A Suspected Russian Spy, With Curious Ties to Washington

A longtime Republican operative has been in contact with a suspected Russian intelligence agent for nearly two decades.

What does it mean for Robert Mueller's investigation?

...... The Washington-based operative, Sam Patten, would not tell me whether he has been interviewed by Mueller’s team as part of their investigation into Russia’s election interference and potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow. But Patten said that his relationship with Kilimnik—a former officer in Russia’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) who worked closely with Trump’s campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his deputy, Rick Gates, for over a decade—has “been thoroughly explored by relevant government entities.” ......

Significance of Sam Patten plea deal isn't clear to most people yet

- Konstantin Kilimnik (ex-GRU) worked for Patten in Russia 2001-2003 before Kilimnik worked for Manafort,

Patten & Kilimnik formed company in 2015 & Patten contracted on shady Cambridge Analytica deals since 2014

Should be interesting when Mueller hits Donny Junior with a subpoena armed with Manafort's testimony.

Bob Woodward tells New York Magazine that he doesn't know if Trump colluded with Russia but that a younger journalist could find the answer.

I'm willing to accept that challenge—as I think in the digital age "horizontal" journalism, i.e. curatorial journalism, gets us the answer.

.......... Horizontal journalism connects far-flung news stories in a way that fundamentally changes our understanding of what each individual story is telling us. My point: we know *far* more about Trump-Russia collusion than conventional journalists are telling us or than they realize.

...... What's at issue is the youth of the *journalism*—an understanding of digital culture, digital theory, and digital journalism that allows us to arrive at truth through new methods that weren't available to us last century. ...

McFarland now says Flynn may have been referring to sanctions when they spoke in late Dec. 2016 after Flynn’s calls with Russia’s ambassador.

But this summer, McFarland denied to the FBI ever talking to Flynn about any discussion of sanctions between him and the ambassador.

KT McFarland lied to the @FBI and Congress about a critical event in the Russia probe.

(Or as the @nytimes would put it, she made a statement that was false).

Why do so many current and former @realDonaldTrump officials keep lying to the American people about Russia?

James Carville was on CNN yesterday and on the subject of Russian cyber meddling in the 2016 election he said that the targeting was so precise that they had to be aided by Americans.  One example he gave was targeting Blacks in Indiana to tell them they could vote by text.  Carville said the only question is who were these Americans that were helping the Russians?  He added that he expects Mueller to know the answer to that one.

My guess is that it was Jerrod Kushner (and possibly Don. Jr.)  as he too was involved in setting up a company to target voters over the internet.  He gave the targets to the Russians.

Was There a Connection Between a Russian Bank and the Trump Campaign?

A team of computer scientists sifted through records of unusual Web traffic in search of answers.

"..... Why was the Trump Organization’s domain, set up to send mass-marketing e-mails, conducting such meagre activity? And why were computers at Alfa Bank and Spectrum Health trying to reach a server that didn’t seem to be doing anything?

After analyzing the data, Max said, “We decided this was a covert communication channel.” ....

“Not only is there clearly something there but there’s clearly something that someone has gone to great lengths to conceal,” he told me. Jean Camp, of Indiana University, had also vetted some of the data. “These people who should not be communicating are clearly communicating,” ......

Don McGahn, the White House counsel, came from Jones Day, one of the law firms that represent Alfa Bank in the United States. McGahn brought five Jones Day lawyers with him into the White House; six more were appointed to senior posts in the Administration. Jones Day has done work for businesses belonging to a long list of Russian oligarchs, including Oleg Deripaska, Viktor Vekselberg, and Alexander Mashkevich.

The firm has also represented the Trump campaign in its dealings with Robert Mueller. For this reason, McGahn secured an ethics waiver that allows him to talk to his old firm when its clients have business before the U.S. government. ...

“The client was a Russian bank that is under suspicion of having a direct connection with the Trump campaign,” Senator Richard Durbin said, during the hearing.

He and the other Democratic senators were especially troubled that Benczkowski would not commit to recusing himself from dealing with Mueller’s investigation, even though he had worked for two of Russia’s leading oligarchs.

One campaign meets with the Russians while the other campaign met with the FBI.
