I seriously doubt that Titanic had any effect at all on the
outcome of WW II. However much it cost in movie budget
terms, it was probably a drop in the bucket of overall war
expenditures. The Americans, Russians, and British were
starting to close in on Germany, and there was very little
the Germans could do, money or not, to prevent ultimate
defeat.

Hi VP19. Do you or anyone happen to know if the History channel (H2) is going to repeat the documentary that aired last night? I have On-Demand, but I can't find it under the History Channel specials.

Have no idea. You might want to check the History Channel website (not sure of that URL, but I'm certain you can track that down).

Now there's one for TCM Imports

Actually, they have played it on TCM Imports. It was perhaps five or six years ago that I saw it and I believe that it aired again. I'm sure someone around here can provide more info.

I still have my DVD I recorded from the TCM Imports showing...probably from when TCM first showed it, not from when someone said it was shown two years ago, because it's on a brand of blank DVD I no longer use, so that probably goes back five years or so (as someone else said), when I still had a few of these particular discs around.

Never saw this film. But I would have no doubt it was intended to not only stress Capitalism's role in the disaster(which isn't really propaganda) but also to assert the notion of British ineptitude at ship building. We have to admit, like it or not, that if the money spent on this film and other weapon experimentation had been held back and put fully into the war effort, we all might be speaking German. In fact, some of the technology the Nazi's DID develope caused a lot of havoc and really slowed down the allies efforts to quash the fascism. It DID take the efforts of five major armies and several resistance groups five years to finally defeat one enemy. THAT'S tough.

I do recall seeing part of the German "Titanic" on TCM a few years ago.

The History Channel documentary was a real eye-opener for me. I was aware there was a propaganda element to it, but I never realized what a high-level production Goebbels planned, or how its original director died under murky circumstances.

The transfer of huge resources to "Titanic" and the later "Kolberg" (a film whose story I had been aware of), at a time when Germany desperately needed everything it could muster for the war effort, probably played a part in the Allies' victory. Goebbels' interest in film, and in trying to keep up with and possibly surpass Hollywood, is perversely fascinating

This 1943 German version of Titanic has English sub-titles.

I try to find some of these German movies (perhaps on youtube), but they never have any English subtitles on them. It's very frustrating.

OMG! I never heard of any movie with so many production woes as the German "Titanic" had and to top it off, cost the director his life. Was it suicide or murder in the Gestapo prison?

Learned another bit of trivia, the movie also mentioned "Kolberg" (1945) cost at the time more than 8 million marks, in todays dollars $500 million (half a billion $ :0 )

Does this make it the most expensive movie ever made?

See Fred what you almost didn't learned. :)

Originally, the History Channel showed history documentaries. Now that channel shows nonsense programs about junk collectors and pawn shops. Seems that H2 now does what H1 originally did. But Directv now wants more money for H2 so I can see documentaries on the History Channel. Not going to play their game. The next step will be H3, and they'll want more money for it. So, I'm watching TCM now.

What a great documentary about the inception and production of the German "Titanic" (1942) playing on History International. (now called H2 ) DTV channel 271 :)

Synopsis from Directv..
The little known story of Joseph Goebbles' disaster movie "Titanic". The big budget epic pulled massive resources from the war effort and blamed British capatilists for the huge loss of life.

Running time 2 hours.

This documentary will air again tonight Sunday @ 1:00 am.
Film buffs, you should watch this! I had absolutely no idea this much was involved in the making of the Nazi movie!
