The Fruits of White Supremacy-- Murder and Violence

192 posts in this topic

Unfortunately we have dual histories when it comes to racism in the United States. We have the history of slavery and Jim Crow, the history of Japanese relocation camps, the history of Native American genocide.

Fortunately we also have a history of Martin Luther King jr's Nonviolent Civil Rights Movement, positive civil rights legislation from Harry S Truman and Lyndon B Johnson and civil rights activists from all Races, ethnicities and classes-- people like--

*Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman, two Young Jewish white men from New York City who were murdered by the Klan because they were trying to register black voters in Mississippi, 1964. Schwerner and Goodman were joined by a young black man who was from the area, James Chaney-- he was murdered as well.

These are those three famous Civil Rights workers who were martyrs to the cause of anti- racism in America. But there was also a little-known martyr at this time - - a white woman.

Viola Liuzzo was a white housewife and mother of five when she volunteered in 1965 to go to Selma Alabama to work in the Civil Rights Movement. She did this because she was an Unitarian Universalist Activist. She volunteered to be a driver for participants in the Selma to Montgomery March.

On March 25th, 1965, the 39 year -old white housewife from Michigan was shot dead by 3 Ku Klux Klan members, as she was on her way back from shuttling an activist to the Montgomery Airport.

These are just a few of the many Martyrs against racism in the United States.

Heather Heyer, a 32 year -old white woman from Virginia, has now joined this illustrious group of people who willingly gave their lives so that America could be a real democracy and true to its Constitutional heritage.

In America we have a choice of going down one of these roads.

Our history has not been all bad and it certainly hasn't been all good, yet at the same time only we alone can create the future.

Heather Heyer died on August 12th, 2017 in Charlottesville Virginia as a Patriotic American Supporting Democracy.

Heather was murdered in a white supremacist riot gone brutally savage.

Charlottesville Police said a young Neo-Nazi participant plowed his car into a crowd of Americans protesting the white supremacy rally--

hitting and killing Heather.

Heather was 32 years -old.

PRINCESS----Being a Michigander I'm well aware of  Viola.  Much was made of here death here at the time.

And as I've also mentioned,  White people have trouble getting along with EACH OTHER,  due to stupid ethnic animosity(like the Irish not liking "those eye-talians", or the Poles hating "those Krauts" etc.  And even Northerners hating "Hillbillies" and such) that to stop hating any OTHER "people of color" is going to take longer than expected.  But, IMHO, it's already taken TOO long.

On this date in 1955, Emmett Till was abducted by two white men in Mississippi and brutally murdered. 62 years ago.

Till.jpg?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss

The murderers of the 14 year-old Chicago boy were acquitted by an all-white jury.

They had no problem however in bragging about murdering the teenager in a 1956 Look magazine interview, since they were protected by double jeopardy.

Thus, the two murderers who brutally lynched the boy were never punished by a court of law.

Truly the only up side in all this was that it launched the modern Civil Rights Movement.

So if you act on what is truly offensive in a positive way--

it can lead to amazing results.

Charlottesville victim Heather Heyer's mom tells white supremacists "you've just magnified her" in a powerful speech http://rol.st/2wg2Jx7

Heather's mother was left to explain why her daughter was there on that fateful Saturday protesting neo-nazis, the Ku Klux Klan and all kinds of white supremacists--she had to tell the nation and the world what her daughter stood for.

She said that if she had to lose her child, then she would make it count for something in the real world.

By Killing Heather, Heather's message of love --

against the hate of white supremacy

--was made Louder, Clearer and Universal--

positioned up front for all the world to see.

Medgar Evers-- 1925-1963

World War II Veteran

Graduate of Alcorn State University

Husband and Father of Three children

Today's victim of white supremacy is Medgar Evers. Medgar Evers had the most difficult job of being the Field Secretary of the NAACP in Jackson Mississippi.

He was gunned down and murdered in front of his own home on June 13, 1963 by a white supremacist Klansmen, who was also a member of the notorious white councils.

Due to the all-white juries and the institutional racism in Mississippi,

Medgar Evers' murderer was not brought to Justice, unbelievably, until 1994.

Both Bob Dylan and Nina Simone wrote and recorded songs honoring this martyr to Freedom.

In 1996, Rob Reiner directed Ghosts of Mississippi, a movie based on the final trial in 1994 that finally convicted the white supremacist murderer of

Medgar Evers.

James Woods played the white supremacist murderer;

Alec Baldwin played the successful district attorney and

Whoopi Goldberg played Myrlie Evers, the Wife and subsequent Widow of Medgar Evers.

Medgar Evers' brother, Charles Evers was the first black man to be elected a mayor in Mississippi in modern times.

After his brother's death Charles became a close personal friend of

Robert F Kennedy. The men were bonded by the fact that both their brothers were murdered by an Assassin's bullet.

