I'd say that the cut-off point should be around 1969.

Up here in Detroit, we had weatherman SONNY ELLIOT who would crack one-liners while doing his reports: "We have here a cold front moving slower than a teen-ager towards his chores" "There's a fella up there who has advice for hunting rabbits. Just hide in the grass and make a sound like a carrot!" He finally retired a couple of years ago from a local radio news station.

Back to the subject at hand; No matter what someone's definition of a classic movie is, TCM faces a couple of problems.

1. If your definition to qualify as "classic" means a cut-off year, there ARE only a limited number of movies made in that period in spite of the fact there were hundreds of movies made. Availability, many not on the market, many lost or tied up in some sort of legality. The only thing left is to keep showing the same movies they have on hand. And since TCM runs 24/7, this could eat through the playlist quickly. THEN people come here to gripe that TCM keeps playing the "same old/same old".

2. To prevent that, TCM expands their criteria for what is "classic", offers more variety and choices, and STILL has people gripe about something!

It's a "can't win-can't win" situation. However, I think most of us will agree that their rotation could use some adjustment.

Yes, Tex was actually entertaining to watch as he sketched clouds and spirals of wind or a big smiling Sun up in the sky. Plus he had "Uncle Wethbee" who was an "assistant" that was just painted faces, probably made from wood:

Wow, I haven't thought of Tex Antoine in years. About all I remember is his
receding hairline and his moustache. Didn't he also draw simple picures of
the day's weather? I think I moved before his infamous rape remark, but I
remember reading about it. Hear now the news.

Antoine was trying to be amusing - he was on WABC which was the first station in NYC to adopt the "happy news" format. Somehow I doubt that we'll find the remark among the writings of Confucius.

About a dozen years later, a candidate for Governor in Texas - Clayton Williams - made the same remark, but he said that "rape is like bad weather, if it's inevitable, just relax and enjoy it."

Williams lost the election to Ann Richards.

Did Confucius actually say that? Or was it some comedian or politician or something?

As Tex Antoine said, don't fight it, just enjoy it.

Actually, what Tex Antoine said was "With rape so predominant in the news lately, it is well to remember the words of Confucius: 'If rape is inevitable, lie back and enjoy it.'"

The switchboard lit up like the tree at Rockefeller Center at Christmas.

It cost him his job because his apology moments later was to say that he didn't know the latest story concerned a very young girl. That only increased the flood of phone calls from women who were rightly outraged.

IMHO it's any film which I enjoy and find entertaining ...even if it's a movie released last week.

A classic film for me would be any movie from any time that causes you to see the world differently after viewing.

Just to prove my point, t'other day we finished watching whatever movie we were watching and saw TCM was showing THE STING--one of my favorites, and a classic I would say. But my dad asked, "Why is TCM showing this?" I said, "Because it's great. They show it all the time." He said, "But that film isn't a classic--it came out when I was in high school!"

See what I mean? :)

But I think in terms of how old a film has to be before it's a classic,

Nah, not anymore. I've seen the light. If a movie made yesterday is good enough for Timewarner Current Media aka TCM to declare a classic, it's good enough for me.

As Tex Antoine said, don't fight it, just enjoy it.
