The Handyman (1980) marked the feature film directorial debut for Quebecoise actress, Micheline Lanctot.  Lanctot played Richard Dreyfuss' girlfriend in The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1974).  The Handyman is a simple comedy about the title character's dalliance with a married woman.

Robert Enrico's Heads or Tails (1980) has the benefit of starring two of France's greatest actors, Philippe Noiret and Michel Serrault.  It's an entertaining cat and mouse between detective Noiret and suspected wife killer, Serrault.

What do you do when you've just had a huge international hit with La Cage Aux Folles (1978)?  You follow it with La Cage Aux Folles II and ruin it with silliness by having Serrault and Tognazzi getting mixed up with spies.  Needless to say it pales in comparison with the original but the stars were still good.

They Were Actors - The plot of the film is based on real events of the Great Patriotic War. The story is based on the life of the real actress Aleksandra Feregonna (played by Zinaida Kirienko).
"They didn't have to break into the cities,
Forcing river rifts.
When the general trouble came,
The actors died as soldiers ... ”
When the fascists occupied the Crimea, the actors of the Simferopol Drama Theater (headed by Feregonna) entered the Falcon underground group. The activities of the underground workers were diverse: they pasted leaflets with the information of the Soviet Information Bureau, made maps indicating the strategic objects of the enemy, supplied the partisans with medicines, etc.
But not all people fought against the Germans in the occupied territory equally dignified. Many did come into confrontation with the enemy, but there were also those who went into the service of the invaders and became a traitor. Among them are Kablukova, Solodchy, and Fricke.
On April 10, 1944, 3 days before the liberation of Simferopol, the underground workers died from the bullets of their enemies - they were shot on the outskirts of the city. And on April 14 they were buried with military honors.
After many years, the deserving punishment overtook the traitors - they were tried by a military tribunal. This film includes a beautiful rendition of "Lili Marleen" performed by Zinaida Kirienko to the Germans that is used to contrast with her underground activities. My favorite scene.

The Beyond finds Italian director Lucio Fulci at his peak. Following 1979's Zombi and 1980's City of the Living Dead aka Gates of Hell, he helmed this surreal nightmare of a movie that, while weak in plot, more than makes up for it in atmosphere and inspired visuals. A couple (David Warbeck and Catriona MacColl) inherit a rundown hotel in Louisiana that may contain an entrance to Hell. While primarily shot in Italy, there was some location footage shot near New Orleans, including an incredible bit featuring a deserted Lake Ponchartrain Causeway. If you've ever traveled through this area, you'd know how difficult it had to be to get these shots with a limited budget and before CGI. While Fulci made a few more decent horror films (1981's The House By the Cemetery, 1982's The New York Ripper), he would never again achieve the demented heights he does in The Beyond.
