The screenplays (adapted from literary works) for both films were written by Eric Roth. That is, in itself, not an indictment of one film or the other, or that both are somehow joined at the hip. Each film is about the long life of a man whose particular physical circumstances leads to his witnessing epochal events in history and experiencing a wide range of experiences, but once you get past that, the two movies are quite different from each other.
