I'm glad you mentioned Eileen Heckart. People have won supporting Oscars with very brief screen time, e.g., Beatrice Straight for NETWORK. Heckart was really fantastic, for my money the best drunken performance ever.

I paraphrase this from distant memory:

During one of the 31 Days of Oscar broadcasts a few years (three? four?) ago, he introduced Written on the Wind and ended with what seemed like a definite diss of Dorothy Malone saying (something akin to): "and here, containing an Oscar-winning performance from Dorothy Malone, a call by the Academy that had some of us cheering, and some of us scratching our heads in wonderment for years after, is Written on the Wind."

Um, "Meow!" right? 'Specially since she's still alive and it's my understanding she was not invited to attend the "Oscar Family Album" portion of the 1998 show by oversight.

I also have to throw in that, silly as Written on the Wind is, she actually is fantastic in it. It's a gusty performance, and sometimes a gutsy performance that doesn't entirely come off is much more inn-teresting than a successful, but tame one. Besides, Mercedes Macambridge was so slong for the ride with Giant, Mildred Dunnock is fine in the tedious Baby Doll, but it's not an Oscar role, Patty Macormack was out of her league and Eileen Heckart- who was sensational in her brief screen time in The Bad Seed was likely seen as lucky to be in the running (although she could've/should've gotten it for Somebody Up There Likes Me from the same year )

That's as close as I can recall to anything Os has ever said that was less than glowing.

Where does Robert Osborne come to Robert Q. Lewis? Game show host and panelist Lewis has been dead for years, and when did he ever review films?

I agree. It was definitely the most explicit (why I guess TCM never shows it in primetime)........

To me, FRENZY was the best post-PSYCHO Hitchcock film.

Yes, but how do you know that?

I've never seen RO being other than effusive about even the most banal movies.

Did he ever use the word despised much less the word +disliked+?

Maybe you're thinking of Robert Q. Lewis? Him I could see actually having an opinion about something. Or Oscar Levant! Maybe it was ole Oscar?

Frenzy was not on the Essentials. I was just trying to think of films RO truly disliked and that was one of them. Same with The Black Hole.

WHEN was Frenzy on The Essentials?? Sorry I missed that. Was it widescreen? Whenever TCM shows it, it's late at night in pan and scan........

ROFL, Robert must have read my past post! (his honesty in saying the movie we about to see stinks). :^0

"The Black Hole" is a bad movie but did got a kick out of that robot burning in hell. Maybe those torture droids in "Star Wars - Return of the Jedi" might join it. :p

I find that surprising he disliked Frenzy because at the time most critics raved about the film, calling it a return to the Master's classic style.

Personally...I happen to like The Black Hole (even though it's basically 20,000 Leagues Under The Seas set in deep space). Its' also one of those films that I find even more impressive on the big screen than on television (I got to see it in its original theatrical run).

Did RO say he despised Frenzy? Funny, I can't see him using that word.

I too hated Frenzy for its misogynism, but given that it came from the women-hating Hitch, I'm not surprised.

But did RO really say he despised it? Kudos to him for that.

I know that he did not think much of Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) or Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) as part of the Essentials, and he truly despised The Black Hole (1979) and Frenzy (1972), but have there been any other films that his dislike for them has been obvious?
