GOP madness Unbound...

After reading the whistleblower complaint,

Sen. Ben Sasse cautions all parties to pump the brakes.

To those in his party, he says: “Republicans ought not to be rushing to circle the wagons and say there’s no there there

when there’s obviously a lot that’s very troubling there.”

On whether Senators would vote for impeachment,
@murphymike says,

"One Republican senator told me if it was a SECRET vote,

30 Republican senators would vote to impeach Trump." #AMRstaff

  <_<

Easy to say that because it is not a secret vote.  I had more faith in Andrea Mitchell's objectivity.

“Worth This Investment”: Memos Reveal

the Scope and Racial Animus of GOP Gerrymandering Ambitions

....... GOP leaders come clean: Their nationwide advantage in state legislatures and Congress is built on gerrymandering. And top Republican strategists and political operatives admit to weaponizing racial data and the Voting Rights Act in order to flip the South red and tilt electoral maps in their direction. ........

They offer additional insights into the Republican’s 2010 Redistricting Majority Project, or REDMAP, strategy — a $30 million push to capture swing-state legislative chambers ahead of the decennial redistricting — and new evidence that the GOP viewed these maps as the firewall that allowed them to retain control of the U.S. House and multiple state legislatures despite the 2012 Democratic wave.

The title of one late 2012 memo makes it clear:

“RNC Redistricting Program Underpins GOP Success in U.S. House and State Legislatures.”.........

This is more important for the long term health of America than impeaching Donald Trump.  This is the type activity that enabled a person such as Trump to become president and McConnell to control the US Senate.

While the national politics gets most of the attention, far too few Americans realize the importance of what happens at the county and state levels.  The states and their legislatures control the future of America.  Most state legislators began their careers at municipal or county levels.

Republicans Block FEC From Publishing Rule On Banning Foreign Election Interference

...Here is the summary of the draft rule that Republicans blocked from publication,

“The Federal Election Commission is summarizing its interpretation of the prohibition on foreign national contributions, donations, expenditures, and disbursements in connection with a federal, state, or local election, as well as the prohibition on soliciting, accepting, or receiving a contribution from a foreign national, under the Federal Election Campaign Act and Commission regulations.”

...To summarize, a Republican FEC commissioner blocked the publication of the commission’s entire weekly digest,

because he did not want the draft rule on banning foreign nationals from donating and candidates from accepting their donations and assistance to be printed........

Republicans who back an impeachment inquiry can save the country — and the GOP

The party was able to reinvent itself after Nixon's resignation because it had distanced itself from his presidency. It must do the same today.

"......But because the Republican Party had separated itself from Nixon, it could spend its wilderness years forming a new identity. In 1980, infused with fresh energy and led by Ronald Reagan, the Republican Party returned to power, and conservatism became the dominant force in American politics until the financial crisis of 2008.

Ditching Nixon proved to be in the best long-term interests of the party.

Abandoning Donald Trump will, as well. The country once again needs a revitalized GOP. Trumpism needs to be exorcized from the party of Lincoln and Reagan..........

while many of Trump’s allies in Congress are circling the wagons, there are many Republicans privately trying to figure out how to best navigate the moment. If only there was an elder statesman who could rally the remaining adults in the Senate to do what’s right.

Hello, Mitt Romney....

Shrewd calculation may be exactly what the party needs. If 2019 is like 1972, Republicans are smart to be putting space between themselves and Trump.

If Romney’s place in the Senate is to be the elder statesman who can help that process along, the party — and the country — will thank him for it.

Eventually. "

Fox News Host Todd Starnes Out After Suggesting Democrats Worship Pagan God Moloch

8f6d8206994729d517c421ab6db07e00

Todd Starnes’ contract at Fox News is not being renewed. The host will no longer be working at the network, its website, or its premium subscription service, Fox Nation.

His removal comes a few days after he said on his radio program on Monday that Democrats do not believe in the Christian God and instead may worship Moloch, a pagan god often associated with child sacrifice. When asked for comment, Fox News confirmed the news that Starnes is no longer working at the network but did not elaborate on the reasons behind Starnes’ departure.

Interesting, but as I have said before, this is not the Republican Party of 1974 and following years.  The GOP lost the 1976 election to Jimmy Carter, who proved to be a weak president.

There are no elder statesmen or moderates and God knows Mitt Romney sure as heck is not one.  Even he has not definitively rejected Trumpism.  Furthermore, the current GOPers are afraid of Trump and his allies.

Reagan's 1980 campaign was aided by Democratic dissatisfaction with Carter, the Iran hostage crisis, and a worsening economy at home marked by high unemployment and inflation. Even then Reagan won the election with only 50.7% of the popular vote.  Like Trump, he won the election in the Electoral College 489 to 49 for Carter.

Do NOT expect the GOP to get rid of Trump and Trumpism.  Not going to happen.

By all appearances, the President’s brazen and unprecedented appeal to China and to Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden is wrong and appalling.

When the only American citizen President Trump singles out for China’s investigation
is his political opponent in the midst of the Democratic nomination process,

it strains credulity to suggest that it is anything other than politically motivated.

Pathetic:

The old I don’t recall wanting the Ukraine prosecutor removed
even if I wrote a letter supporting what Biden did!

Three GOP senators Ron Johnson, Portman and Kirk

'don’t remember' signing 2016 letter urging 'reform' of Ukraine prosecutor's office.
==========================

GOP senator says he 'doesn't remember' signing 2016 letter

urging 'reform' of Ukraine prosecutor's office...

......... Johnson did acknowledge the letter in an interview Thursday on WIBA's "The Vicki McKenna Show," saying

"The whole world, by the way, including the Ukranian caucus, which I signed the letter, the whole world felt that this that Sholkin wasn't doing a [good] enough job. So we were saying hey you've ... got to rid yourself of corruption." ....

" I look at that transcript and I go, it's Trump being Trump," Johnson said, according to the Journal-Sentinel. .....

" It is unfortunate that Senator Johnson seems to have forgotten a time when he put the country's values over his own politics,
but perhaps re-reading his well-articulated words whole-heartedly agreeing with Joe Biden's push to move the anti-corruption cause in Ukraine forward
will help him on his journey back to intellectual consistency," Bates added.

WATCH: In a town hall, a woman presses Republican Iowa Sen. Ernst about standing up to President Trump:

"Where is the line? ... You didn't pledge an oath to the president, you pledged it to our country, you pledged it to our Constitution."

As you know,  Romney has no official powers to do anything.    E.g. He doesn't have a vote with regards to impeachment.     Your post implies you expect him do so something and I'm curious what this something is.

(of course I would want him to vote for a conviction if\when Trump is impeached).

Replying to
Any senator—Democrat, Republican or Independent

— who sends out a fundraising email saying how he or she is going to vote (guilty or not guilty)

BEFORE THE IMPEACHMENT TRIAL is asking to be paid for that vote.

That senator should be expelled from the Senate for corruption.
