I guess I need stronger glasses t make sure that I see everything listed.

Did you notice that at least one day this week that some shorts were first listed in the weekly schedule on the day they were aired? Also, this morning's half-hour short Crisis in Morality (5am ET) had the genre "TCM Presents". Whose brilliant idea was that?

Actually, that was not an unlisted short. It appeared on the Thursday schedule early in the day, along with the other two shorts that were shown during the Mack Sennett evening marathon: THE HARD GUY and WILD AND WOOLEY.

By the way, as I pointed out elsewhere, did you notice the link between the short THE FATAL GLASS OF BEER and the BELIEVE IT OR NOT short that followed it? I don't know if it was intentional and the result of clever programming, but the Ripley short featured a guy who played the piano with his mittens on...and if you know the Fields short, well, you'll get the connection!

Unlisted shorts on TCM, Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012:

At about 9:20 P.M. (eastern) -
Pete Smith "Goofy Movies No. 7" (1934) - MGM.
At about 10:50 P.M. -
"Goofy Movies No. 10" (1934) - MGM

Edited by: musicalnovelty on Sep 13, 2012 10:56 PM to say that these shorts (along with a couple of others shown earlier today) do appear to be listed in the weekly schedule but not in the daily schedule.
I guess this proves that we still need to check more than one schedule to be sure we catch all the shorts on TCM.

Good night, David

I got it too!
But being just a kid back when they were on, of course it was my parents who'd be watching the news, not my brothers and me who'd be watching cartoons or other stuff for the kids. But Chet and David somehow did make an impression so I did get the reference made here.

By the way, I had to be out Sunday night (at a film event, naturally!) so had to miss the unlisted short that would have been on TCM after the movie THE BOY AND THE PIRATES. Does anyone know what it was? Someone asked on another forum and called it a Warners Foreign Legion short (obviously they must have missed the title), so I can make a few guesses as to what it may have been, but I'm hoping that some of our regular shorts watchers on this forum got to see it and can report what it was.

It was Sheik to Sheik (1936) with Georges Metaxa and Johnnie Berkes -- yes, I know, a two-reeler:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0756341/

It's included as an extra on the Shall We Dance dvd.

I think the programmers should include some James A. Fitzpatricks' Traveltalks to fill the time gaps which seem to be cropping up. There's quite a few I've never seen aired so maybe we can look forward to those.

Good night, David

Good night, Chet.

My goodness! I wonder how many people will have no idea what you're talking about with that Chet reference.

In any case, after much anticipation, I must say that the unannounced shorts represent quite a missed opportunity for the TCM shorts programmer(s). Slots that can accommodate 2-reelers don't pop up all that often, and they should be taken advantage of when they do. And the stuff they chose to play had all played relatively recently and/or are available on dvd. And that's a shame. There are plenty of Van Dine mysteries left that haven't seen the light of day on TCM in years, if ever, or great Vitaphone musical/comedies that are begging to be screened after not having been shown in ages. That's just my two cents, anyway.

The Pete Smith short, Gettin' Glamour (1946) ran unscheduled at 3:40 AM EDT. Nothing else of consequence followed, even though there remained an additional 12 minutes before the next film.

Mickey,

Thanks for letting me know. Even though I apparently did catch the short in a recording on July 1, I might consider buying the DVD as well.

I caught the end of that. I didn't tune to TCM until I was studying the schedule and saw the huge gap between Night and the City and The Reckless Moment. It was almost over by the time I tuned in, Wish I'd been able to see all of it.

That really is a fun short. I'm not into golf at all but do enjoy that short very much. The stars, the color, the background music...it's just a fun short!

TCM ran it for the first time just two weeks ago, on Sunday, July 1, so I'm sure we can expect it to be on again.
I hope you'll be able to see it then.

Looks like I caught it when I recorded some movies on July 1! Thanks for letting me know. I will go back and look at what I recorded on July 1.

I have only played golf a few times as a beginner a long time ago, and I found it really relaxing. For some reason, I enjoy watching it even though I don't play it. (A lot of people say golf is fun to play, but boring to watch, but I appear to be different.) I liked the short for the same reasons you mentioned--the stars, the color, the background music.

For some reason, I see colors more darkly than they really are. I'm planning to ask my ophthalmologist about this at my next appointment, although it's apparently a problem I've had all my life. I just discovered this past year that people I thought had black hair really have dark brown hair, some women who claimed to be blondes I thought had light brown hair, etc. There is a painting of an uncle that I always thought, since childhood, that showed him having black hair, only to find out from my aunt recently that the hair in the painting is brown. This might explain why I have so much trouble with modern action films where everything is so dark I cannot see what is going on. All this is to say I love movies with rich, bright color, and this is one of the reasons I liked this short.

But I also loved hearing the stars talk as they were preparing to make their shots (is that the correct term?), the atmosphere---everything.

Robbie
