocked if they came to a vote in the Senate......... Under the rarely used provision, however, the president can certify that “an emergency exists” and that an immediate transfer is necessary for “the national security interests of the United States.” In a statement on Friday, Sen. Bob Menedez, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said that in notifying Congress of its plans, the Trump administration had “described years of malign Iranian behavior but failed to identify what actually constitutes an emergency today.”....... Sen. Chris Murphy, who warned days ago that the Trump administration would try to circumvent Congress, said that President Donald Trump is only using the loophole because he knows he cannot sell weapons to Saudi Arabia any other way. “There is no new ‘emergency’ reason to sell bombs to the Saudis to drop in Yemen, and doing so only perpetuates the humanitarian crisis there,” Murphy said in a statement Friday....... https://theintercept.com/2019/05/24/us-saudi-arabia-arms-sales/?fbclid=IwAR3hbsjlr-zPnFXmGJhD6jzx90fui0E4L6V02pgXpbNt5ZHx400abC3jfWM

    GOP madness Unbound...

1 GOP Rep Is Keeping Millions In Disaster Relief From Americans Who Need It Rep. Chip Roy of Texas stalled a bill that would give billions to areas recovering from hurricanes, flooding, tornadoes and wildfires. A $19.1 billion disaster-relief bill seemed headed for quick passage by the House on Friday following Senate approval and the backing of President Donald Trump. But because of the objection of a lone GOP member ― Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, who’s upset the legislation doesn’t include money Trump initially demanded for border security ― disaster-stricken Americans will have to wait. .......... https://www.huffpost.com/entry/were-you-the-victim-of-a-natural-disaster-gop-rep-chip-roy-doesnt-care_n_5ce81b52e4b0a2f9f28e9dd8?ncid=tweetlnkushpmg00000067
  18. FBI Sees ‘Challenging’ Battle Against Domestic Terror Amid Rise In White Supremacist Threat “Terrorism moves at the speed of social media,” an FBI official said. “The flash to bang has become even shorter.” ........The FBI official said the bureau has seen a significant increase in white supremacist domestic terrorism investigations since the fall. The number of arrests of racially motivated violent extremists has gone up about 30% to 40% from the last fiscal year, the official said, though the bureau did not provide precise figures. The bureau has about 850 ongoing domestic terrorism investigations and nearly 5,000 ongoing terrorism probes in total. The domestic terrorism threat has evolved, the official said, away from large conspiracies and toward lone offenders, which makes the threats more insular and more difficult to detect. Just as in the foreign terrorism space, the official said, domestic terrorists are being radicalized online....... But the lack of a federal domestic terrorism statute has posed challenges for law enforcement in cases where a defendant has yet to go through with an attack. Often they’ll charge potential domestic terrorists with other crimes ― sometimes a charge involving guns or drugs or lying to the FBI ― to take a target into custody and end the threat. ............ https://www.huffpost.com/entry/domestic-terrorism-fbi-white-supremacy_n_5ce6e695e4b0a2f9f28ba855?gsw

Those defendants sit in jail, waiting, while others who can pay go free. #txlege ====================================== Courts have called Texas bail practices unconstitutional. Will that push this year's reform efforts to success? Two years after a bail reform bill died in the Legislature, new bail legislation has other factors working in its favor. "........To illustrate what he considers a flawed system, he cited the case of a grandmother who was kept in jail for about two months on a $150,000 bond after allegedly shoplifting $105 worth of clothes for her grandchildren. The bipartisan legislation filed Monday aims to help poor, low-level defendants get out of jail on free bonds and keep in jail those thought to be flight risks or threats to public safety. The proposed risk-assessment tool would have to be used within two days of arrest to help judges determine the defendant’s level of risk based on criminal history, not just the current offense. The bills are similar to last session’s, when legislation passed the Senate but died before reaching the House floor.
