The Chess Players, Satyajit Ray's first film largely in Hindi (his previous films were in his native Bengali) is my favorite foreign film of 1977. Richard Attenborough is in the film -- there is some English in the movie as well.

Regarding Bunuel's That Obscure Object of Desire, which was a great hit in foreign language circles in New York Ciry when it was released, I actually prefer The Devil Is a Woman, the Von Sternberg/Dietrich treatment of the same story (Pierre Louys The Woman and the Puppet). There are three other films based on the novel as well.

The Yellow Handkerchief (1977) swept the Japanese Film Awards and probably broke its box office as well.  It is a real crowd pleaser by director Yoji Yamada better known for the Tora-San series of which he directed most of the 48 films.   Ken Takatura plays a convict on his way home after release from prison.  He tags up with a young couple who provide most of the comic relief.  Takatura wonders if his wife will still be waiting for him.  A yellow handkerchief tied outside the front door will be a signal if he is.  I'm not giving anything away that isn't revealed in the film posters themselves.  The film was remade in 2008 with William Hurt and based on the same source material by NYC journalist, Pete Hamill.  Perhaps Hamill's stories were also the basis for the famous Tony Orlando and Dawn song?
