One last comment----Each Saturday at 8PM, before Drew and RO come on, they play some previous comments. One soundbite from Drew----"It's the perfect Essen-shal". The way she says the last word is with such a "Valley Girl" accent that it almost makes me barf every time I hear it. I know, I should just turn on the TV at about 8:05.

Cb, mon amie, I was not putting down Drew at all.
I don't mind her, sometimes I even like her. And I like quite a few of her movies.

My problem is not with Drew, or anyone in particular. It's more with how the "wraparounds" for featured movies (whether we're talking about "the Essentials" or some other TCM time slot) are fairly shallow. This even includes my fave, Ben the Mank, and Illeana Douglas, whom I quite like.

Maybe it's a "time" issue - not enough- but I find these "discussions" around the movie they're presenting are unsatisfyingly lightweight. Or, not even that, really. It's more, they talk around the film, rather than about it.

Could be, it's just the way it has to be. I remember, back in the 80s and 90s, when here in Ontario we had Elwe Yost hosting "Saturday Night at the Movies" ( on TVO), much as I loved most of the films he chose, and liked Elwe himself, there was very little "meaty" conversation around the movies they'd just aired. Elwe would go "Well, wasn't that exciting" or something, which was endearing but not very enlightening.
Perhaps the only way I could get what I'm talking about here is to enrol in a university film course. Been there, done that, too.

I agree with you Casablancalover2. Some people here put WAY too much importance on this.

I think some here are waay too hard on Drew. She has a great twitter feed, and she is younger than some us. well, younger than me, and we need all voices here to keep the dialog strong on classic movies.

GarageQueen, I love your screen name !

I don't mind Drew, although I do sort of see what her detracters mean when they deplore the way she speaks, etc.
She cannot be all that dumb, she's acted in many films ( some of which are good) and she's directed several as well.

I always find the discussions surrounding the film being shown, both before and after, to be a little disappointing, and this applies to all the hosts and guests and previous "Essential" co-hosts, not just Drew.
It seems they're usually more interested in talking about obscure details and facts ( this or that character actor when on to star in this or that other movie, or so-and-so didn't get along with this or that person...) I don't care about stuff like that. I wish they'd get into more in-depth discussion and analysis of the movie being featured.. ( After we've seen it, not before.)

I find there's usually a lot to say about a film, yet they rarely say much.

finance - You are not alone! I also do not like Drew as the co-host. I get that TCM wants to play to their (younger-than-expected) demographic, but she is not the person for the job. She mis-states facts, she often uses words incorrectly ("juxtaposition" will be the death of me yet) and frankly doesn't offer much in the way of insight. What she does seem to offer is the cutesy, non-threatening little girl to gush over movies (which she's a little old to be doing at 37, IMHO) while Robert provides actual content.

But, to be honest, I've been a little disappointed with Robert's input for "The Essentials" this year. Example: ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM. Drew and Robert had an entire discussion comparing the two versions (this one and the musical THE KING AND I) but neither one of them mentioned how Anna's story is (basically) a fabrication. A couple of us spent the entire movie on twitter pointing out all of the historical innacuracies, but not a peep from Drew or Robert.

As someone who cut her movie teeth on Siskel & Ebert, I expect more in a discussion about a movie than just the gushy school-girlishness of "I love Peter O'Toole!" or "I heart Richard Dreyfuss!" I want insight, I want historical context, I want them to call a movie out on using actors in yellow-face or on their sexist/racist portrayals. But what we're getting is gushing and fawning. sigh

FYI - I've been transcribing their discussions on my blog. It's been equal parts maddening and hilarious. (http://garagequeen.tumblr.com/)

Sorry for the timelapse, finance. It may have been "The View." No, not Olga's. I think Olga's is closed for construction on Rt. 73. I don't know the details.

Update . . . :( No more Olga's:

She was on some daytime TV talk show on Friday. I was having breakfast in a diner and they had a TV in the other room. (I wasn't disappointed at not having a good vantage point.)

Hopefully Drew is out shopping for some new clothes. That gold and black bathrobe thing she wore last season is gag-worthy, indeed.

Good idea, but most technician types would probably have on-air personalities reminiscent of dishrags.

Perhaps. But I've watched that Kevin Brownlow series on the silent era many times, and the segment about the stuntmen featured Yakima Canutt, Harvey Parry, and other stuntmen from the era, and they were very articulate, interesting, and witty. (It's "Hollywood:A Celebration Of The American Silent Film", a 13-part series. Extremely good. So is the companion series, "Cinema Europe:The Other Hollywood", about Europe's silent film industry-6 segments, IIRC.)

For starters, she's got to stop hanging out at the Sherman Oaks Galleria.
