Brigitte Bardot movies not in Canada!!!

Last night, TFO aired Roman Polanski's "Tess" in English with French subtitles, for example: http://www1.tfo.org/cine/blog/LA-MAGIE-DU-CINEMA-A-L-OEUVRE-Tess-de-Roman-Polanski

Well, that's a good point. Here is what appears to be a publicity photo by Otto Dyar showing Lillian Roth and has the code number 787-2/15: http://www.auctiva.com/hostedimages/showimage.aspx?gid=375154&ppid=1122&image=687377347&images=687377347,687377310&formats=0,0&format=0 On the reverse of the photo, it states: "Mammy! -- Showing just how all blues singers at some time or other imitate Al Jolson. Lillian Roth, featured in Paramount's "Honey", is the girl who gives the mammy blues." http://www.auctiva.com/hostedimages/showimage.aspx?gid=375154&ppid=1122&image=687377310&images=687377347,687377310&formats=0,0&format=0 So it appears to be a studio photo (publicity still) with the code number for "Honey" - starting with 787 - that was used for publicity for the flick. Have no idea if Roth wears the dress or blackface in "Honey." "Honey" (1930) was a musical flick with Paramount's big star at the time, Nancy Carroll, being topbilled. It takes place on a plantation in the U.S. South with Carroll going gaga over Stanley Smith, and Lillian Roth going gaga over "Skeets" Gallagher. ZaSu Pitts, Jobyna Howland, Mitzi Green, and Harry Green provide comic relief. Roth has a big song and dance number with African Americans for the song "Sing You Sinners" (Roth doesn't join the action until about the 4:00 minute mark of the clip): Reviews for "Honey" here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0020986/reviews?ref_=tt_ql_8 This photo - code number 787-6/73 - shows Lillian Roth and "Skeets" Gallagher in "Honey": http://bp0.blogger.com/_bdtuKKCTCf4/RmtDVDpT3RI/AAAAAAAAC3o/Thbggel5bU8/s1600/Roth+%26+Gallagher+-+1930.jpg Have no idea what's up with Gallagher holding his cigarette the way he is in the photo... They're supposed to be sweeties in the film - "Gee, think I'll use my honey's mouth as an ashtray..." Here's another code number 787-124 showing Stanley Smith and Nancy Carroll from "Honey": http://www.corbisimages.com/images/Corbis-JS1263109.jpg?size=67&uid=984df79e-3df8-48bd-bb69-34d90bb3e8af Carroll plays the plantation owner in the flick but she pretends to be a maid after she rents the plantation to Jobyna Howland and her daughter played by Lillian Roth. Carroll meets and she falls for Roth's fiance Stanley Smith. But that's apparently ok as Roth falls for another dude - "Skeets" Gallagher. Here's another by photographer E.A. Schoenbaun (name on reverse of photo) of Smith and Carroll for "Honey" with the code number 787-99: http://www.ebay.com/itm/DI140-Photo-NANCY-CARROLL-STANLEY-SMITH-Honey-1930-/351162529550?pt=Art_Photo_Images&hash=item51c2eaf70e Anyway, now you know probably more than you ever wanted to know about "Honey." As for the "mystery" silhouette, it's a good point that it could be a publicity photo done by someone like Otto Dyar or E.A Schoenbaun that was used by the studio. But I believe the code number on the "mystery" (787-235) relates it to "Honey" and it could very well be a publicity still for the film. Still, it's probably either Lillian Roth or Nancy Carroll. I'll try and find out more when I have time. But only so much I can do from my perch up in the Great White North. I believe the Paramount archives are waaaaaaay down in L.A. : http://collections.oscars.org/link/photos/1104/ P.S. Some other Paramount movie still/publicity still codes are 791 for 1930's "Let's Go Native": http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UeLEBDP0hnM/UbqfjJydUtI/AAAAAAAABWw/s5lDIKm_K64/s1600/letsgonativeeeee.jpg http://www.corbisimages.com/stock-photo/rights-managed/JS1568040/frances-curran-and-joan-palmer-in-dressing?popup=1 And 795 for 1930's "The Devil's Holiday" (Nancy Carroll was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar in this one): https://www.flickr.com/photos/alicejapan/sets/72157625998396673/detail/

