  3. https://thenextrecession.wordpress.com/2018/06/07/china-workshop-challenging-the-misconceptions/ China workshop: challenging the misconceptions The recent workshop on China organised by the China Workshop (poster and programme_05062018) in London asked all the questions, even if it did not resolve them. What are the reasons for China’s phenomenal growth in the last 40 years and can it last? What is the nature of the Chinese economy: is it capitalist or not? What explains under Xi the new emphasis on studying Marxism in China’s universities? Is China’s export and investment expansion abroad imperialist or not? How will the trade war between the US and China pan out? In the opening session, Dr Dic Lo, Reader in Economics at SOAS, London University and Zhu Andong, Vice Dean at the School of Marxism at Tsinghua University, Beijing (representing a delegation from various Chinese universities) were at pains to argue that China is misrepresented in the so-called West and not just through mainstream capitalist views but also from the left. All the talk from the left, said Lo, was about political repression, labour exploitation, inequality or Chinese ‘imperialism’. But then how to explain China’s phenomenal growth and success in taking over 850m people out of poverty (as defined by the World Bank) and reaching national output second only to the US. China doubles real living standards every 13 years. It now takes the US and Europe 50 years and Japan even longer. Is this just fake or illusory and if not, how can this ‘capitalist’ and ‘imperialist’ economy have bucked the trend, when the record of all other capitalist economies (advanced or ‘emerging’) can show no such success? “How can it be possible, in our times, for a late-developing nation to move up the world political-economic hierarchy to become imperialist? Can anyone on the left answer this question?” Dic Lo criticised the majority view of left political economists that China could be characterised as “neoliberal capitalist”, the so-called “Foxconn Model” of labour exploitation. This view was pioneered by Martin Hart-Landsberg and Paul Burkett, made most influential by David Harvey, most systematic by Minqi Li; and politically correct by Pun Ngai. But were they right? Zhu Andong also critiqued what he considered was this Western view. In contrast, far from a Marxist critique disappearing in China, there was growing official support for the study of Marxism in Chinese universities, both in special departments and even increasingly in economics departments, which up to recently had been dominated by mainstream neoclassical economics influenced by Western universities.
  4. https://www.rt.com/usa/429038-us-media-coup-venezuela/ If you’ve followed American media in recent times, you will have probably heard that meddling in affairs of foreign nations is a bad thing — but it seems that view changes dramatically when the US is the one doing the meddling. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was reelected in May in what Washington wrote-off as a “sham” election. In response, the Trump administration slapped new sanctions on the South American country and seemingly won’t be happy until Maduro and his socialist regime packs up and disappears. Confirming that it’s Washington’s way or the highway, a former US official who worked as assistant administrator for Latin America at the US Agency for International Development, under the Bush administration, has openly called for a military coup — and Foreign Policy magazine has obligingly published his thoughts.

https://apnews.com/d084d718ddda4fe087219825bad0fcbd Analysis: HUD plan would raise rents for poor by 20 percent CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Housing Secretary Ben Carson says his latest proposal to raise rents would mean a path toward self-sufficiency for millions of low-income households across the United States by pushing more people to find work. For Ebony Morris and her four small children, it could mean homelessness. Morris lives in Charleston, South Carolina, where most households receiving federal housing assistance would see their rent go up an average 26 percent, according to an analysis done by Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and provided exclusively to The Associated Press. But her increase would be nearly double that. Overall, the analysis shows that in the nation’s 100 largest metropolitan areas, low-income tenants — many of whom have jobs — would have to pay roughly 20 percent more each year for rent under the plan. That rent increase is about six times greater than the growth in average hourly earnings, putting the poorest workers at an increased risk of homelessnessbecause wages simply haven’t kept pace with housing expenses. “I saw public housing as an option to get on my feet, to pay 30 percent of my income and get myself out of debt and eventually become a homeowner,” said Morris, whose monthly rent would jump from $403 to $600. “But this would put us in a homeless state.”

https://www.rt.com/news/428974-nasa-privatization-split-components/ ISS might be 'split' into segments in just a few years as part of private business takeover The head of NASA says the International Space Station (ISS) might not exist in its current form in 2025 and instead be divided into components, some of which could be dumped completely. The plan is a part of a privatization bid. Newly-approved NASA chief Jim Bridenstine said that the days of the ISS being a unique platform of broad multilateral cooperation in space might be numbered. He claimed that NASA is currently exploring a “range of options,” one of which will see the ISS fractured. “Maybe it gets split into a number of different components. Some of it could be de-orbited,” Bridenstine, who was confirmed for the post in a narrow vote in April, said as cited by the New York Times. While the agency has not come to any particular conclusion on what to do with the ISS, its overhaul was “put on steroids” by US President Donald Trump’s ambitious budget proposal in February, he said. The proposal envisions ending direct budget funding for the ISS by 2025 and organizing its takeover by private companies, including SpaceX and Blue Origin. - The Trump administration’s plan to turn the ISS into a kind of a space lab for cutting-edge private companies has come under fire as being unrealistic. Even Trump’s Republican backers, like Senator Ted Cruz, who chairs the Senate Subcommittee on Science, Space and Competitiveness, made a case against privatization, calling the Office of Management and Budget “numbskulls” for trying to defund the ISS.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-44402742 South Carolina restaurant 'forced man to cook without pay' A restaurant manager in South Carolina has pleaded guilty to abusing and forcing an intellectually challenged employee to work without pay for years. Bobby Paul Edward, who is white, violently forced the victim, who is black, to cook for long hours, the US Department of Justice said. John Christopher Smith was made to work over 100 hours per week at the buffet and was beaten by Edwards. He said Edwards, 53, burned him with tongs and hit him with pots and pans. Edwards admitted to using "violence, threats, isolation and intimidation" to force Mr Smith to work, and did not allow him to see his family. On Tuesday he pleaded guilty to one count of forced labour. In a statement, officials added that he used "abusive language" and "racial epithets" against his employee, now aged 40.

