Texas family sues US government after mass shooting

A family that lost three generations at a Texas church mass shooting in November filed a lawsuit Friday against the US government, claiming it could have prevented the gunman from legally acquiring firearms.

Devin Patrick Kelley, who had a history of domestic abuse and mental health problems, killed 26 people and wounded 20 others at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

The victims included one-year-old Noah Holcombe and his aunt 36-year-old Crystal Holcombe, who was pregnant and died along with three of her five children. In all, the Holcombe family counted nine members who perished in the attack.

The lawsuit was filed by Joe and Claryce Holcombe, who are in their mid-80s and lost their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Is NRA’s power slipping? Gun control gains ground in Florida on anniversary of Orlando mass shooting

Is God against gun control? Unhinged Florida questionnaire suggests the NRA may be in a downward spiral

".........NRA, which sent out a questionnaire to 2018 candidates in Florida that had questions so aggressively worded that they went viral on Sunshine State social media and even got a comedy segment on "The Opposition w/ Jordan Klepper."

Two questions on the questionnaire strongly suggest that by supporting gun safety regulation, a candidate is opposed to God and religious freedom. One question notes that the "oath of office requires you to place a hand on the Bible and swear to support" the Constitution, which, the questionnaire clearly suggests, can only be supported correctly by adhering to the NRA's fundamentalist interpretation of the Second Amendment.

When the questionnaire asks whether a candidate will oppose a ban on guns in churches, the only two available answers are, "Yes. Churches have a right to make security decisions on their private property," and "No. Despite private property rights and constitutional rights, I believe the State should regulate churches."

Much of the questionnaire is focused on obtaining a promise to repeal the gun regulations signed into law by Scott in March, again with questions worded in such a way that the "correct" answer in the NRA's eyes is unmistakable.

...While the main purpose of this mailer appears to be to intimidate Republican politicians who have signed onto even modest gun reforms, Democratic candidates quickly repurposed it for themselves — to show how eager they are to tell the NRA off. State legislature candidate Anna Eskamani kicked off the trend by posting photos of the questionnaire on Twitter and writing, "Hard pass, and heading to the recycle bin."

Gubernatorial candidate Gwen Graham soon followed with a video of herself writing, "NO NRA MONEY" on the questionnaire. One of her primary opponents for the Democratic nomination, Philip Levine, posted a video of himself writing NRA-unfriendly answers on a whiteboard. Another state house nominee, Tracy Pratt, also posted a photo of the questionnaire and tweeted, "I will proudly NOT be seeking their support or endorsement! #neveragain."...........

the tide may be starting to turn in Florida against the NRA. Democrats are campaigning hard against lax gun laws, Republicans are getting wobbly in some cases and there's a level of passion among gun-control advocates that previously only existed on the pro-gun side. Under the circumstances, this NRA questionnaire seems like a panic reaction, an effort to double down from a group whose previously unquestioned power is starting to crumble.

FBI agent Chase Bishop charged after backflip shooting

An off-duty FBI agent who accidentally shot a man while dancing in a Denver nightclub has been charged with second-degree assault.

The agent, named by police as Chase Bishop, was performing a backflip in a nightclub when his gun fell out of his pocket and shot a bystander in the leg.

Mr Bishop handed himself in to police on Tuesday and has been charged with second-degree assault.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday for a hearing.

"Additional charges may be filed based on the results of a pending blood alcohol content analysis," the Denver District Attorney's office said in a statement on Tuesday.

An FBI spokeswoman would not comment on the incident "in order to preserve the integrity of the investigation," the Associated Press news agency reported.

Gunfire at NJ Festival Leaves 22 Hurt, Suspect Dead

......Officials said there were several fights sparked by disputes between neighborhood gangs that broke out prior to the shooting. They also said officers warned that the event needed to be shut down before the shooting took place.

"Prior to the shooting the Trenton Police Department began dispersing individuals," Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo Onofri said. "Those individuals however continued to loiter and additional fights broke out and then the shooting occurred.".......

"This is yet another reminder of the senselessness of gun violence," he said. "For those responsible, we will bring the full extent of the law and justice to bear on them." .......

So happens I first saw the sign on the Weather Channels "Firestorm" last night that discussed the wives of firefighters fighting them.  Husbands stay away on the job, hundreds of miles away for months.  Guess the woman with 2 kids shouldn't protect herself.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Multiple people were shot Thursday at a newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland, with a witness saying a single gunman fired into the newsroom.

A reporter at The Capital tweeted that a single individual shot multiple people. Phil Davis, who covers business and politics for the newspaper, tweeted that the gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees.

He added, “There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you’re under your desk and then hear the gunman reload.”

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said it was responding to reports of the shooting.

You’re wrong, Mitch McConnell. The federal govt can do a lot to prevent gun violence. As @SenateMajLdr you’re uniquely poised to make a difference.

It’s a shame you keep ignoring that fact

—maybe it has to do with accepting $135,450 from the gun lobby?

Interesting article.  However, there is a much larger movement in S.C. to pass what are called constitutional carry laws.  Basically means that anyone can carry a firearm, concealed or unconcealed.  Some legislators are even advocating no restrictions at all.

As for passing the ordinance under the assumption that the courts would not rule it invalid before the event (as happened), if the NRA or others so chose they could get an immediate injunction against the city as to enforcement of the ordinances.

One little know fact is that cities are counties are subdivisions of the state government.  The legislatures can abolish them if they so desire.  Let alone controlling what kind of legislation they pass.
