  1. Why Police Are Hated

I found this on a website about John Wayne: America's entry into World War II resulted in a deluge of support for the war effort from all sectors of society, and Hollywood was no exception. John Wayne was exempted from service due to his age (34 at the time of Pearl Harbor) and family status, classified as 3-A (family deferment). He repeatedly wrote John Ford saying he wanted to enlist, on one occasion inquiring whether he could get into Ford's military unit, but Ford consistently kept postponing it until after "he finished just one or two pictures". Wayne did not attempt to prevent his reclassification as 1-A (draft eligible), but Republic Studios was emphatically resistant to losing him; Herbert J. Yates, President of Republic, threatened Wayne with a lawsuit if he walked away from his contract, and Republic Pictures intervened in the Selective Service process, requesting Wayne's further deferment. Wayne toured U.S. bases and hospitals in the South Pacific for three months in 1943 and 1944, with the USO. By many accounts, Wayne's failure to serve in the military was the most painful experience of his life. His widow later suggested that his patriotism in later decades sprang from guilt, writing: "He would become a 'super patriot' for the rest of his life trying to atone for staying home."
  2. The Third Man

Boy! Do I EVER agree with you about the ridiculous ending to FROM HERE TO ETERNITY! I won't even show that wonderful movie to my son because of that. I try to interest him in older movies (before the 1980's)...
  3. Healthy Recipes

The most important thing you can do to improve your health is to cut out sugar from your diet. Try to stop drinking those sodas! They are like a slow poison to your system... Also, if you eat cereal for breakfast, you should probably eat only original Shredded Wheat which has no sugar. Have it with banana slices or blueberries. Too bad you can't eat yogurt. I would recommend yogurt with fruit, also. My main health program is walking. I try to walk 30 minutes a day, 6 days a week. Of course, you must work up to that. Start with 10 minutes a day about 4 days a week and work up to 30 minutes a day 6 days a week. Do this over a 3 month period. I used to weigh 205 pounds and had some health problems. Not good for a 69 year old! So, about three years ago, I almost completely cut out sugar from my diet and started walking. I now weigh 145 pounds and feel much, much better. Try to find a book called "The 90-day Fitness Walking Program" by Mark Fenton and Seth Bauer. It will really help you get into walking. I wish you good luck! It will change your life!

  5. How to post a pic in easy steps, with pics!

Hmm... Didn't quite turn out the way I wanted it to. Should have been full size.
  6. How to post a pic in easy steps, with pics!

I'm having a problem figuring out how to post a picture. Sorry.
  7. Lets name films that TCM doesn't show anymore

Harvey (1950) I think TCM showed it about a year ago.
  8. "That Word!"-----AGAIN!

Of course the word is D-A-M-N. Can't you just hear Rex Harrison saying: "D-a-m-n, d-a-m-n, d-a-m-n, d-a-m-n! I've grown accustomed to her face!" Seriously, though, I really do agree with "riverrocks" that the 4-letter word is probably "d-a-m-n" . Just the sort of word that the grumpy old sea captain would use...
  9. Hello ben42day, I think you've got a good idea. I would like to see TCM show some more current movies, too. One genre I like is war movies and other action movies... For example: "To Hell and Back" (1955) "Hell Is For Heroes" (1962) "The Longest Day" (1962) "The Great Escape" (1963) "In Harm's Way" (1965) "The Bridge At Remagen" (1969) "A Bridge Too Far" (1977) "The Big Red One" (1979) "The Right Stuff" (1983) "The Hunt for Red October" (1990)
  10. THE WIDOW FROM CHICAGO 7:30 AM Fri. GREAT MOVIE!

    Thanks, Fred. Alice White...yummy!
  11. Village of the Damned.... good film

You're right. I had not seen "All About Eve", and have not to this day. I would like to, though. Very much. I've requested it a couple of times on the "Request a Movie" page.
  12. Village of the Damned.... good film

I never realized how wonderful George Sanders was until I saw this movie several years ago. After seeing him in this movie, he became one of my favorite actors.
  13. Why No Beatles Films on TCM?

Thank you mr6666 for mentioning the 2 hour special that will be airing on CBS on February 9. I have my DVR set to record it. I love the Beatles! :-) Thanks again!
  14. British Badguys

I don't know why British actors are considered bad guys... Maybe it *is* the accent. Although, personally I love the accent. I first thought of James Mason. But then I thought of one of the greatest bad guys of all time: The great and wonderful, *Boris Karloff!*
