Vittorio Gassman plays the aged patriarch of 'The Family' in Ettore Scola's drama.  He also plays his own grandfather in flashback as he reflects on the passing of a generation.  It is worth catching for its cast alone: Gassman, Fanny Ardant, Philippe Noiret and Stefania Sandrelli.

The Grand Highway (1987) Jean-Loup Hubert, France.  This is another film which has a kid dumped in the country for the summer which turns out to be a coming of age.  This one is well done and was supposedly remade as Paradise in 1991 with Don Johnson though I don't recall that being about kids.

The Felons - This film is from Yugoslavia. The framing story is of the man talking to two criminals. He describes how he joined a dissident group during the Nazi occupation and was imprisoned. The film chronicles the arrest and terrible torture he is put through in prison. This is a decent dramatic film but nothing special.

Un Zoo la Nuit (1987) Jean-Claude Lauzon, Canada.  After being released from prison a young man's attempts to re-integrate into society are hampered by police harassment.  Night Zoo won an astonishing 13 Canadian Genie Awards.  I was underwhelmed and didn't vote for it.  It may be worth a second look years later.

Wedding In Galilee (1987) Michel Khlefi, Palestine.  Location, location, location.  That's what make this 'simple' wedding film interesting.  The mayor of an Arabic village occupied by the Israeli's must seek co-operation to lift the curfew for his son's wedding.

A Broad Bellflower - This one is pure romance and has almost no propaganda at all in it. An elderly man returns to his hometown with his son and reflects on the love he left behind. He wanted to marry the woman but her jealous sister who feared being left alone (now the head chairwoman/ mayor of the town) ruined things for them. This one has Bollywood style musical interludes sprinkled throughout it. A bit stale but still decent. The lack of propaganda in this one makes it more enjoyable than most films from this country. I also liked the shots of the countryside. This film was also screened at the Melbourne International Film Festival in Australia.
