Posting an Orwell quote in an anti-socialist thread is very ironic. Orwell fought with the Socialists in Spain against Franco and the Falangists. Orwell was a life long Socialist who only hated "middle class socialists" because he thought they didn't truly care about the proletariat and those of the lower classes who suffered.

Thank goodness there is no misery or poverty in non-socialist

and non-communist countries.

The reasons for poverty is complex, there's no fix all solution.  Unfortunately many do fall through the cracks in getting assistance.  No system is perfect. We do have the highest living standard in the world.

Most of the lists I see have the US at #17 or 18.

  1. Canada
  2. Denmark
  3. Sweden
  4. Norway
  5. Australia
  6. Switzerland
  7. Finland
  8. Netherlands
  9. New Zealand
  10. Germany

UK was 13, Japan was 14 and France was 16--the US came in next at 17.

I've lived in all those countries and I really think that Japan and France should have come in ahead of the UK. But the Brits are certainly hospitable and friendly!

There is no fix all solution but having nationalized healthcare might be a start.

There are demographics and geographical areas in the United States that have a maternal childbirth death rate like a third world country.

Plus medical outcomes are so varied in the United States, according to race and/or class that it's hard to say that there aren't a number of populations and geographical areas where they're almost living like citizens in a second or third world nation.

Denmark has socialism and yet the Danes are among the happiest people on earth. Don't you think where Venezuela failed was having cronyism at high levels for so long? Most of Europe follows a democratic socialist model and looks nothing like Venezuela. Now I admit, things might change if the United States hadn't been protecting Europe with our military might since the end of WWII, because then they would have to find the money for defense.
