Also, try to imagine what each holiday season would be like without Cole's version of "The Christmas Song."

The Mel Torme version would be fine;  he wrote the music and co-wrote the lyrics.

PS:  and Nat is my #1 person I would like to be stuck with on a desert island (as a musical partner that is).

Cole had movie connections, too. He had No. 1 hits with his recordings of "Nature Boy" (from the 1948 drama "The Boy With Green Hair") and "Mona Lisa" (from the 1950 film "Captain Carey, U.S.A.).

He also performed the song "Blue Gardenia" in Fritz Lang's 1953 film noir "The Blue Gardenia," which starred Anne Baxter, Richard Conte, Raymond Burr, Ann Sothern and Richard Erdman.

Cole and Stubby Kaye were the roving balladeers in the 1965 Western comedy "Cat Ballou," which starred Jane Fonda and Lee Marvin (a Best Actor Oscar winner for a dual role). The film was released four months after Cole's death from lung cancer at the age of 45 on February 15, 1965

If Martin's most famous movie role is The Captain in "Cool Hand Luke," then what's second best? My favorite is the ill-fated Bolivian mine owner in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969).

This has got to be a record when it comes to celebrity marriages. Here's a story about them.

The Centennial Couple – Kirk Douglas is 102 and his Wife Anne Just Turned 100!

Richard Todd was one of the best things about "The Longest Day," producer Darryl F. Zanuck's 1962 re-creation of the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944. The British actor portrayed Major John Howard of D Company, whose infantrymen were among the first to land behind enemy lines in gliders. Howard's task was to capture a couple of bridges -- including the Pegasus span over the Caen Canal -- and "hold until relieved."

As it happened, Todd was an Irish paratrooper whose battalion was involved in the mission. He had a chance to appear as himself in "The Longest Day," but he chose the juicier role of Major Howard. Another actor played Todd.

Happy centennial birthday to Gower Champion, born June 22nd, 1919!

* Some sources list his birth year as 1920 or 1921, but more of them list it as 1919.

I'm sure "Doctor Strangelove" and "Blazing Saddles" are the films for which he's best remembered. But I really like his scenes near the end of Sam Peckinpah's "The Getaway" (1972) with Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw.
