Caligula's Slaves/ 0rgies of Caligula - Another knock off of the 79 Caligula film with political intrigue, sword fights and a lot of nudity. In the court of Caligula, conspirators plan to overthrow him by hiring one of his lovers to kill him. Of course, he finds out and a power struggle ensues between them. Not as good as the original film but this is a pretty fun sword and sandal flick and a good way to kill a couple hours.

Le Crime d’Ovide Plouffe (1984) by Denys Arcand is a direct sequel to Les Plouffe (1981).  Gabriel Arcand reprises his role as Ovide who is falsely accused of killing his wife.  It's a much more serious film but still worth catching for its characterizations and depiction of period Quebec.

Volker Schlondorff's Swann In Love is based on Proust's In Search of Lost Time.  Jeremy Irons as Swann (performing in French) is hopelessly in love with a woman who is not faithful to him.  The real treat in this film is Alain Delon.

I had no idea that Bertrand Tavernier's A Sunday In the Country (1984) was the recipient of so many awards until starting this thread.  And Sabine Azema won a few acting awards for it too.  It explores family dynamics and reflects upon the life of the painter patriarch over the course of a traditional afternoon get-together.  No guns in this one!

Sabine Azema returns in Alain Resnais' L'amour a Mort (1984).  Azema's husband dies at the start of the film but then amazingly comes back to life.  Serious questions about everything follow.  It's life as an existential crisis.

I should probably give Ingmar Bergman's After the Rehearsal (1984) another shot at some point.  It has a good cast in Erland Josephson, Ingid Thulin and Lena Olin.  But it is a dry look at a theatre director and his young actress.  It hovered just above my "I've also seen" section.

Ake and His World (1984) Allan Edwall, Sweden.   This is a charming film about a boy growing up in rural Sweden.  I saw it on a cable movie channel in 1990 and have been looking for a copy now without success.

Mario (1984) Jean Beaudin, Canada.  This NFB film is about two brothers who live on the Magdelen Islands.  They are quite close until the elder boy discovers girls.  It won three Genie awards though I must admit that I was not that taken by it.