No problem... Like to help, if I can... Check out this still from "Honey" - code number 787-245 - showing Nancy Carroll: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1940S-NANCY-CARROLL-in-HONEY-MOVIE-PHOTOGRAPH-/380852172766?pt=Art_Photo_Images&hash=item58ac8ef7de So it's either Carroll or Roth in the silhouette. Probably Roth, but further Sherlocking when I have time may find out conclusively. P.S. The site linked to above states the still is from the 1940's. That is mistaken as "Honey" is from 1930.

Brigitte Bardot movies not in Canada!!!

Was at a local Goodwill last night checking things out - there was a 50% off sale - and saw a Bardot biography. Can't remember which one but did think about buying it, before passing. Would have been $2.00 It's probably still there today... Also saw a BFI Film Classics copy of "Meet Me in St. Louis." It's also probably still there today too... P.S. That's $2.00 Canuck, equals $1.80 Yankee today...

Howdy, Think the clue to the silhouette photo is the movie still number in the lower right corner: 787-235. The movie studios had their own systems for organizing movie stills. Paramount marked their stills sequentially with numbers that correspond to each film. For example, this website lists the movie still code numbers for silents: http://www.silentfilmstillarchive.com/identify2.htm As far as I know, the movie still code 787 corresponds to the 1930 flick "Honey" (I've also seen the number 1241 on some stills but many with 787), starring Nancy Carroll, Lillian Roth, Mitzi Green, "Skeets" Gallagher, Jobyna Howland, etc: http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/78290/Honey/ Richard Finegan at NitrateVille supports this too: http://www.nitrateville.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=10339&start=750#p92953 You can also see for yourselves at this site that purports to show stills from 1930's "Love Among the Millionaires" but are actually stills from "Honey": http://www.ebay.com/itm/SKEETS-GALLAGHER-FOUR-4-Original-1930-Paramount-Studio-PRESS-PHOTOGRAPHS-/270945976525 How do I know it's "Honey" and not "Love Among the Millionaires" as stated? One of the photos (787-101) shows Mitzi Green and Jobyna Howland. The problem is that Howland was not in "Love Among the Millionaires" but was in "Honey." This still (787-76) from another website shows Green and Howland from "Honey": http://www.ebay.com/itm/Movie-Photograph-Mitzi-Green-Nancy-Carroll-Honey-/360244846339 Another still shows Lillian Roth and "Skeets" Gallagher (787-72) but Roth wasn't in "Love Among the Millionaires" but was in "Honey." You can see for yourselves by viewing this clip from "Honey": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bg3wHqFbjrY At the 3:00 minute mark, you see Gallagher and Roth with Roth wearing the same dress as in the movie still above 787-72. The only problem is the last still that shows Stuart Erwin and Barbara Bennett (787-209) as they were in "Love Among the Millionaires" and not "Honey." But, it's actually Harry Green and ZaSu Pitts from "Honey." See this still (787-203) from another website: http://www.ebay.ie/itm/PO835-Photo-ZASU-PITTS-HARRY-GREEN-Honey-1930-/331301305944?pt=Art_Photo_Images&hash=item4d2318be58 Notice the ironwork on the bench in the still above and how it matches that in the other movie still purporting to be Erwin and Bennett. Also check out Pitts hair and compare. No doubt it's Green and Pitts and not Erwin and Bennett. Here's another still from "Honey" showing ZaSu Pitts (787-157): http://www.ebay.ca/itm/EO667-CGC-Photo-ZASU-PITTS-Honey-1930-/311075253330?pt=Art_Photo_Images&hash=item486d87ac52 The mystery silhouette still is numbered 787-235 and so I believe is from "Honey" and probably shows Lillian Roth. I suppose it could be Nancy Carroll as well?? Seeing the 1930 flick "Honey" would probably help in placing the context of the movie still 787-235 and who the actress is - Roth or Carroll - from that film. Anybody seen "Honey"? I'll do more Sherlocking when I have more time... Ciao

Brigitte Bardot movies not in Canada!!!

