Can't believe I'm saying this, but compared to now, I do miss him. I disagree with him on just about everything in life, including a lot of movie opinions (opinions mind you, he brought a lot knowledge and factual information to "The Essentials" also, which is a different thing). At least I didn't have to listen to him drivel on about how the movie "just makes me feel so joyful" ugh. I liked the give-and-take of his opinions with Mr Osborne, as he could usually back them up with pertinent information.

Or, mz, it could mean it's time to update the furniture on the set -- or to change the camera angle (esp. at the end). Maybe that chair doesn't offer him enough support. Maybe moving the camera so AB doesn't have to turn his body?

Ok, dp ... that was funny. Ideal description of Mr. Baldwin. He's not the most relaxed person in the world. ;)

Well, I wouldn't say that I "miss" him, per se. I found him uncomfortable to watch. Jacket too tight? Hard to turn his neck?

I miss Baldwin. Baldwin came off as quick witted and really into movies, and without pretention. Currently the co-host can lay claim to one of those three qualities-- being really into movies. And that's something.

Still, I really miss Alec Baldwin. A smartass in the best possible way. As opposed to...

I dont care for her at all, but it doesnt stop me from watching if I'm in the mood for the movie. But since her picks are mostly stuff TCM shows constantly, I rarely watch. Why do we need this show again????

Good Heavens NO-the repore between Alec and Robert was intelligent. Drew is ruining the Essentials- I either DVR so I can eliminate her or mute her out.

That's the other thing about Baldwin. I like the selections for the Essentials. I think Drew is doing quite well, but I miss Alec too.

I wouldn't go as far as you, but I'm no big fan of Drew either.

I find Ms. Barrymore to be the very antithesis of TCM's programming mission. Her knowledge of classic cinema is limited at best. Additionally, the is virtually no chemistry between her and Robert.
The entire segment is very uncomfortable to watch.

Thanks for your thoughtful responses, chamelon and helenbaby. I'm glad I'm not alone in missing Alec, but I'm glad to find out it was his decision.

I'm hoping Drew can grow into the role as co host. She has some big shoes to fill for sure, but as I've mentioned before, she also has a great film heritage that just might be dormant and kick in later. She has a good mentor with Mr. Osborne.

chameleon wrote:You're not alone! I agree w/some of the other posters that Alec Baldwin as co-host with sometimes differing opinions from Robert Osborne's lent interest to the discussions. While Drew has enthusiasm, she's jumped into the water and seems to be in over her head at this stage. IMHO Alec was a better fit for this spot.

I wonder why he actually left and if it was his idea. (:={

Baldwin talked about this on Letterman a few weeks ago and it was definitely his decision. Osborne also addressed it on the cruise and I got the impression it was a friendly parting of the ways.