.@eji_org identified 4,084 lynchings in 12 Southern states between 1877 & 1950.

Where are the victims’ monuments?

"Abbeville chronicles the unveiling of a historical marker dedicated to the brutal death of Anthony Crawford a century ago. Lynched in the town square of Abbeville, South Carolina, Crawford was a successful African-American farmer who argued with a white merchant for a fair price for cottonseed. For his “crime,” he was publicly stabbed, shot and hanged by a white mob, and his family was subsequently run out of town.

Crawford’s murder counts as just one of the 4,084 racial terror lynchings identified by EJI in 12 Southern states between the end of Reconstruction in 1877 and 1950, and yet is one of only a handful of deaths recognized today by public markers.

In fact, the Abbeville memorial is one of six lynching markers erected by EJI as part of an effort to force Americans to face our history of racial terror and reshape the national narrative about race. The other five can be found in LaGrange, Georgia, and four cities in Alabama. EJI is working with communities to install more. But it’s still a far cry from the more than 1,500 symbols of the Confederacy in public spaces that the Southern Poverty Law Center has mapped:....

...There are very few monuments or memorials that address the history and legacy of lynching in particular or the struggle for racial equality more generally…. Only when we concretize the experience through discourse, memorials, monuments and other acts of reconciliation can we overcome the shadows cast by these grievous events.”

http://billmoyers.com/story/4000-black-people-lynched-south-monuments/

Rather than commemorate the heroes of white supremacy and traitorous insurrection against the United States of America, we should be remembering those human beings who lost their lives through the perpetuation of the confederacy's promotion of white supremacy.

Is there no sympathy for the lynched victims of white racism?

Is it more important to promote the traitors or to remember the victims?

“We have made my ancestor an idol of white supremacy, racism and hate,” he said. “As a pastor, it is my moral duty to speak out against racism, America’s original sin. Today, I call on all of us with privilege and power to answer God’s call to confront racism and white supremacy head on.”

4,084 lynchings of black Americans in the south from 1877 - 1950.

Where are the statues and monuments commemorating these victims of white supremacy?

Is it better to commemorate the violence of the Legacy and Heritage of the Confederacy?

Or should we be honoring those who have lost their lives to white supremacy?

Honoring them?  How?

With STATUES?

Well, in the first place, there wouldn't be enough ROOM for all the statues that'd require.  The NATIVE-AMERICANS alone would require twice the space of Texas.

Harriet Tubman survived through being beaten as a slave and the underground railroad and made it to the 20th century http://wapo.st/2vJhVzO

E551CE7F-9FD3-4534-88D7-02DFB98397E1_w65

Harriet Tubman not only physically led individual black people out of slavery - - she also intellectually influenced Abraham Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation in coordination with Frederick Douglass, which ultimately freed all black slaves.

She's not some kind of a joke or some kind of a parlor story - - she's a real Heroine of American history.

Until all Americans accept that people who are not white men can also be great Heroes and Heroines of American History, we're never going to have any peace in this country.

Everybody has made a contribution to build this country, not just one group.

It's rather sad that everybody knows that except the white supremacists.

She followed The North Star-- what a courageous human being.

Clearly there should be statues \ monuments,   E.g. collective ones in a city \ county that commemorate multiple victims.

The people in these areas talk about retaining their heritage;  well what their ancestors did and the people that paid the ultimate price is part of that heritage.

Some things are not really open to be joked about--

The Holocaust is 1 thing and the terrorist lynchings and cross burnings against black people by the Ku Klux Klan is another.

But this does remind me of something that summarized Gandhi's viewpoint--

" First they ignore you,

Then they laugh at you,

Then they fight you,

Then you win. "

I would say to the Rev. that it's possible to honor Gen. Lee as one of his ancestors  without also honoring that which he stood for.  But it depends on how it sits with his conscience.  For example----

Part of my ethnic heritage is Russian.  However, if it was discovered that I'm a distant descendant of JOSEPH STALIN, I would have NO qualms about the taking down and destruction of any statues of him.

It seems that @DanaRohrabacher may be Wikileaks’s favorite Congressman, too.

He also called Charlottesville a “total hoax.” @DanaRohrabacher was trying to pack all of his stupid into one day.

I dare Dana to go all the way to Charlottesville and deliver that message personally to Heather Heyer's mother and to all the other individuals, who were marching for freedom that fateful Saturday, when they were nearly murdered in that vicious white supremist attack.

I do not oppose their removal except under these lalse circumstances. the left will remove them but csannot cite one example of how their removal will impact concretely in anyone's life...

are we really to believe that the poor put-upon black citizenry of chicago are so vacuous of higher thought patterns that they are going to commence to throwing block parties to celebrate the exile from public sight of all confederate monuments while their sons are shooting each other nightly on the killing streets of chicago with no apparent cessation in sight????????????
