Trump vs. the Press/Media

Donald Trump and the media: The problem isn’t too much coverage — it’s how this president is covered

....“When you repeat Trump, you help Trump. You do this by spreading his message wide and far.”

Lakoff calls for coverage of Trump that does not allow him to narrate the frame. “The key,” he argues, “is to direct a ‘stream’ of proactive, accurate messaging at the targeted audience.” Lakoff offers these easy tips for better news coverage:

  • Don’t use any of Trump's terms, images or hashtags
  • Ignore his antics
  • Shift the frame to focus on powerful and truthful reporting

We could add additional tips culled from the insights of Wolf and other political comedians who have repeatedly called out the failings of TV news:

  • Stop inviting Trump shills on air to spread their lies, hypocrisy and BS
  • Stop airing Trump rants and letting him take up so much airtime
  • Don’t let a flat-out falsehood stand on air
  • End the pundit panels that devolve into unhinged shouting matches
  • Stop worrying about covering “all sides” to a story, when one of the sides represents a racist kakistocracy that only want to amass more power

When lies are repeated constantly, they are even harder to cognitively discard. Even more important, when lies are used as hooks in headlines, even if they are refuted later in the article, it is hard to forget them. So, the key is to bury the lie, and make the lede the fact that Trump or his spokespeople are lying. ...

.... why it is the satirists and comedians who often get at Trump coverage better than straight news. As Seth Meyers explained to Van Jones, satire goes after hypocrisy. It isn’t obsessed with Trump; it is obsessed with Trump’s hypocrisy. .....

I'm willing to give Ouachita Baptist a break here--

after all, the father is the first teacher of a child, by words but, most of all, by deeds.

That is how Brit Hume sees the world. Objectivity is not a concept he’s ever understood so Fox News and Roger Ailes came along just in time to give him a career as a GOP propagandist. He is a see no evil fellow at the misogynistic and malicious Fox News.

Fox tells its audience what they want to hear.

This is about as clear a statement as you will find that when Republicans say “Fake News” what they mean is reporting.

AND  good solid reporting has a tendency to bring out the truth.

Dozens of Russian fake Twitter accounts posted real local news for months, building readership for future U.S. influence efforts

----------------------------------------------------

The information operatives who worked out of the Internet Research Agency in St. Petersburg did not stop at posing as American social media users or spreading false information from purported news sources, according to new details.

They also created a number of Twitter accounts that posed as sources for Americans' hometown headlines.

NPR has reviewed information connected with the investigation and found 48 such accounts. They have names such as @ElPasoTopNews, @MilwaukeeVoice, @CamdenCityNews and @Seattle_Post.............

First, that the Russian misinformation project was a years-long effort, one that wasn't simply focused on the 2016 election but on destabilizing the United States over an extended period of time.

"The Russians are playing a long game. They've developed a presence on social media. They've created these fictitious persons and fictitious organizations that have built up over a period of time a certain trustworthiness among people that follow them,".......

Though this particular effort to exploit local news failed, the Russian misinformation campaign continues now.

"This effort is not over," said Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican on the Senate intelligence committee. "It continues to this very day, where the Russians are trying to sow the seeds of discontent in our society, take advantage of the polarization that exists."

If one watches only Fox news and nothing else, it's no wonder they're clueless about what's really going on.

I believe Fox News is only giving the Fox News audience what they want to hear. In fact, basically, what they already think anyway.

They are successful because they are catering to the already vacuous minds of their audience.

I don't believe Fox created this audience. They just recognize that these people were out there and they knew how to pull them in.

Ignorance, Prejudice and Stupidity is easy to cater to.

Old enough to remember when other networks came to the defense of Fox News WH correspondents during the Obama years. Such did not happen here.

Lesson for the kids out there: no one should ever try to do the right thing with the expectation it will ever be reciprocated.

Trump’s attacks on the U.S. media while overseas — crying “fake news” and bashing correspondents from CNN and NBC — come as he prepares to meet with (in hopes of befriending) Vladimir Putin, who jails and kills journalists.

The Biggest Newspaper In Finland Trolls Trump With 300 Billboards Touting The Free Press

....Trump and Putin will see the billboards as they leave the airport to go to the summit.

There will be 280 billboards along the route featuring past news headlines about the leaders’ treatment of the press. The newspaper sponsoring the billboards, the Helsingin Sanomat, reminds everyone that Finland is one of the world leaders in press freedom, so as they put it, “these headlines are free to tell the truth.” There is a giant billboard welcoming Trump and Putin to the land of the free press....

WH Stenographer Who Resigned in Protest: Trump's "Not Even Trying to Tell the Truth"

...."In my five years with President Barack Obama, off-the-record discussions with reporters happened after work hours—not for an hour in the middle of the work day, and certainly not before an interview," she wrote in an op-ed at the New York Times. "When a president spoke on the record with a reporter, his staff made sure to have a stenographer present so there could be an official White House transcript, just in case the reporter came out with an inaccurate quotation."

"If President Trump was really interested in fighting 'fake news,' he would have a stenographer present and also would have that transcript ready to go and say, '...We have the transcript, we can just refer to this,'" she said, also pointed to a recent interview Trump gave with British tabloid The Sun which he dubbed "fake news."

"Mr. Trump likes to call anyone who disagrees with him 'fake news,'" she wrote at the Times. "But if he's really the victim of so much inaccurate reporting, why is he so averse to having the facts recorded and transcribed?"

"It's clear that White House stenographers do not serve his administration, but rather his adversary: the truth," ...

If you're the Press Secretary of a liar, then you're a liar too.

If your boss is a liar who makes a fool of himself in public, then you have to do the same thing in public too.
