Wow! Did I hit a nerve? Are you Jeff Bridges relative or something? Calm down there! Alright, Bridges has guts!!!! Alright, Coen Brothers wanted to do a remake!!!!!!!!!! You cannot tell me that I would be the only person who would go see the movie and compare Bridge's portrayal to Wayne's.

I saw it, and liked it quite a bit. As Kinoma says, it was not a remake, but the Coen's version, made directly from the book. Most of the dialog came from the book. Bridges said he wondered why the Coens would do a 'remake,' and they told him they were making the book, and gave it to him to read. He read the book, and said it was a Coen bros. script, so he understood, and did it. All the acting is good, and the girl who plays Mattie is very good.

The Coen bros liked the novel and wanted to do a movie based on the novel so they needed to hire someone to play that part right????

So what was any actor asked to play the part going to do? 'well, I would like to do the role, but,,, well it would be ludicrous for me to take a part made famous by another actor like Wayne,,,'.

Come on that POV is what is ludicrous.

Actor play roles they don't own them, and it takes guts to do a role that was done well by an actor of a previous generation. If one is going to see a movie with that much built in bias I recommend they just save their money and skip it.

Yes Jeff Bridges mumbled during the film and at times was a bit hard to understand. This however was obviously an artistic choice. He was playing a drunk and drunks are also often hard to understand. He did a very good job portraying this on screen.

Hailee Steinfeld & Matt Damon were miles better than Kim Darby and Glen Campbell.

The original was an entertaining film but I thought the remake was much better. I watched them back to back as well. As for the ending of the new film it is supposedly closer to the novel ending.

The Coen Brothers were not trying to remake the John Wayne film. They wanted to make their own adaption of the novel they enjoyed.

I also saw the King's Speech this weekend enjoyable film and I will also be rooting for Colin Firth to take home the Best Actor Oscar. But as a film I actually enjoyed True Grit more.

Jeff Bridges mumbled?? You mean like he did in his "award winning" performance for Crazy Heart
Colin Firth should have won for A Single Man. So the fact that Bridges is reprising a role made famous by the incomparable John Wayne is ludicrous. I'll go see the movie just in case I can prove myself wrong. But I'm more anxious to see Colin Firth in The King's Speech

The original was on TCM on Wednesday and I watched it, although I had seen it a couple of times before. On Thursday I went to see the new one at my local theater. Perhaps it's unfair because the original was still so fresh in my mind, but I thought that the remake was not quite as good. I won't spoil it for anyone, but I thought that Jeff Bridges mumbled his way through the movie. I thought Matt Damon looked like an Australian soldier in "Gallipoli", or some similar movie. They did get a young girl to play Maddie, and though she did a good job, I thought that she spoke a little too fast. The promos list Josh Brolin with the third billing, but his on screen time is rather minimal. The ending is a little different, too. You'll have to see it to make up your own mind, but my opinion is that this story did not need a remake.

If it's nominated for best picture, I will see it. I've seen every best picture nominee after Chocolat.

although we don't see many new movies, I'll give it a go just because the Coen Bros. have seldom disappointed. Love their stuff !

I expect to this week if my Mom's health scare turns out to be minor. It sounds like a great way to do New Year's Eve.

Wayne's has only ONE role in the first version of True Grit.

Most movies have more than one role or one actor.

Thus I just don't understand the POV of; since I loved this actor in THAT role, I will not see a remake where there are other actors.

There might be many valid reasons NOT to see a remake but I don't see this as being one.

This post probably could've gone on the John Wayne thread that is currently active. Plus, if you do a search by TRUE GRIT, you will find several places/posts where people are talking about it.

I am going because I am intrigued about remakes and how modern filmmakers approach them. But in the long run, I probably see 1 movie at the theater a year. I'm sick of the swears, sex, and gore of modern films.
