Melo (1986) Alain Resnais, France.  Andre Dussolier begins an affair with his best friend's (Pierre Arditti) wife (Sabine Azema) and sure enough complications ensue - but with a few twists.  Azema and Arditti won Cesar awards.  Fanny Ardant also stars.  Quite good IMO.

I Hate Actors (1986) Gerard Krawrzyk, France.  This is my kind of film - a funny buried treasure.  It is based on a novel by Ben Hecht about the trials and tribulations of a talent agent who represents a lot of has-beens.  Portly, aging Michel Galabru is fantastic as the over-stuffed former swashbuckler.  It also has a good old murder mystery.

Pouvoir Intime (1986) is a stylish armored car heist film that put Canadian director Yves Simoneau on the map.  It stars Marie Tifo and Pierre Curzi (above).  Not bad.

220px-Armour-of-god-poster.jpg

Armour of God was Jackie Chan's stab at an Indiana Jones-type movie. He plays a musician/treasure hunter who gets duped by an evil cult into acquiring a precious relic for them. He realizes the error of his ways, but then the cult kidnaps his girlfriend in order to force him into finding the remaining pieces of the "Armour of God", which they believe will grant them great power.

019fadf039313123eacfa5afa4c776fe.jpg

Chan filmed this one in Asia and Eastern Europe. Known for doing his own stunts (and including the painful outttakes at the end of his films, a gimmick he picked up after appearing in Cannonball Run), this film is renowned for being the closest brush with death Chan had yet experienced, as a minor stunt involving him jumping into a tree resulted in a long fall and a fractured skull. Like most of Chan's films, this had a shoddy release in the West. It wasn't seen theatrically in America at all during it's original run. A 1991 sequel, Armour of God II: Operation Condor, was released (heavily edited) by Miramax in 1997. That proved to be a modest hit, so Miramax then released the first film, calling it a "prequel", in 1999, re-titled Operation Condor 2: The Armor of the Gods.

Othellozeffirelli_1.jpg?w=640

Perhaps it is no match for a live performance but Franco Zeffirelli's Otello (1986) with Placido Domingo was pretty good and I usually don't rush out to see opera.  Domingo was on Amanpour recently and he is still going strong, now as a baritone.

It would be interesting to throw this Shakespeare/Verdi role into the blackface debate.  Is it PC for an actor to use blackface if it is not meant to be derogatory?  All we hear is it is never okay in today's world.

The 1001 Movies book also had that listed as a 1987 movie, so don't feel bad.
