"Thousands of people have been protesting across Spain, after a court failed to convict five men on rape charges for an attack on a young woman during a bull-running festival.

Angry demonstrators packed central Madrid and other cities shouting "Shame! Shame!" and "No means no".

The five were jailed for nine years for sexual assault, but many saw the sentence as too lenient.

Both the woman and the defendants say they will appeal against the verdict.

The five - who belonged to a WhatsApp group called La manada (wolf pack) - filmed the attack, which took place during the San Fermin festival in Pamplona in July 2016....

The UN recognises water as a human right. The EU has yet to do the same.

" Resolution 64/292, the United Nations General Assembly explicitly recognized the human right to water and sanitation and acknowledged that clean drinking water and sanitation are essential to the realisation of all human rights. "

Brazil: Public Security Cameras En Route to Marielle Franco's Home Were Turned Off Before Assassination

The public security cameras belong to Rio de Janeiro's Security Department.

Five public security cameras en route to Marielle Franco's home were turned off 24 to 48 hours before her assassination. The cameras, which all belong to Rio de Janeiro's Security Department, were mounted on street posts and buildings with one of the cameras located at Estacio Metro Station a short distance away from where the Black activist and Councilwoman was murdered.

The Estacio Metro Station camera, according to Extra, records 360 degrees images and transmits those images to the Integrated Center of Command and Control if the cameras were operational they could have assisted in the ongoing investigations.

Three days before she was murdered on March 15, Marielle denounced the deaths of two youths during a military police operation in the Acari favela.

I doubt many people consider the present gov't of China and associate it

with human liberation. They seem more akin to the exploitative capitalists

of the mid to late 19th century.

Yeah, it's very obvious he's just saying it to win favor with the party and people. His speech doesn't even mention how they have private healthcare.

Sounds like he felt like he had to put out something just to pretend they still have

some connection with Marxism. Rather over the top too. They have as much of a

connection to Marxism as Andrew Mellon had.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-07/pence-is-said-to-call-on-venezuela-to-suspend-may-20-elections

Vice President Mike Pence plans to call Monday on Venezuela to suspend its presidential election later this month because of corruption concerns, two people familiar with the matter said.

The U.S. joins the European Union in calling on Venezuela to postpone the May 20 election until there are better assurances that it will be a free and fair democratic contest. President Nicolas Maduro is seeking a second six-year term, and opposition lawmakers have said security forces have physically threatened them and their supporters.

Pence will make the statement when he addresses more than two dozen ambassadors in a speech at the Organization of American States, according to the people who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The eruption of the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii has destroyed a total of 35 structures - mostly homes - and is threatening hundreds more.

Nearly 2,000 people have so far been evacuated. Some residents were allowed home to rescue pets, but authorities said it was not safe to stay.

New fissures and vents opened overnight in the Leilani Estates area, where lava leapt up to 230ft (70m) into the air.

The island was hit by a powerful 6.9 magnitude earthquake on Friday.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the port city of Dalian over the past two days, the second meeting between top officials of the allies in less than two months.

The summit came after Kim’s surprise two-day visit to Beijing in late March, his first known trip abroad since taking power in 2011. The most recent talks follow Kim’s meeting with President Moon Jae-in of South Korea on April 27 and an expected one with U.S. President Donald Trump, possibly next month.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China’s exports rebounded more strongly than expected in April after a surprise drop the previous month, suggesting global demand remains relatively resilient and providing a cushion to the economy amid a heated trade dispute with the United States.

Imports in April also grew more robustly than anticipated, signaling China’s domestic demand is holding up well, good news for policymakers looking to soften the blow from any trade shocks.

https://www.telesurtv.net/english/news/Japan-Victims-of-Forced-Sterilization-Demand-Compensation-20180509-0006.html

Some victims included people who suffered from leprosy or Hansen's disease, mental illness or had behavioral problems.

Multiple people who were forced to undergo sterilization are accusing the Japanese Government of human right abuses and violations.

The victims have either filed suits against or are demanding compensation from the Japanese Government for being included in the program. An official at the health ministry, who declined to address the suits, said: "It was an operation that was carried out according to a law that was in force at the time, so we are contesting it with the stance that it is not a matter for compensation.”

Seventy-five-year-old victim, Saburo Kita – who uses a pseudonym for anonymity – said: "There was no explanation, ever,” about a V-shaped scar on his lower body.

"I was left with a body that couldn't create children."

Kita only became aware of the program – which was mainly performed on individuals with physically or cognitively disabilities – in January.

"Right after the war, rebuilding the country and its people was paramount, so in the name of building better citizens for the nation, the law came into effect," Keiko Toshimitsu, a bioethics researcher, said.

"It was to build a better Japan – along, of course, with prejudice against the disabled. Then in the 1960s and 1970s, there was rapid economic growth so they needed people born who could keep the growth going."