Millan Hupp, Mr. Pruitt’s scheduler, and Sarah Greenwalt, a senior counsel to the administrator, have come under scrutiny in recent weeks in connection with Mr. Pruitt’s spending and ethics concerns. Before joining the agency, both Ms. Hupp and Ms. Greenwalt worked for Mr. Pruitt in Oklahoma, where he served as attorney general. Both aides later received substantial raises at the EPA, bypassing the usual White House procedures. Mr. Pruitt told Congress he neither knew about nor approved of the raises, and he told lawmakers he reversed the raises when he learned about them.

Israeli occupation forces killed another member of the Tamimi family in the occupied West Bank town of Nabi Saleh. The 21-year-old Ezz al-Din Tamimi was shot at close range Wednesday during an early morning raid. Village residents told Middle East Eye (MEE) that Israeli soldiers had previously threatened to kill the young man. "They came many times to his house, they called his family, they threatened him and told them: ‘We will kill him like we killed Ahmed Jarrar,' Bilal Tamimi told MEE.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-06-07/france-said-to-warn-trump-that-it-will-not-sign-a-g-7-statement France Warns Trump It Won’t Sign a G-7 Statement France has joined Germany in warning President Donald Trump that it won’t sign a joint statement of the Group of 7 at the summit in Quebec this week without major concessions from the U.S., a French official in the president’s office said. President Emmanuel Macron has signaled that progress on tariffs, Iran nuclear agreement and Paris climate accord must be made before he’ll be willing to sign a joint statement, the official told reporters Wednesday in Ottawa. The French president spent the day meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other Canadian officials ahead of the June 8-9 summit in La Malbaie, Quebec. The official requested anonymity in keeping with rules of the French president’s office. Macron has concluded that the other members of the G7 -- the U.K., Germany, Japan, France, Italy and Canada -- must stand up to the U.S. over Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum from the European Union, Canada and Mexico as well as other issues.

https://morningstaronline.co.uk/article/appeals-court-rules-against-decision-allowing-councils-to-boycott-israeli-goods Appeals court rules against decision allowing councils to boycott Israeli goods Palestine Solidarity Campaign says it will consider escalating the case to the Supreme Court PALESTINIANS’ rights activists suffered a legal setback today when the Court of Appeal overturned a ruling that local councils’ ethical boycott of Israeli goods was legal. The Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), which brought the case, said it was “incredibly disappointed” by the decision, but it would consider escalating the case to the Supreme Court. Last June, the High Court upheld the PSC argument that local government pension scheme guidelines, which said local authorities “should not pursue policies that are contrary to UK foreign policy or UK defence policy,” were unlawful in preventing the use of boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS). Then minister for communities and local government Sajid Javid ploughed ahead with the guidelines despite 98 per cent of respondents to a prior public consultation saying they thought it was wrong to invest in companies complicit in human rights abuses.

That looks like the same unsubstantiated whining we see all the time on here (TCM doesn't play enough movies, they play too many new/ foreign/ whatever movies). I wouldn't worry about it. The commercials are usually kept to a minimum.

British forces did set fire to the presidential residence during the War of 1812 with the US. But Canada did not exist at the time - it was made up of British colonies. "Didn't you guys burn down the White House?" Mr Trump reportedly asked in a call with Mr Trudeau over new tariffs. It is not clear if the comment was intended as a joke, but CNN report that it followed an exchange in which Mr Trudeau asked how the US could justify the tariffs as a "national security" issue.

http://www.businessinsider.com/mick-mulvaney-cfpb-director-fires-agencys-advisory-board-after-criticism-2018-6 Trump-appointed consumer watchdog director just fired the agency's entire advisory board after criticism of his leadership Mick Mulvaney, the interim head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, has disbanded the Consumer Advisory Board, the Community Bank Advisory Council, and the Credit Union Advisory Council, in order to save costs. The decision drew sharp criticism from board members, who said the change would shut out those who are familiar with the problems faced by ordinary Americans. The CFPB reportedly plans to reconvene the boards with fewer members in the fall, and increase outreach to the public with events. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Mick Mulvaney, the interim head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, has disbanded three boards whose members include consumer advocacy groups and which advise on policy at the financial watchdog, board members said on Wednesday. The decision to dismantle the boards was communicated to members via an email and conference call on Wednesday, the members said. It drew sharp criticism from board members, who said the change would shut out those who are familiar with the problems faced by ordinary Americans.

Speaking of which, I wonder if TCM has ever played the French version of the movie that was produced alongside the English one (similar to the Spanish and English Draculas also made at the time.) If they haven't, it would make a great TCM Import as I'm very interested in seeing it. There's only a few clips on YouTube though.
