I wonder if they patterned him after Ricardo?

Cortez reminds me so much of Pacino's character in The Godfather. I mean the look.

I ran out of videotape so I missed the end of the movie. The last thing I saw, was Laura (Karen Morley) shows up at Nick's (Cortez) house...and then Polekai shows up!

* Does Laura ever get Nick?

* Does Polekai demand a paternity test?

* Does Nick do the right thing by EV'RYbody...or does he remain the all-time heel of heels? And can you really be mad at him when it's Laura who's blinded by love, I mean obsession?

* Does Polekai wake up smell the coffee and chuck the whole lot o' them rats?

A Maven wants to know. She really does.

Your wish is my command!

MAJOR FLESH-ly SPOILERS!!!

Basically this is what happened after Polakai showed up on Nickey's doorstep:

Nickey promised Polakai that he'd get Laura back for him.

But Laura doesn't want to go back. She's "done enough to that man already".

Nickey decides to "persuade" Laura and "draws her a map".

Laura goes back to Polakai and convinces him to wrestle Nickey's way: crooked.

Polakai agrees, starts hitting the sauce (instead of Laura). Laura realizes she "likes, really likes" Polakai.

Polakai gets toasted right before a big match he's supposed to throw. Nickey gets wind of it and decides to try the same "persuasion" and map drawing on Polakai, who's too drunk to notice.

Then Nickey draws another map for Laura. Polakai notices. Nickey's map drawing days are cut short.

Polakai goes into the match a little hungover but wins and becomes champion...and gets arrested for murder.

Laura visits Polakai in prison and there is a hint that the authorities may regard Polakai's murder as a simple case of vermin extermination and happily ever after, Polakai says "Liebschen...." (and we presume he will join AA).

Just took a quick spin around this thread (a very quick one at that) but I see I almost missed out on a monumental occasion! :-)

Happy 11K Miss Maven... This calls for a celebration! Parfait anyone??

Hold on Vi...Star. You're being unfair to my friend...acquaintance, Leslie.
She's a victim of circumstance. Hammond led her on. She was tried in
A court of her imperialistic peers and was found Not Giuilty.

Crikey... The girl knows how to crochet! Doesn't skill count for anything
These days??? How was she too know the gun was loaded. And how
tall IS Victor Sen Young, anyway??

Besides, l need Leslie back to finish the shawl she was making for me!

Mrs. Hammond: I don't care about Leslie; you gave her what she deserved. I want that white lace mantilla she wore when she met you. You were right, it was too good for her to wear. I always hoped to pair it with the Shenendoah wedding gown when my turn came. I ended up settling for white dotted swiss with silk trim, flowers on dress and my hair, and shoes all in blue. The flowers lasted longer than we did. Hope you and son of Charlie Chan didn't get too much prision time.

Ohhhhhhhhh, hello Mrs. Hammond. Leslie -is- was a friend of mine. We often are mistaken for each other. But she is...uhm....not me. It was shameful what she did with yourhusband. I tried to advise her against it, but she told me to mind my business and just keep posting my movie "nonsense." So I am.

Leslie won't even try to beg your forgiveness even though she's as sorry as hell for all the pain and suffering you must've gone through. But she said to tell you that your husband was a dawwwwg any- how and you were well-rid of him. She did you a favor of pumping him full of lead.

Cobra's eyes? I always described them as black as two moonlit pools.

Thanxx for the congrats. I appreciate it. I haven't seen Leslie in ages...in eons. You don't know anything about where she might be...do you Mrs. Hammond??

HA!! He was a cutie pie, wasn't he. I kind of think of him as the George Hamilton of the 1940's. There still wasn't something strongly masculine about him, but he was awful awful cute.

"I just like seeing her Amazonian, adult looks in this world of skinny, 14 year old waifs who pass for stars nowadays."

Amazonian, why you've found the perfect perfect word for her. Her athletic look is mighty "healthy." Her smile lights up the room. I always thought she was one of the very pretty ones from the 1940's. But there's still something about Frances Gifford I can't get outta my mind...

Jose O'Rourke, in Neptune's Daughter is soooo suave...This was the film screened by the pool at TCM Festival 2010....Betty Garrett and Esther Williams were interviewed by Ben Mankiewicz and the Aqualillies performed their synchronized swimming routine..."

I did my WHOLE FACE a disservice, when I cut off my nose to spite it, when I didn't go to TCM's Film Fest last year. I love Esther Williams, and you guys were so lucky to have that experience. As for Montalban...oh, baby don't hold out!!! He was a gorgeous-looking man. And that's M-A-N!!! (All CAPS and underlined!) PS I remembered what you said about Esther Williams looking like your Mom.

Aaaaaah, just what I wanted...to be remembered throughout eternity WITHOUT being a MUMMY!! Thanx! Well, I can only hope and wish and pray to post like you when I grow up. What do I mean? Why this:

"Let me be pretentious and submit that Gypo to me is very existential as a character. He stumbles about blindly through the fog, plagued by an inability to understand himself, much less the world around him. He's a stranger in a strange land."

Well-written.

Wow, Goddess, thank you so much for shedding light on THE INFORMER and taking my queries seriously! (since you're the Ford expert on this board)

One thing that strikes me about Gypo through Vic's performance and Pappy's direction, is how excruciatingly human Gypo is. Let me be pretentious and submit that Gypo to me is very existential as a character. He stumbles about blindly through the fog, plagued by an inability to understand himself, much less the world around him. He's a stranger in a strange land. The British and the Irish don't trust him; Gypo's in a kind of limbo, and can't control the social forces that have engulfed him in poverty. "There is no harm in him", says Katie, but there is an element of dark cunning in Gypo's actions that don't entirely make him sympathetic, and yet we can't really condemn Gypo as either a brute or a fool.

Oh my dear Bronxie, I have been lauding this film for decades and noone has ever heard of it

I saw it at a film festival in 1982 and fell in love with Millands performance...there is a little clip

because in the end he shows regret for his exsistance....Spot On.. VI

I'd been dying to see ALIAS NICK BEAL for ages, so jumped at the chance when I found out the whole movie was on YouTube. The sound's a bit low and the print is just so-so, but I'm very glad I got to experience Ray as, well, you know. I was surprised when Nick told Mitchell "You're lucky, luckier than I was...." Almost makes you feel sorry for Beal, doesn't it, lol?
