THE SINGLE STANDARD (1929) is being shown on TCM for the first time in several years Sunday evening. It is my favorite Greta Garbo Silent. You don't want to miss it.

I was rather anxious to hear Robert Osborne and Drew Barrymore's take before and after the broadcast this evening. I wonder if Drew has seen any of Great Grandmother Dolores Costello's Silent films at all? I'm taking it for granted that she has seen something of John and Lionel Barrymore's Silents. Maybe DON JUAN perhaps? And yes, Drew bares a remarkable resemblance to Dolores in some ways. So I would hope she has seen a little bit of something.

As it turned out, both Drew and for that matter Robert Osborne's comments were only moderately interesting and insightful. I was hoping for more. They mentioned thet Janet Gaynor won the Academy Award as Best actress for SUNRISE, and two other films. Unfortunately, they did not mention the titles of those two other films. Would have been nice in case people who were seeing SUNRISE for the first time might have wanted to check out Frank Borzage's 7TH HEAVEN and STREET ANGEL afterward. Apparently, they didn't give that much thought. I might be in the minority, but personally I like both 7TH HEAVEN and STREET ANGEL better than SUNRISE.

I've seen SUNRISE 25 or 30 times. I wasn't expected to watch much of it tonight ended up seeing the whole thing.

Not sure if anything what HALLELUJAH has to do with SUNRISE? They might have debuted Murnau's Masterpiece FAUST (1926) right afterward instead. That would have made for a fine double bill.

Hi pixiechick,

"Sunrise" has to be in my top-3 favorite silent films. I just adore it. The cinematography is wonderful, and the acting is terrific. Though Sunrise is a silent, it still involves you emotionally. It doesn't need spoken dialogue to get its point across. Thank you for starting a thread on this great movie!

If you are intereted in seeing another silent movie, I recommend Dreyer's "The Passion of Joan of Arc".

I just watched my first black and white silent movie, "Sunrise", and it was a beautiful film. I think I've found a whole new genre of films to love. It was amazing! I'm so glad I turned on TCM or I would have missed such a wonderful experience.
