It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955) I think all the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World films could be included in the "giant monsters" category.

Mystery Road (2013) and its sequel Goldstone (2016): two Australian films about sex trafficking. And in that vein, of course, the U.S. television show Law & Order: SVU. I'd call this "on the lighter side" except it is directed by Woody Allen: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* (*But Were Afraid to Ask) (1972).

Maybe I'll Come Home in the Spring: the title and Sally Field in the starring role makes the film sound like a comedy, but it was quite a surprise, as I recall. It's been a while since I've seen it, but I think I can still recommend it!

Maybe I'll Come Home in the Spring, 1971 television film starring Sally Field and Eleanor Parker. Some scenes show the very unglamorous necessity of scrounging other people's leftover food at outdoor restaurants when one decides to live a wanderer's life.

In National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989), Juliette Lewis's character watches It's a Wonderful Life. (I know it's not a TV show, but who has seen it more times in the theater than on TV these days?!) In Diner (1982), Keven Bacon gets all the answers right while watching College Bowl on TV.
