Stijn Coninx (not Stijm!) is probably the most important Belgian film director apart from the brothers Dardenne. He broke through with some popular comedies, but in 1992 he directed a serious historical drama: Daens. It's loosely based on the book Pieter Daens by Louis Paul Boon, although Jan Decleir plays Pieter's brother Adolf. It's the true story of a priest who became an activist for laborer's rights. This led to a conflict with the leaders of the conservative Catholic party, of which he was a member. True events are combined with fictional storylines.
