  1. I believe you might be right here, midwestan. All I can find on the net is that this ad has been banned in the U.K., and for the following reason: "...regulators said the film is actually a repurposed Greenpeace video and deemed to have breached political impartiality rules. Regulators declare that Iceland’s 2018 Christmas commercial was in breach of rules laid down by the 2003 Communications Act that stipulate that a promotional campaign is prohibited if it is “directed towards a political end”." Gotta say though that in way I kind'a wish WE had some of these same kind'a rules, and not so much to inhibit commercials like THIS from being shown here, but really more because, well, I'M REALLY FREAKING TIRED OF HAVING TO USE THE DAMN MUTE BUTTON ON MY TV'S REMOTE STARTING ABOUT EVERY 6 MONTHS BEFORE EVERY FREAKIN' ELECTION NOW DAYS, AND WHEN CANDIDATES AND THEIR FREAKIN' P.A.C.s START RUNNIN' ALL THOSE INSULTING AND MIND-NUMBINGLY NEGATIVES ADS OF THEIRS!!!! (...but other than that, I sure hope you have a great Christmas this year and filled with pleasant little television commercials, and hopefully featuring cute as hell dogs like the one in the commercial I posted earlier in this thread) LOL

Yeah kingrat, so I guess you never heard that there was talk of Americanizing the thing at one time, huh?! Uh-huh, but while they were in the process of rewriting the lyrics to that one song in it to "The rain in Des Plaines (Illinois, and where the story was to be reset) falls more than it does in Spain", they began to think better of the whole idea and it was called off.

    MetropoLESS!

Great story, well told, Stephan. And so like I was sayin' about you Aviation High students, we pure as the driven snow kids over at Gardena High would have NEVER had....... (...well, you know...uh-huh, yeah sure)

    I'm All Mixed Up!

LOL And now THIS reminds me to wish YOU, MissW, a very Merry Christmaus! (...and a very Happy Neuw Year)

    I'm All Mixed Up!

Yeah, of course I knew that, MissW. (...guess I should have placed one of these here little fellas right after that first sentence of mine up there, eh?!)

AH! Ya see it's THIS very sort'a thing is why I'm not and have never been a "strict Constitutionalist"!!! (...thanks for the clarification here, drednm)

    I'm All Mixed Up!

Hmmmm...not sure about that, MissW. They both might have I guess. But I do understand that Ann used to always offer little Gwyneth Paltrow some Hostess cupcakes and Ho-Hos whenever she'd pop over to play with Ann's kids back in the day. (...and so there's THAT connection between Ann and Blythe here anyway, I suppose)

Speaking of which... How was it that Barry Fitzgerald was nominated for both Best Actor AND Best Supporting Actor for the very same role in the very same movie, and then winning for the latter? (...what, the catholic church had some special pull with the Academy membership or somethin'?!)

    MetropoLESS!

Oh, don't worry about THAT! (...word definitely got to us there was this one teacher if you ever got transferred over there to steer clear of Frank "Frog-Killer" Kowalski's class, alright)

    MetropoLESS!

Yeah, we students over at Gardena High had heard you guys over at Aviation High could be cruel like that. (...but it's good to now know this wasn't just a vicious rumor)

    MetropoLESS!

Close I suppose to Bette's now famous line in that movie, but no Sarge, that was radio announcer and voice over artist Casey Kasem's old radio show signature sign-off line. (...and why MY "signature" parenthetical addendum included his name)
  12. Ah! So THIS would also explain why you can barely see that signature chin dimple of his anymore too, huh. And whereas I once knew a guy who had NO chin dimple, but after HIS helicopter crash he ended up having one. (...funny how life works out sometimes, ain't it)
  13. Dargo

    MetropoLESS!

Uh-huh, but while you're doing all that Sarge, don't forget to also keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars. (...hmmm...ya know come to think of it, I do believe I once heard Metropolis was one of Casey Kasem's favorite movies too!)

Gotta say you've brought up a very good point here, Nip ol' boy. Yep, Burt's performance here is certainly one of the best I've ever watched anybody playing an American traitor, and could have indeed been one of the best of 1964. And of course, provided yet another cinematic opportunity for a military uniformed Kirk Douglas to ever so righteously tell off a superior officer in a film, and such as he did just seven years earlier to Adophe Menjou in Paths of Glory. Although of course in the later film, Kirk would do this in a little more, and uncharacteristically for him at least, subtle manner. (...ah but then again, perhaps playing an American traitor who's full of himself wasn't all that hard to pull off back then like it seemingly is today, huh...cinematically or not)

    Best Party Scene

Yeah well, be sure to keep your distance from Marcello Mastroianni when the cameras start rolling, Gordie. Nobody ever looked that good standing next to that guy by comparison, ya know. (...well, except of course for Sophia)

    Ann Sheridan / Sheridan Whiteside

Yeah! My Aunt Elizabeth did. And a wonderful old gal she was, I might add. Bless her soul. (...well, you didn't specifically say "actress" here, now did ya, TB?!)

    I'm All Mixed Up!

Anybody else here ever get these two confused a bit from time to time? Albert Dekker and Lionel Atwill (...I used to)

Ya have to wonder if Sellers hadn't sprained his ankle during production and thus had also played the Maj. Kong part as originally planned and instead of Pickens, if that might have put him over the top, vote-wise. Word was he had mastered the Texas accent quite well. He did every other accent in it very well anyway, and especially the midwestern American one he did for President Merkin Muffley. (...and which I noticed for many years many Brit actors had trouble doing without sounding more southern than midwestern)
  20. Yeah, probably. But then again, the Sarge here has so far failed to expand upon his own personal experiences in these regards he said HE had back in the day, remember?! (...amazing how some people will clam up soon after spilling the beans on themselves, isn't it)

    I'm All Mixed Up!

So, it seems a pic like this would be a more accurate avatar for ya then, eh Sarge?... (...er, I suppose I mean instead, "eh Beau"?)

    Actress Sondra Locke (1944-2018)

Yeah, but still a little younger than how I usually remember Henry Hull. Btw, did I ever tell you about attending high school with Butch Patrick? (...never mind...probably shouldn't sidetrack Miss Locke's thread any more here)
  23. Dargo

    Actress Sondra Locke (1944-2018)

Ah! Now I see it. I suppose because the pic of the guy looked more recent than from 1935, and almost like some rocker from the '50s, I couldn't quite place it. (...thanks Lorna, Det. Jim and Lawrence)
  24. Dargo

    Actress Sondra Locke (1944-2018)

Yeah, or at least somebody you wouldn't wanna tangle with in a dark alley, anyway.
  25. LOL And so yeah, sewhite, I wouldn't get..ahem..hooked on a feeling of doing that if I were you.
