Carlos Diegues' Bye Bye Brazil was my favourite film of 1979.  Jose Wilker and Betty Faria star in a cheesy carnival show that travels from rural village to village in a van.  Their livelihood comes under threat when they discover more and more villages watching television on a communal set.  Very good.

Costa-Gavras' Clair de Femme (1979) is a beautiful film about two married people, both dealing with grief who come together.  Yves Montand and Romy Schneider star.  Recommended.

courage-fuyons-en-tete-810x600.jpg

Jean Rochefort and Catherine Deneuve star in Yves Robert's comedy Courage Fuyons (1979).  Fuyons (Rochefort) comes from along line of cowards and is a mousy family man.  When he meets and falls head-over-heels for Deneuve he throws caution to the wind and pursues her.
