You are not kidding! That is an amazing resemblance. I wonder if Rains knew about that. There was a film made by 20th Century Fox in the late 1950s called THE REMARKABLE MR. PENNYPACKER. It is also set in Pennsylvania, and I wonder if it is related to the story of the real Pennypackers...? Clifton Webb starred.

Did you know Claude had a bit of a doppleganger in Pennsylvania governor Samuel Pennypacker? My sister and I were touring the Pennypacker mansion in south eastern Pennsylvania a few years ago and gasped when we saw his portrait:

Claude Rains

In THE INVISIBLE MAN:

Power, I said! Power to walk into the gold vaults of the nations, into the secrets of kings, into the Holy of Holies; power to make multitudes run squealing in terror at the touch of my little invisible finger. Even the moon's frightened of me, frightened to death!

Smiley Burnette

In GOLDTOWN GHOST RIDERS:

Nobody's ever seen 'em. That is close, anyhow. Ever so often they come ridin' out of Ghost Canyon, up there where there's mists and clouds. If you look, you can see right now. Down out of their hidden canyons they come, like they was ridin' out of another world. Protectin' their hidden gold, that's why they're hauntin' us -- keepin' gold-hungry miners from diggin' up their graves.