Greetings fellow Canuck! It's unfortunate that the Bardot films weren't aired on TCM in Canada. I don't know exactly why not because we don't have direct access on the message board to TCM to ask and get a response. But I do know that there are many French-language TV channels in Quebec and elsewhere that could have the rights for Canada. French films are popular in Quebec for the French-language audience there and here in Ontario, TFO airs many French films for the French-speaking audience here. That includes films starring Brigitte Bardot. For example: http://www1.tfo.org/cine/horaire-tfo/et-dieu-crea-la-femme TFO's schedule until the end of September 2014 (in PDF) is here: http://www1.tfo.org/cine/Passeport TFO's new schedule isn't up, yet, so I can't check for Bardot films. TFO also airs many foreign films with either French subtitles or dubbing in French. And I've even seen Hollywood and British films aired in English with French subtitles. TFO's main page is here: http://www1.tfo.org/cine/ Or some other TV channel like HollywoodSuite could have the film rights?? I really don't know. There is a thread where we try and list the changes and substitution films for Canada beforehand (I didn't do the September schedule changes): http://forums.tcm.com/index.php?/topic/48429-tcm-canada-schedule/?hl=%2Bcanada+%2Bschedule Your best bet for up-to-date information is to check the online schedule for Canada, daily or weekly: http://www.tcm.com/schedule/canada/weekly.html?tz=MST&sdate=2014-09-22 Or monthly: http://www.tcm.com/schedule/canada/monthly.html And TCM's "Now Playing" guide indicates films that won't air in Canada (but doesn't provide the replacements).

  11. TCM having another quickie contest for free tickets to an Hollywood Bowl event. This time it's for a "Sound of Music" sing-a-long on Sept. 20: http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/tickets/sing-long-sound-of-music/2014-09-20 25 winners of four free tickets each to the event will be chosen by TCM. Enter at the TCM Facebook website by answering a trivia question correctly: https://www.facebook.com/tcmtv The trivia question is: Who makes her debut screen appearance in THE SOUND OF MUSIC ('65), although film audiences already knew her voice well from THE KING AND I ('56), WEST SIDE STORY ('61) & MY FAIR LADY ('64)? No substitution or transfer of prizes or cash redemptions permitted by Winners. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute any prize(s) of like value forany reason whatsoever. Winners are responsible for the reporting and payment of all federal, state and local taxes(if any) required by Sponsor. Prizes are awarded “as is” with no warranty orguarantee, either express or implied by Sponsor." This is the second "quickie" contest ( I call it that because it is only open to enter for two days) for ticket packages to an event at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. I can understand why entries are limited to California as the prizes are tickets only and TCM does not provide air fare and accomodations. And there may be other reasons limiting the contest to Californians that I'm unaware of. Anyway, users on the message board who reside in Cali are free to enter these "quickies" and I'll report them as they pop up on TCM Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tcmtv Nice to hear from u Miss W... I'll try and maintain the percentage coverage... My figures show an 84% match for October between the US and Canuck schedules... That means Canucks get 16% different films than Yanks and that those below the 49th get 16% different flicks than us up here in The Great White North. The other guy on another site on the Internet who did this got in the 80's... So that may be the norm... I'll try and do the monthly percentage from now on...

"Guns for San Sebastian" looks good on Oct. 13/14 at 2:00 a.m. EST: And note my spelling mistake on the October schedule - it's "San Sebastian" and not my "San Sebastion." One more thing. TCM Canada Schedule

<< TCM Canada: keeping Canadians from seeing To Be or not to Be since 2007. >> No idea, Skimpy. We'd need to hear from TCM "rights guy" Lee Tsiantis: http://selfstyledsiren.blogspot.ca/2010/02/matter-of-rights-talk-with-lee-tsiantis.html Also want to mention Hollywood Suite in Canada: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_Suite I don't subscribe to it as part of my cable TV package, so don't watch it, but it airs many classic Hollywood movies in Canada: http://hollywoodsuite.ca/movies/ And "classic" films it airs in Canada here: http://hollywoodsuite.ca/genres/classic/
