    Trafic (1971). Jacques Tati.

Trafic is probably my favorite of his films. Funny gag after gag with another scathing criticism of technology. My favorite of his short films is probably School for Postmen. I like the bell gag the best. Was funny to see it reused in Jour de Fete. Evening Class was very crude and with dull sets.
  4. More nonsense from Ocasio Cortez and her ilk courtesy of garbage can "Vox." In a recent Instagram live stream from her kitchen, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) raised a taboo dimension of climate change few politicians would dare to touch. “Basically, there’s a scientific consensus that the lives of children are going to be very difficult. And it does lead, I think, young people to have a legitimate question: Is it okay to still have children?” she said. Hopefully this means donkey face won't procreate. :crosses fingers:

BUSINESS NEWS The Spirit Level Delusion The Spirit Level by Wilkinson and Pickett made a big splash a decade ago by showing many correlations between inequality and various problems. In a recent talk, Pickett summarized the thesis of the book with the graph at right. Even at the time, however, there were peculiarities in the data–for example, some countries were dropped without explanation and data with different definitions were spliced together–as pointed out by Christopher Snowdon in the Spirit Level Delusion. Adding in a few more countries, for example, made many of the correlations disappear. Snowdon now has a nice post with another test. Suppose we run the same or similar regressions using today’s data? If the relationships are robust we ought to see the same correlations or even stronger correlations given the increase in inequality. Here, for example, is a key graph from The Spirit Level on inequality and life-expectancy. If, however, we use the same countries but today’s most up-to-date figures on inequality and life-expectancy we find no correlation. If we add the four countries that are unequivocally richer than Portugal and were excluded from The Spirit Level for no good reason (South Korea, Hong Kong, Slovenia and the Czech Republic (now known as Czechia)), there is a statistically significant association with inequality but it is in the opposite direction to that predicted by The Spirit Level hypothesis, with greater inequality correlating with longer life expectancy (r2=0.145, R=0.385, p-value=0.0495). After examining a variety of data. Snowdon summarizes: It’s certainly possible that inequality has a causal effect on various issues (both positive and negative) but it seems that such effects are small and subtle enough to require much more than cross-sectional country-level data to uncover.

    2020 Election

Article from The Atlantic about how the popular perception of liberals being weak on immigration helped power the right wing and how Democrats can change that perception. Includes quotes from Hillary Clinton and Obama on immigration.

    What are you reading

There are many decent audiobooks available on YouTube. I am currently making my way through this one. Decent translation but the pic used in the video isn't actually Stirner but rather some random guy. There are no pictures of Stirner.

    That's a nice car!

I think the image may not load properly on his computer or something. It looks fine to me though. Also yes, that car is very nice. Very funny scene with Tati trying to calm her and tell her that her dog isn't dead but only making it worse and worse.

    Narcissistic Blowhards

I listened to this one played on the local (I think it was ?) radio with my dad as a kid and really enjoyed it. One of my favorite exchanges from the show was when they were in their swimsuits and about to go swimming (I forget the exact episode)- Boynton: "Oh, Ms. Brooks. I never knew you had a mole there." Ms Brooks: "Yeah, I've had one on my elbow quite a long time."
  18. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), a progressive firebrand currently the focus of controversy over comments she made about Israel, appeared to rebuke former President Obama in a new interview, comparing him to President Trump, only "more polished." Omar slammed Obama’s “hope and change” message as more smoke and mirrors than anything concrete, saying, like Trump, his immigration policies involved detaining children at the southern border and he made heavy use of lethal drone strikes overseas. “We can’t be only upset with Trump. … His policies are bad, but many of the people who came before him also had really bad policies. They just were more polished than he was,” Omar told Politico. “And that’s not what we should be looking for anymore. We don’t want anybody to get away with murder because they are polished. We want to recognize the actual policies that are behind the pretty face and the smile.” In a tweet Friday tweet, however, Omar said that her remarks had been "distorted" and that she is definitely a "fan" of Obama's. Omar, a freshman lawmaker, has been beset by controversy over statements she made regarding Israel and pro-Israel groups that many interpreted as anti-Semitic. A House resolution in response to her comments divided the Democratic caucus, with some members seeking to call her out by name while others successfully pushed for language condemning a wide range of discrimination. The resolution, passed Thursday, did not name Omar. It made several mentions of anti-Semitism, but also rebuked other forms of hate and prejudice, such as Islamophobia.
