The  artist and illustrator Bernie Wrightson, who co-created the comic book character Swamp Thing, has died of brain cancer at the age of 68.

"Swamp Thing," the story of a scientist who becomes transformed into the title creature after a lab accident, was the idea of writer Len Wein. Wrightson illustrated the tale, which first appeared in the DC comic House of Secrets #92 (June–July 1971). A "Swamp Thing" comic series began a year later. It inspired a 1982 Wes Craven film, a 1989 movie sequel and a 1990s television series on the USA Network.


Wrightson's character Captain Sternn, who first appeared in the June 1980 issue of Heavy Metal magazine, was featured in the 1981 screen fantasy anthology "Heavy Metal."

That's terrible news. I was a fan of his. I really liked the B & W adaptation of Frankenstein he did.
