America's Gun Culture...

265 posts in this topic

How US gun culture compares with the world-

"

Americans own the most guns per person in the world, about four in 10 saying they either own a gun or live in a home with guns, according to a recent Pew Center study. Forty-eight percent of Americans said they grew up in a house with guns.
According to the survey, a majority (66%) of US gun owners own multiple firearms, with nearly three-quarters of gun owners saying they couldn't imagine not owning one......

The US has one of the highest rates of death by firearm in the developed world, according to World Health Organization data.
Our calculations based on OECD data from 2010 show that Americans are 51 times more likely to be killed by gunfire than people in the United Kingdom.
Most American gun owners (two-thirds) say a major reason they own a gun is for their personal protection, according to the Pew study. However, the majority of America's firearm-related deaths are attributed to self-harm.
Gun-related suicides are eight times higher in the US than in other high-income nations.....

But when it comes to gun massacres, the US is an anomaly.
There are more public mass shootings in America than in any other country in the world.......

Globally, restrictive gun laws have proven to make a difference in curbing massacres....

OP-ED:  America’s nostalgic gun culture defies logic and common sense-

"....The color of our skin makes up most of the Republican Party, a party twice as likely to own guns at home than the Democratic Party.

People who look like me are ultimately responsible that a third of all Americans with children under 18 at home have a gun in their household, including 34 percent of families with children younger than 12.

We make up 80 percent of Congress. The majority of white lawmakers refuse to make it legally harder to buy firearms, even AR-15 assault rifles that no respectable hunter would ever use to bag a 12-point buck...

Why can damn near anyone buy a killing machine in less than the seven minutes it takes to fill out paperwork and hand over a Visa card?

We are responsible for the backward logic that, “Guns don’t kill people; people kill people,” even though guns have statistically been proven to be the most efficient way to end human life.

...We say we buy them for just recreational hunting, for shooting competitions. We say they have always been in our family and they always will. We say this as if it is also good to smoke unfiltered Camel cigarettes, glug bourbon and consume large amounts of fried food like our fathers who died of lung cancer, cirrhosis of the liver and heart disease.

We make every excuse to hold on to our God-given right to bear arms to the extreme that we pathetically call it our “God-given right to bear arms.”...

“Why in the hell does the gun lobby tell everyone the gun-control people want to take away your guns?” he said. “That’s the same kind of bulls— fear tactics [Joseph] McCarthy used. ‘We’re all going to be Communists if we don’t stop these people.’ Cowards. Politicians....

They got so caught up in their own fear, they couldn’t even make it harder for mentally ill people to buy semi-automatic weapons.”

The idea that we need to take all of who are fathers and forefathers were with us — use the same language, eat the same food, have the same vices, believe a 224-year-old amendment was written for today — is the kind of irrational logic we use to feel good about our choices, our intransigent positions about things, big and small....

Explaining America’s Gun Culture to China (for example) -

"....The old American Wild West is the principal political myth co-opted by the American gun industry in the 19th century to convince American consumers that by buying their products they would not only increase their safety in a violent world, but that they as individuals would also help advance American civilization and freedom by personally protecting their inalienable rights rather than having to rely on the government.

It is a perfect case of product placement camouflaged as patriotic duty.

As Pamela Haag points out in her book The Gunning of America: Business and the Making of American Gun Culture, the American gun industry specifically sought to target domestic consumers after the gun had become a luxury rather than a necessary good in order to create demand for the merchandise.

The gun, Haag explains, “became a thing that served psychological needs more than pragmatic ones of war, ranching, the conquest of Native Americans, or the rural economy… What was once needed now had to be loved.”

In order to do so, the gun industry had to exploit the legends and purported violence of the American Wild West and repackage it as an integral part (rather than just an outlier) of American political culture.........

the American national character can only be properly assessed if one takes into account the American experience at the frontier, “a place where advancing civilization met declining savagery,” as Turner put it. In that sense, the Wild West, much more than the legacies of the American Revolution or U.S. Civil War, became an integral part of modern American Republican identity.........

Videos show suspect in WA school shooting playing with guns-

"ROCKFORD, Wash. (AP) — The student accused of shooting a classmate to death at a Washington state high school and wounding three others had posted videos online showing him playing with guns, including one where he pretends to hunt for a drug dealer...

Armed with a pistol and rifle, classmates say the shooter’s face “was passive” when he tried to fire a weapon. It jammed, and another boy confronted him.

“He went to his next weapon,” Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich said. “A student walked up to him, engaged him, and that student was shot. That student did not survive.”

A custodian stopped the shooter, a heroic act the sheriff said prevented more bloodshed. The wounded victims were expected to survive...

The irony here is that it's easier to buy a gun than it is to get a Visa card.

My brother, a Navy vet and NRA member said it was easier for him to buy guns than it was getting the VA to send him his monthly allotment.

Funny getting my MasterCard was a piece of cake.  They offered it to me stating I was already approved.

And then besides the above example and where some moronic parent thought it was somehow a "smart move" to teach the above little girl how to fire a fully automatic weapon, to say nothing of the now dead moronic instructor who would go along with the little girl's parent's stupidazz idea, you have the moronic Nancy Lanza, the now dead Connecticut woman who somehow thought teaching her emotionally troubled son Adam how to operate firearms was somehow a "good idea".

(...and THESE two examples of morons were and are just SOME of the examples of the gun-loving morons we have in this country)

Dargo, you know that was a tragic accident caused by complacency in gun safety by the instructor. NEVER under any circumstances stand along side a person discharging a firearm during training  Child was not accustom to the sudden recoil.

Several states have put age restrictions on teaching children with automatic weapons.

Yeah, OH yeah, I've heard THAT stupidazz explanation for that instructor's death alright, ham. MANY times in fact. Yeah, "Well, gosh, he just shouldn't have been beside the little tyke when she pulled the trigger on that fully auto weapon. Gosh, he should've been BEHIND her, THAT'S all!"

But THINK about it, ham!!! That little tyke should NEVER have had a fully auto weapon in her little hands in the FIRST DAMN PLACE. In FACT, she shouldn't have had ANY damn firearm in little hands at such a young age!!!

THIS is why I will NEVER call that "a tragic accident". Nope, 'cause it was just a MORONIC decision in the FIRST PLACE to put that weapon in her little hands to BEGIN with...PERIOD!!!

(...and the VERY reason I said that those two examples I cited earlier of moronic decision making were and are just TWO examples of some of the moronic gun-loving idiots and idiot PARENTS we have in this country!!!)

Sad.

Aaah, but I guess when that "bad ol' tyrannical government" comes knockin' on these little girls' front door, they'll be locked and loaded and ready to help their parents fend 'em off real good anyway, huh.

Guess it boils down to what state one lives in.

And that state would be called "PSYCHOTIC DENIAL"!

Or, "A state of complete mental collapse".

progressives doan like a big gun?...

:D

How wonderful it would be if we can generate that kind of energy.  Blasting that wall more likely consumed as much power the U.S. produces in a day.

Fusion...STILL WAITING! :(
