helloo, ro!

in a way, i think Mann likes to use the west the way Shakespeare used his settings (usually the court) for drama, both psychological kind and especially to explore the conflicts between family members. several of his movies are about siblings or parent-child relationships gone bad. winchester '73 is about siblings, man of the west features a surrogate father-son relationship between Cooper and Lee J. Cobb, and of course, the furies is the ultimate example. then there's God's Little Acre, not a favorite of mine but Mr Grimes likes it..

Hello there, Miss G! I agree that this one has a lot more than just the standard "shoot-em up' style cowboy themes. It really is a different sort of western. It has taken me a while to get any sort of good "knowledge" for Mann films.. and I know I am way behind most here.. but I think he did lean more toward the "different'.. or maybe less common path for spinning a western tale.*** At the very least, I can say t was a surprise to see the twists and turns for this story. That gun surely got around (it was almost like "Winchester.. the "73 World Tour" ha.) But I liked how each "episode" of the story played into the "bigger" story all at the same time. Very different sort of way to play things out.***And I can see how some things were not (as you mention) "black and white" There were some "gray (I mean GREY) themes (and characters) mixed into the story for sure. And yet in a way.. some not so gray too (because there is a pretty clear line between who is right and who is wrong.. at least as for who the main two rivals are in the story) But yes, it does offer a a pretty good chance to maybe view some of the gray as well. No WONDER the Grey Dude has always spoken so highly of it. :D ***

howdy, Ro!
I'm glad you gave Winchester '73 a shot (ha) and liked it! I like it more now than to begin with. It's a great start to Stewart's western career (if you don't count 'Destry') and I think the movie has a lot more to offer when you pay attention...other than just a "shoot 'em up". It's Anthony Mann so that's what we expect now. I think there all kinds of contrasts set up between types of people and not all of it is "black and white".

I am sure the list could go on and on. It really is a testament to their acting skill I am sure that they are so easily known for playint roles where they are so well hated on screen that way. (and of course by that I mean how well LOVED they are for being so easy to hate) ha.

You are right, Rohanaka, most of these "bad guys" were the opposite off the scree. Dan Duryea was a Scoutmaster for his sons' troop, and I've read nothing but good about McIntire and Elam. We know about Marvin's drinking and female problems but he's buried at Arlington for being a WWII hero so you can't write him off. This all proves how good an actor they all were.

Hey there Mr. Movieman.. I bet Dan D is like a host of other movie "creepy guys" ha. (thinking now of only a few besides Dan.. maybe Jack Elam.. John McIntire.. Lee Marvin.. Rod Steiger (Jackie.. that one was for you.. ha) There are more I could list, I am sure.. and I know next to nothing about any of them other than the movies I see them in.. so I bet they were basically just downright decent guys in REAL life.. ha.(most of them, anyway.. ha) But OH me.. everytime I see them, I get the heebie jeebies just thinking about how SLIMY they could be. ha. Good golly, they just ought not to be SO good at being so rotten. :D

I was watching a commentary for an episode of "Combat" recently where Duryea's son appeared in the show. (Dan had been in one just before.) The director, Georg Fennady, spoke of what a lovely man Duryea was.and how good he was to work with. He was not at all like the characters we see him play in movies. (Yes, he was a first class twit in his episode.)

I thought you'd be pleased.. ha. But I have to confess.. I ALMOST turned this when I saw it was coming on. (OH I can be stubborn that way sometimes and I have NO idea why I did not seem to have any sort of liking for this story... because I started watching (half interested, to be honest) and then it was like.. Wow.. HOW could I have missed this movie all this time??? (DUH!) **In fact, I actually OWN this movie (I got it for Christmas several years ago in a James Stewart Westerns box set) and it has just bee SITTING there collecting dust because I had NO interest in seeing it because I thought I wouldn't like it) Silly me. **I hope you'll come back and gab on it with me now you are going to watch it again. I can see why you like it so well.. and yes.. that Dan D. was SOMETHING. ha. (very typical HIM.. and yet.. almost ickier than ever.. ha) I like John McIntire in this one too.. Ick factor WAY over the top for him as well.. I think they both ended up better than they deserved. ha.** But for me, the best part for sure was the "surprise" near the end about Dutch and Lin.. I didn't see that one coming. It gave a whole new spin on the little exchange they have at the beginning (when Dutch accuses Lin of missing in the shooting contest) It was bad enough that he was "taunting" him.. but then it was WORSE when I found out WHO it was he was taunting. Very nice twist. ** (please excuse my ** ha.. but it is the only way I can show the break between paragraphs, I guess.. silly message board) :)

All right! Winchester '73 is one of the first westerns I watched when I was getting into classic film. I'm gonna have to check it out again. Probably tonight. I've learned so much about classic film and westerns since I watched it. I'll actually know the actors more, now. But I definitely know I love Dan Duryea in the film.

YO Grey Dude.. I am watching your Winchester 73 (finally all the way through!) I never could get past the beginning few scenes.. don't know WHY.. because HEY I like it. (wowsa.. who'da thunk it after all these YEARS (upon years) of avoiding it.. ha. Go figure) Its getting down to what I THINK will be the last shoot out (and Jimmy will have his rifle back at LAST (I hope!) But I do have to say.. it is sort of like Anthony Mann and Jimmy Meet the Twilight Zone. ha. (good golly, that dadgum gun gets passed around more times than a full bucket of the Colonel's chicken at the last Rohanaka Family Reunion. HA! ) :D

It seems they were good friends. He was cast in 10 of Ladds films including:
"Lucky Jordon"
"The Blue Dahlia"
"The Iron Mistress"
"Hell on Frisco Bay" and
"Badlanders"

One of my favorites of Caruso was "The Asphalt Jungle" John Huston's crime caper with Caruso as Louis Clavelli, the safecracker..

i think i've seen parts of drum beat but i'm not sure i have seen it all the way through. anything with alan ladd is worth watching. i've read that ladd was good friends with anthony caruso and would arrange to have him in any movie he was doing, if possible.

i caught "man with a camera" on DVD last year. i thought it was very enjoyable and a clever gimmick. i liked the relationship with bronson and his father, it reminded me a little of garner and noah beery, jr. in "the rockford files".

Thanks for the info on Drum Beat next weekend! I probably would have missed it if you two hadn't mentioned it.

Although not in the same league as "Shane", this is never the less one of Alan Ladd's best films after leaving Paramount. This was his first film he produced under his new company Jaguar Productions. This was also the first film Charlie was billed as Charles Bronson after his name change. Based on true incidents in the Modoc Indian Wars there were quite a few inaccuraties, but Delmar Daves handeled the Indian story nicely, a few years earlier he did better work with his "Broken Arrow". Drum Beat is a under rated film.. I had the pleasure of meeting Anthony Caruso when I worked at Ch. 52 in L.A. and he was one of the nicest guys you could meet. I told him how much I enjoyed his work as a tough guy, he said the things he enjoyed the most was doing comedy such as the Abbott and Costello shows, Get Smart, The Doris Day Show. That surprised me..
