Thanks for providing this information. It might help if you could format it with more spacing between sections so it is easier to read. I like how you have included whether something is a repeat.

Yes, this is great info and I see that it was edited with more spacing (thanks!).

But I wonder why it ends in 2011.

It has now been updated and covers every guest programmer up to December 2016.

If you were a guest programmer on TCM which films would you select that would air on the program as a TCM premiere or a repeat?

Interesting question. We had a thread about this a few months ago in the General Discussion forum (which really should have been moved over here).

The four I selected had a theme of reconciliation-- I CONFESS (1953); THE CONFESSIONS OF TOM HARRIS (1969); ABSOLUTION (1978); and MASS APPEAL (1984). Of these, I believe only the first one has aired on TCM.

What about you-- what would you choose?

Well I was hoping that I would have them showcase the film Hells Harbor from 1930 with Lupe Velez. The film was shot in the city of Tampa by Henry King and it starred a newspaper reporter from the Tampa Tribune that became a movie actor, Rondo Hatton.

Very interesting. I wasn't aware of how Rondo Hatton got his start in Hollywood.

Of all the films on this list, which have you seen or not seen before. Send me a reply, once you have selected your answer. It doesn't have to be from this list but it can be from another list elsewhere on the blog.

If I were on the TCM Guest Programmer spot my top 4 choices would be based on a central theme: controversy. The films are: Fritz the Cat (1972), Akira (1988), Monty Python's The Life of Brian (1979), and UHF (1989). Or an alternative list that would focus on films that are forgotten: Night on the Galactic Railroad (1985), Bugsy Malone (1976), Peyton Place (1957), On the Beach (1959).

That's an interesting group of films.

With the first group, what was the controversy about Akira or UHF?

As for the second, I had to look up the first one, as I hadn't heard of it, which is rare. But the other three are still fairly well known. On the Beach is shown occasionally still, isn't it?

I believe TCM has shown On the Beach and Peyton Place in the last few years.      As we have discussed saying a film is forgotten (or a star is underrated) isn't a personal opinion but instead assuming the collective opinion of other people,  which often takes one into muddy waters.

Sometimes forgotten or underrated has to do with stars' films being absent from view. For example, none of Tony Curtis' Universal output airs on TCM (and there was quite a lot of it-- many hit films for him at that studio). It's not really subjective my saying this, but factual. As a result of the non-screenings of those motion pictures, they become forgotten (especially if they are not on home video). The actor himself becomes underrated because people forget he gave all these other great performances that now go unseen.

From what I could piece together, Akira was controversial for its stylized violence and sexual imagery combined with body horror that almost feels like a Cronenberg film. But it is groundbreaking in showcasing the hypocrisy of its broken-down and corrupted government that made it feel so controversial in its landscape. UHF had a minor controversy with the American Ratings Board over the PG-13 rating. Originally the film was supposed to be rated PG, since the content in the film felt in-between than adult humor. Some of the content that concerned the ratings board was the Conan library sequence, the thumb cutting sequence from the buzzsaw, and the flying poodles from Mamuel's apartment.

Out of all the films that I have listed for the guest programmers and the films they have chosen, which of these films have you seen? Send me a rough estimate number and mention the films that you have not seen as a reminder or a suggestion.

Now with the passing of Robert Osborne, Ben Mankewicz will have to take over Robert's place, as well as Tiffany Vasquez. I am sad that I will no longer get to see Robert again. He was a shining beacon of hope on the program. But, as they say, push on ahead and keep moving forward. TCM will become strong, even without Robert, by coming up with new programming as well as guest hosts taking over different spotlights and segments on the channel.

Of all the guest programmers on TCM, I have seen only half of the people on this list. The only time I have seen a guest programmer on TCM is Amy Heckerling. The other half of the guest programmers, I watched on Youtube.

If you want to look at previous guest programmers who were on Turner Classic Movies visit the Youtube channel SonofaSpaceApe from September 2013 to December 2015. They are divided into chunks or some of the few minutes of the outro or intro was cut off.

I have a question re.the guest programmers to be used on the return of the Essentials. Is Alex Baldwin going to have each as a guest with him, or will he do his weeks and be followed by the others in succession?

Alec Baldwin will be on all of the shows, with the guests changing. So Alec + Dave Letterman one month, then Alec + Tina Fey the next, then Alec + William Friedkin.

Judging by the promos already released for it, I would guess they've all already been filmed, too. They could film several months worth of intros and outros in a few days time.
