It's probably the most entertaining of all the biblical epics- DeMille knew how to put on a show and there is something for everyone here- sex, action, and the Voice of God. A lot more fun than "Ben Hur"

I used to watch this every Easter with my family while growing up. It's a Sunday school story come to life! I think that it is an all-time great epic film. It had a cast of thousands. It's always colorful and entertaining to watch. It's has it's thrilling moments ( even now the parting of the Red Sea is exciting to watch). It's has high drama. There's some comedy thanks to Anne Baxter and Edward G. Robinson's sometimes campy performances. And with Yul, Charlton Heston, and John Derek ( all at the height of thier male hunkness) appearing bare-chested during much of the film. And the beautiful Debra Paget, it was even quite sexy. For a 50's Hollywood epic, what's not to love?

Sure, it can; for better or worse, it just can't get more DeMillean.

I can't imagine watching the movie as a kid and what I'd feel when that sequence came up. Probably would have scared me half to death.

I loved this movie as a kid too, but the Angel of Death killing all the first borns scared me to death, possibly because I am a first born and the daughter of two first borns...don't know if I could appreciate it as an adult, though.

Epic. It has all the elements: Large cast, grand scenes and spectacular visuals and visual effects, great soundtrack, compelling characters in a historical backdrop and a fine story. It is something I always make an effort to watch every Easter. The Ten Commandments and Ben Hur.

It's Cecil B DeMille, for pete's sake. The man does epics!

Epic! Epic! Epic!...I still get chills down my back when Moses raises his staff and proclaims...behold his mighty hand and the Red Sea splits...

One of the greatest movies ever made...

I say Epic... as in Epic fun to watch. And here is why (for me): John Derek, Debra Paget, Vincent Price, Judith Anderson, John Carradine, the perfection that is Yvonne DeCarlo, Eddie G., Heston, and Yul Brynner and Anne Baxter float between loving and mostly hating each other. A wild ride. I loved this movie as a child when i could never sit through most any movie.

I say overblown. Did DeMille EVER show real intimacy between any of his characters? I'm trying to think of an instance, but nothing's coming to mind. It was all about events and environments with him, along with his penchant for "spectacle". Not that I don't love me some spectacle. Your comment about this ending Anne Baxter's career made me think of the drag queens in "To Wong Foo" helping the young girl prep for her date. They showed the video with the scene of Anne strewing flowers in front of Moses' procession from the balcony, making her repeat after them: "This is Miss Anne Baxter and these are the moves." An immortality of sorts, right? The thing I always look for in his movies is how he punches up dialogue from anonymous members of a crowd scene to get salient points across to the audience. Subtle. Don't get me wrong. I'm happy as a clam watching his movies, but to call them art is a stretch I'm not willing to make.

"Is."

Overblown? Yes, in parts. But can be great fun and, most of the time, great movie making. Heston is sometimes a little stilted but I guess that is to be authoritative. You must be that if you get to collect the Commandments.

Yes, that is the question. But why $64,000?? And what do commandments go for these days... that is, if DeMille were to re-make the film.
